I am sure you will get better advice that I can give-but my first thoughts are to turn the rug running the other way, then put a torchier (up-light in the corner near the tv-on a dimmer -it looks like you do not have any soft light near the tv-(this is what we did and like the softness for viewing) and then put a larger table near the door with a larger 3 way lamp. Then I would try a large picture where you have the 6. I even think the great pic. you have on the mantel would look nice next to the interesting couch with the reds. You might try the 6 squares-or 4 of them - above the fireplace. Some other ideas--shelves above the tv - stretching from side to side in the alcove or some art work there. You have some fun and nice things to work with!

Pretty room. I'm wondering from which room the door in question is coming from. Is it a high-traffic area? Some lighting options might include wall sconces or recessed lighting if you don't want a floor lamp taking up floor space. The end table you have nearest the door doesn't appear large enough to hold a lamp of adequate size. If you wanted a larger end table, there probably wouldn't be room along the length of that wall, unless you only have one end table. Others will likely be along soon to offer more advice.

What an interesting room, very Asian, and I like the reds -- my favorite color. I agree about turning the rug around, and that you could use a larger table by the couch near the door, or a different floor lamp, one that you like. There are plenty to choose from. Also maybe a floor lamp in the corner by the fireplace. It seems that you need more lamps in there.

The six pictures to the right of the door look good to me because I like the way they suggest a window or shadows of a window. But I would move the thing by the settee someplace else entirely, is it a clock? so that it doesn't overlap the picture. And you could move the small picture over the couch to a smaller area, and hang it lower. Maybe on the wall to the right of the tv, sort of spatially coordinated with the tv and the lamp.

noodlesportland - I just put the picture up on the mantle. We used to have the 6 copper squares thing on the mantle for a couple of years and I really liked it. I just thought I wanted to change it a bit. Shelves above the TV is a great idea!

Jan, the door leads to the garage and thats the entrance we use all the time! Yes, the table by the door is somewhat small. I think I will move the small table by the two seater bench and get a larger table for that spot by the door.

another idea-paint the wall that the door opens onto-the one with the red coach- a deep red or cocoa and do not put anything on the wall at all.

Have you considered a hanging lamp? You haven't got much going on to bring the eye up, so that's an idea.

You could just put the clock somewhere else in the room.

We have art hanging almost everywhere there is a space, just because we have so much, but not everyone would agree with that. I never worry about art making the room too busy. Painting the one wall a dark color is a good idea and you could still put art up there. Just do what looks good to you! I think the main thing is to make sure the art fits the space, as the large picture on the mantel does, and not hang it too high.

It's good that you have an Asian room in your house!

My thoughts :) Very general, not specific as to size, shape, or color of side tables, lamps, etc. Not sure about the rug position ... it seems to have ended up in front of the sofa in my virtual and maybe that would look odd, away from the center of the room or fp. Maybe in the wing chair grouping with the fp? Or maybe it's just a bit small?

The coffee table seems in the middle of the room, so I'd pull that in towards the sofa. You could get a larger sofa type table for under the window to service that chair and be more substantial. I'd also do some substantial lamps and end tables and make more of the sofa area. The fp side of the room looks so warm and cozy, yet the sofa side a bit spare. Might or might not paint the trim around the ?powder room? door but would paint the door in the wall color. I'd double up the drape panels for fullness, too, and have an expanse of window.

Some shelving might finish off the tv area nicely, although we can't see the full expanse of wall as to whether the fp would need something tweaked to balance it better with something like that (eg, maybe a couple of wrought iron sconces flanking the mantel painting).

As long as this is in here :) tried a bit more color and a golden one on the walls in the second wing chair pic. Could be a warm beige, too.

squirrelheaven-great pics! I agree about doubling the curtain panels and also, if can afford, put wood mini blinds on that window in a nice medium stain -like the mantel. Love the shelves. I still would like to see and interesting floor lamp by the tv - it would balance with the shelves and fill up that corner and give some light.

I really really like the shelves over the TV...unfortunatly, I have to wait until summer to have anything installed because I cannot get any of DH's time until summer for projects. Yes, the sofa side is a little empty. Its very helpful too see your pics. I do like the idea of painting the room. However, this space flows into the dining area and the kitchen all in one line and I am just not able to commit to a color that will work for the entire space! :(

There is a sofa table with a lamp behind the wing chair.

I moved the rug around last night to be horizontal... it connects the wing chair area and the sofa better but it makes the room look somewhat horizontal!?
Let me know what you guys think.

I'd try using the rug to either anchor the sofa conversation area or the fp and wing chair. Since the fp is focal, it might work best there and would seem centered to the room. The coffee table seems to be in the middle of the room. I'd pull that in towards the sofa. 18"-24" is typical. It doesn't seem to service either sitting area where it is.

For the wing chair, I'd get a nice big narrow table for under the window. That's another focal area, so you could put a good sized lamp, maybe a plant, some books, etc. there, as well as have a place to set a drink and snack while watching tv.

Crown moulding would be very nice too! :)

put the lamp on the other side of the tv. You can paint an accent wall-the one behind the red couch and then you can see if any other wall would look good in that accent color -I am wondering about that piller I see in the background-- anyway, paint is cheap and not permanent so--?

I woke up this morning wondering (do we ever stop decoarating around here!) if you could have the main rug in the room which would ground the fp and wing chair and then another smaller one for the coffee table and sofa grouping. Hard to tell from the pics. I was even wondering if you could somehow angle it across the room, hey, with another angled and layered on top (have you seen that?) so it's more of a large rug in the center of the room.

