This year's panoramic pic(s) (photo heavy)

Well, most of you know I try to post a few pics each year of how my garden has progressed. I just finished working on the panoramic shots ... I got a new program that makes better pans than what I was using before. I live in a 2-story with a walkout basement. Some of these pics are taken from my deck (main level, but 2nd story looking from the back) and some are from our 2nd floor (which is actually the 3rd story, when looking at the back of the house). If the sizes are screwed up, please accept my apologies.

Before my garden was started. This pic was taken Feb/March 2007:

I started working on the garden in May 2007. This pic is from July 2007:

At the end of 2007, I joined the two corner gardens in the middle (close ups below). This pic is from 2008

In 2009, we widened a few spots:

This year, 2010, The main garden didn't experience any changes in its shape, but I did do a fair amount of moving around. Plus, the new garden was added closer to the house (see lower left, by deck)

In past posts, people have commented something like, "it'll be interesting to see how the garden fills in. So, I went back and found pics of the same section of the garden.

When I started my gardens in 2007, I started on the left side, worked into the back left corner and came about 1/3 of the way across the back. I also started in the right corner (with a sun garden).. sorry, no pics... Suffice it to say, it was thin and ugly grass. The first year, I didn't really try to design anything, I just needed the plants put into the ground.

In 2008, I pulled out all the plants, including the TINY TC's from Hostas Direct (lesson learned) and started designing. May 2008-The chicken wire is for wabbit protection.

In 2009,the bed was widened a bit:

In 2010, I started planting the 'front row' with some smaller varieties. As you can see here, a lot of the hostas really started to LEAP!:

Very nice! Isn't it wonderful to get a sense of accomplishment and to see the results of all that labor!

Marvelous! I hear you about just putting in plants with no design. Guess I should follow your lead and begin to think of "the design"!

Thank you both for sharing such beautiful flowers & foliage pics! Bring them on for those of us still waiting for summer to arrive. Here in western WA state we're waaaay behind you all in blooms with only buds on summer bloomers like crocosmia and hydrangea. Most daylilies have yet to open with Stella beginning last week. mxk3 - I just loved your pinks & whites that must make those part sun places shine. Looks like a nice place to rest awhile. kandhi - Wow, your hot colors combinations really stand out and speak, "Summer's here. Bring your sunglasses & lemonade!"

Front yard plantings, bromeliad in Bismarck direct steal from someone on this list, I'll have to look up who it was. Mulch is not done. There were five citrus trees planted last year, and eventually I'd like to see their height in the landscape. It was very bright today and the colors washed out.: Back yard view from house in Oct, got creamed in Dec and Jan, replanted with some cold hardy, some tropicals. New fence next year, and I planted tons of vines to grow up and over. And although I said, "No more bananas!" I lied. I planted two dozen for the leaves.: Shady side, bromeliad garden. And we talked about home-made bird baths. I didn't know what to do with this column, the last owner left it. I'm looking for funky bowls for a birdbath. The Farm:

Congratulations, MrGary.....you've done an outstanding job. I am saving your post to my clippings so I can go back to it easily for reference. I think the one you cannot remember might be Alex Summers. It sure looks like mine. I won't picture it here, but mine is about the same age as yours....I'm just a sophomore with hosta myself, so our plants are "of an age." I'm pleased to see you are growing Banyai's Dancing Girl. It looks almost like Blue Cadet, and it is a very inexpensive choice to mass plant. Van Wade suggests it as an edger if you ever need such a feature. I edge with liriope here in zone 9a. But I am making a collection of the smaller blue hosta such as BC and BDGirl since I don't like being redundant and I like variety. Things such as Drummer Boy, Dear Hearts, Happy Hearts, Cheatin Heart (golden), Golden Tiara, Grand Tiara, Twist of Lime, Lemon Lime, Feather Boa....well, I fibbed, I just like the smaller mounding hosta blue or gold or green! Thanks for treating us to a beautiful garden.

Thank you for the kind comments. Was a struggle and lots of elbow grease to complete. Our goal was to be done by the end of Sept. Looking back, I guess I'm surprised we got done this year at all! The job I work, we're allowed to build "comp" time to take off. I took off 6 weeks of comp, 3 weeks of vacation to help put the biggest dent in it. Looking forward to next year, when we can take a real vacation. Don't think I'd attempt to tackle such a project again. It did help since I spent 10+ years working for a remodeler in my earlier days.

Your gardens look wonderful!Now ,I thought that I had a design until I saw all the pics of gardens on the forum and decided that I need to change it!LOL,Next year though,it is to late in the season in AK, Judy

Melissa, very nice. I like seeing the before and after pictures. It gives a very nice sense of how big and filled in the hostas gets. Thanks for posting them.

It sure is coming along, your hard work is being rewarded, and it's looking fabulous. By super leap year, 2011, there will be scarcely a glimpse of bare ground. By 2013, you'll want me to come out and take divisions to make more room ;-) (Won't you?).

Nice posting, Melissa ... very inspirational and educational... encouraging us to look ahead and plan, and also to have faith that when a plant is listed as 30" in diameter, we'd better give it enough space or plan to have to move it in two or three years. You must just love to walk out on that deck and see the sweep of all you've done!

Melissa,very nice,you have done a lot of hard work,and great planting, as you have moved forward,not always easy to do,just look at how big every thing had gotton in such a short amount of time.Thanks for sharing this with us,always so much fun to see what others have done,and the progress they have made,yours is great.
Don't you just love looking at your garden from up high,it really helps you develop a plan,I think.

pretty, pretty, pretty!They must be happy with the location to be growing so well. I see Hallson's has a sale going on so I might 'need' to expand mine too! Is that your daughter on the patio in the 2009 photo?
