Banksia problem - please see the pics

I have a Banksia - Birthday Candles in my garden. It has been in for three months. For the first six weeks, it didn't do much but now it has been growing really well - heaps of new growth on it.

Just in the last few days, I have noticed some of the new growth has turned brown - please see my pics.

What could be causing this? I don't want to lose it.

Please help.

There are three possible causes:
1. salt damage caused by water being too salty which could be at this time of the year depending on its source, or fertilizers
2. poor drainage
3. fertilizer containing too much phosphorus.

A possible solution is to deep water, flushing the salts from the root zone, allowing the soil to dry a little before the next watering. Deep watering less often is preferable to frequent light waterings. Hold off the fertilizing until autumn, only use one that is suitable for native plants with minimum phosphorus. If the drainage is an issue plan to dig the plant up and replant in a raised mound. Pick a cooler run of weather to do this.

I have the same Banksia in Brisbane. Mine has only been in for 3 months and I have noticed a few brown branches but not enough to worry about.

1. Never fertilise! Ever
2. Mulch
3. It should be on its way to having its roots down and establishing itself and won't need watering unless we get drought. If you do water it make sure it is a deep water.

I have clay soil and have mounded mine as well

Hi Jessica, I like your trellis, but sorry I don't have a diagnosis. It sounds that the plant was producing delicious cucumbers for a while, right? I, too, was very frustrated with mine because they always produced well but never long enough. Through help from this forum I adapted some changes this year and so far I've been getting great cucumbers everyday since mid May. To extend the harvest I made the following changes: 1. Never use up all garden space at the first spring planting. I reserved some space for successive planting. 2. Pick cucumbers when they are young and pick daily so the plant doesn't "age" as fast. Aged plants are more vulnerable to diseases. 3. Repeat planting about every 4 weeks. My second planting is at it's peak right now, and the third planting is almost ready to fruit. I've found that 3 plants at each planting is more than enough to supply for a small family. We're blessed with a long season in southern California; maybe that's why the above changes worked well. I hope you'll continue to get delicious cucumbers.

I am coming late to the party, LOL, but I think you need to create the sense of an entryway at the door, rather than having it in the middle of all the seating. I would pull the rug over in front of the daybed, running longways parallel to it, and the coffee table running the same way. Bring the black bench forward so that the traffic walks behind it to the entry door, rather than in front of it. Bring the torchiere out of the tv nook and put it in the corner to the right of that. Take the little table and lamp that are there and put at the corner where the two seating pieces meet. Angle the chair just a bit more toward the window with the ottoman in front of it. Move the sofa table to the spot under the window where the small table is now, and move the small table to the wall where the black bench was. Gather all your little pieces of art and group them over the daybed. The one piece looks lost there, but you have the two little pieces by the window that also seem lost - all together, they will have a more dynamic effect. Love the idea of bookshelves in the nook over the tv. For now, I would hang the six tiles that are by the door over the tv in two rows of three. Hang the artwork that is leaning on the mantel. It is too small to lean, will have more presence if it is lifted off the mantel. Take the small vase that is down on the hearth and put that on the right side of the mantel, and move the container that is there over in front of the pillar candle. Down the road, you certainly could use more artwork in the room, and another small chair angled in the corner to the left of the fireplace, or a tall tree as was added by squirrel above, with an uplight to bring more light to that part of the space. I think you could use bigger end tables, perhaps something round between the two seating pieces for interest.

In response to the most recent posts (not trying to respond to the original from 3 years ago) - Winds Breath is more yellow in hue than green (in terms of the actual color) so if it looks green it is possibly reflecting green from some source (like if there's a lot of greenery outside the window) or it has to do with lighting. White Sand definitely has yellow in it - not "undertones" per se but the hue family is yellow. Every neutral belongs to a hue family so perhaps you need to find a cool white or gray? The conundrum I think for you is that if you want a soft, off-white those are yellow in hue. Sherwin Williams Icicle is a cool very light gray if you're trying to get away from yellow and green. Below is a link is to a great resource. Unfortunately, a year or so ago when I was using the information to choose paint colors there was more free info available that now requires a subscription. A good number of paint colors are analyzed though. If you have the patience you can get away from all the subjective information you see online about undertones with this system - it takes the guesswork out of the equation. Land of Color

I have some Banksia ashybii in large pots and I notice that the tips of new leaves browning off before they unfurl fully and hardened. It always seems to happen over summer when I neglect to water them occasionally. I reckon it is just drought stress.

As long as I remember to water them occasionally it does not seem to have any long term effects as new leaves soon replace them as more buds errupt.

If it's only a couple of branches, I wouldn't worry about it. So long as the rest of the plant look green and healthy, this browning off will only cause the plant to branch more, which will ultimately improve the look of the plant.

I HAVE A Banksia Menzii that is 10 years old at least.

Looks heathybut the whole trunk is covered with a brown spongy covering.

Could it be Phytophera?