I'm wondering if you have the space to pull the furniture in some to create sort of a hallway from the garage door behind the furniture. Turn the rug and move the "bench" that is against the stair wall in to line up with the edge of the door that the knob is on. It would make the room seem smaller and cozier, but also separate from the garage entrance straight into the room. Though I don't know the dimensions of anything in your room. I'd make sure you have at least 3ft to walk around furniture on all sides.

With it pulled in then maybe add an end table with a lamp on that table.

I am coming late to the party, LOL, but I think you need to create the sense of an entryway at the door, rather than having it in the middle of all the seating.

I would pull the rug over in front of the daybed, running longways parallel to it, and the coffee table running the same way. Bring the black bench forward so that the traffic walks behind it to the entry door, rather than in front of it.

Bring the torchiere out of the tv nook and put it in the corner to the right of that. Take the little table and lamp that are there and put at the corner where the two seating pieces meet.

Angle the chair just a bit more toward the window with the ottoman in front of it.

Move the sofa table to the spot under the window where the small table is now, and move the small table to the wall where the black bench was.

Gather all your little pieces of art and group them over the daybed. The one piece looks lost there, but you have the two little pieces by the window that also seem lost - all together, they will have a more dynamic effect.

Love the idea of bookshelves in the nook over the tv. For now, I would hang the six tiles that are by the door over the tv in two rows of three.

Hang the artwork that is leaning on the mantel. It is too small to lean, will have more presence if it is lifted off the mantel. Take the small vase that is down on the hearth and put that on the right side of the mantel, and move the container that is there over in front of the pillar candle.

Down the road, you certainly could use more artwork in the room, and another small chair angled in the corner to the left of the fireplace, or a tall tree as was added by squirrel above, with an uplight to bring more light to that part of the space. I think you could use bigger end tables, perhaps something round between the two seating pieces for interest.

OOoh... lots of more ideas. I rearranged a little bit sunday night and I put the tiles above the sofa but I hadnt read your posts. I will have to try putting them above the TV to see how it looks.

Squirrelheaven, you are right. A sofa table by the wing chair looks much much better. The rug is a little small for the size of the room. I think I could do layering if I can find something that works with this rug. This one was a gift from my parents a couple of years ago so I want to keep it and this is about the only room in the house that has a traditional look. About crown moulding, at one time, we had grand ideas about doing it ourselves but at this time, time and budget constraints have put a damper on those ambitious plans.

Les - I like the lighting the way you suggested. Yeah, the painting is waiting to be hung up eventually. The settee is basically a hack.. its a simple bench with a headboard cut to fit behind it. :) So, the settee wont stand up on its own away from the wall! LOL. I will have to come up with some way of doing this with the back still looking good before I can try out your idea - I do like it though. I think it would look better.

Without the settee, the rug + coffee table near the sofa seem to be floating. It didnt look that great for some reason. Need to look for a rug that will work with this to make it look bigger.

I have made some changes and moves that I can do at this time but it gives me great ideas. Thanks again! Here are some pics with the re-arrangement for now. Do the tables by the sofa look out of balance to the sofa to you all?

Pesky, I wish I could have hanging lighting; I am not quite sure of how to hide wires if I do hanging lighting. I would love to have hanging lamps esp in the bedroom.

Those are some nice changes! Glad to see you already have a sofa table for the window -- it looks great and so much better :) I'd lower the pics over the sofa a bit if you decide to keep them there, they seem to be floating a bit.

I like the larger lamp and table by the door. Pull the table away from the sofa a bit more for some breathing room, though :)

The torchiere looks too small and lightweight there, I think. Maybe tuck it around the settee area?

I guess you don't want to move the coffee table or double-up the drapes. Maybe the white of the windows doesn't look right. I think I'd try another layer of fabric behind them for more body. (I'll leave my crazy ideas out about how you might do that. Maybe someone else knows how that could be done :)

I think a longer sofa would create the aisle effect from the garage, rather than a settee. Once in the room, it just feels like a powder room door to me :)

DH didnt like the curtains moved to the side... too traditional looking according to him but he also had a point of it being too open looking. So we left it in its 'non-traditional' setup.

To move the coffee table to the side with the sofa, the rug needs to be moved also and I thought that might leave the chair looking lonely. I will have to try that again next weekend and see if that looks better. The sofa side of the room is still a little lighter in visual weight than the chair side; I really like how the chair side looks now.

The torchiere is just what I had around the house. I want one of those floor lamps with wood turned or spindle like bases. :) The torchiere originally used to live by the settee and looked really out of place there.

I like the settee... I actually like all the big furniture pieces in that room - they were mostly built by DH and I or bought used and redone by us; So I would like to keep them. :) But I liked your idea of painting the door to match the wall; maybe that will make the door disappear.

good changes! I think a large floor plant in front of the floor lamp-even if you get a new one you will need to fill in the space a bit. Think about buying 4 more panels for the curtains-I could see solid panels to go with the 4 you have-I think folks are just saying that there is not enough fabric to each of your panels to give it the volume it needs. Oh looking again, how about just two more solid panels (contrasting color?) for the outside panels--? just a thought. It looks like wood shades -can we see them down ??

Oh, I didn't mean to replace your sofa or settee! I like them too and they have a lot of unique personality for your room. Just meant that the reason it might not look right is that a longer piece used does that well (for the aisle effect).

Suggesting the panels so they hang and hold their shape better, and look a little fuller :)
