I think you would have better luck getting responses if you post the pics in your post. I tried looking at the first two pics--and not sure if my computer is just running slow--but it took forever for them to open. Then, since you can't click to the next pic, it's hard to visualize the entire floor plan.

Your post has me a tad confused. You say you have shades in mind but for what? Can you please expand on what you're thinking you'd like to do, then people can make suggestions from there.

OG, what a wonderful space! I can see your dilemma though with where to paint what shade blue or green. I thought I had it figured out only to move to the other side of the room and think, nope that won't work. If the colors are light enough I think I might just paint the ceiling the same as the walls or possibly a shade or two lighter. We have a few color experts on this board, so let's hope one of them see this and chime in.

I want to use a blue colour for my kitchen and den area. You can see the den area from pictures 5 and 6. The living and dining area are in pictures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 and I want to paint those "rooms" green. What I was saying is I know what colours I want to use and am pretty sure of what shades, but I can't figure out where to start one colour and stop it. As you can see in picture six, one of the walls from the den area sort of wraps around to the dining area with a little alcove in between them. So, I'm not sure where I should stop my blue colour as it wraps around because of how that one wall is. So in picture 6 you see the den area and to the right a bit of the kitchen. I had originally wanted to do the kitchen walls in red, but because those walls also flow into the den area without a wall break to separate the rooms, I decided to just keep it all blue in the kitchen/den area. Colours are not the issue. Where to put them juxtaposed to each other, so as to keep the nice flow the house, is the issue. I hope that helped clear up what I was asking :)

Thank you for the compliment. Yea I want to do something cool to the ceiling in the living/dining area. As you can see in photo one there's some really nice architecture and I'm trying to find a way to accentuate that. I was thinking of maybe doing the little alcove (photos 5-7) and the triangular area of the ceiling in photo one (the part with the fan attached to it) in maybe the same colour, but then thought otherwise. As far as where the blue and green should meet, I had one I idea of having them meet along the seam in the curve in the wall, as seen in photo seven, almost a line done the middle of the alcove. Again, not sure how that would turn out hehe. I have a bunch of crazy ideas floating in my head but as far as them being a reasonable reality I'm not so sure.

Thoughts and comments much appreciated. I love the input and hope to see this room make a stunning transition. I need all the help I can get to make sure this room doesn't look like a circus gone wrong.

It looks like you could paint the foyer, through the staircase wall one color. You could always accentuate the walls with artwork, wall hangings, etc.. Really depends on the theme you are going for.

You are wise to proceed cautiously and think this thru very carefully. Open floor plans, especially with many variations in the ceiling heights and slants, usually look best IMO with the same color throughout, as well as on the ceiling. Since your den and kitchen seem to be separate from the entry, living, and dining rooms they could be a different color.

I have a semi-open plan with vaulted LR ceiling and I wish I had painted the ceiling the same color as the walls. There would be better continuity and I plan to do so when it's repainted. In my den and master bedroom which also have vaulted ceilings the ceilings are the same color as the walls and it really makes a positive difference. I've used mid-tone colors and it looks great.

I'm not a fan of accent walls and IMO there are few that look good. Seldom does one see them done by the really top professional decorators. It's too easy to do it badly IMO and have a disjointed look.

Yea. I have artwork that I'm going to hang. i just don't like having white/cream coloured walls. I have thought about the foyer idea. The ceiling is weird by the top of the stairs because it kind melds into the upstairs ceiling. I don't know if that is common with other floor plans, but I wasn't sure how to paint the ceiling in that one particular area without it looking unfinished or cut off. I'll link another picture to show what I mean about the ceiling.

The room flow from the kitchen to the den is going to be blue. I guess really the only wall I am struggling with what to do, is the wall featured in photos 4-7. And then after figuring out that wall it would be figuring out how I want to accentuate the ceiling in the living/dining area.

I've linked three more photos, one looking from the den area towards the living/dining area to shoe how that one wall wraps around, one of the wall from the den area up to the ceiling in the living/dinging area (which I'm not sure how to paint), and another showing how the ceiling from the living/dining area sort of curves into the ceiling of the upstairs (near the foyer), which also makes me question where the paint I put on the ceiling should stop if I decided to go down that path or if I'm going to be stuck painting the ceiling upstairs the same colour. I hope that all makes sense. I'm new to this. If anyone has pictures of an interior, that has some of the similar architecture designs, like mine does, that's been painted I'd love to see them.

Oprahghoust, your clarification is very helpful. I love your space, as difficult as they are to work with, the variations in the walls give it some character. Once painted I think they'll help add interest to the room.

I have to agree that going with one shade may be the way to go. I know you said you have your colors chosen, but I can't help but feel that if you went with a more neutral color for your walls, something with a touch of yellow in it, it would be a nice back drop to the blues and greens you really want. You can add your wanted colors to each space through furniture, accents and the drapes. Three colors that are popular and come to mind are SW Believable Buff, SW Ivoire and SW Blonde. Here are pictures I found at random on the internet of each color.

All of them offer a different take on the yellow but would work beautifully with those drapes and your colors. Sorry, I know that's not entirely what you were asking for, but I think it would give you the flexibility you are looking for.

So dramatic ... what a lovely home! Since you like color, I would do a mid-tone neutral, something with substance, not too light but something with depth. Does that make sense? A color that has a nice contrast with white trim. You could bring in some bold color with your niche, and even in the arched openings. And then of course, your family room that doesn't have the open floor plan issues could be bolder colors.

I'd do the living and dining room in one color, including the ceiling. Then, I would do the den and kitchen in a different color. Are you looking for more opportunities in color than that?

Hello everyone. Sorry I haven't been here recently. We had family visiting and such. Plus we're preparing the floor in the front room for hardwood installation. Thank you again for all the comments. I found on the Benjamin Moore website a way to upload photos and apply paint, so I played around with that tool a bit. The colours that I picked look much more saturated on my uploaded photos verses the ones you could use that Benjamin Moore website has as it's standard rooms. I'm planning on uploading those photos that I worked on as an example of some of my ideas, although these computer examples are way brighter than I thinking for the actual room. Just wanted to thank everyone again for the tips. I'll upload those photos next and bit by bit this project should come together. Have to run for now. Thanks again for the help.
