Thought I'd share...

Since I can't grow shastas to save my life in the ground over here, I've resorted to treating like potted annuals:

Rodger, my potted Rodgersia: (I am dreading re-potting him, but that day is coming, the pot is rotting after something like 8-9 years)

Beautiful,love the Rodgersia, I have Fireworks. What is in the pot to the far right in the pics with the dogs.

The purple-y foliage plant is a perilla.

Thank you all for your compliments! The Cl.Pinkie is also one of my favorites and I love how she has done in that corner. Very easy to train rose. Juliet- Thank you for such a beautiful description. Yes, Summerville is a beautiful place to live. It is also called Flower Town as it if full of flowers all year and had loads of gorgeous old plantation houses. Just 20-30 min from historic Charleston. Just yesterday I went for a walk downtown and admired the courtyard gardens full of roses, lovely little flower boxes bursting with color and lots of other flowers. Must come and visit sometime! Masha- Ducher was stunning this year. IN the pic of the driveway border its the one not blooming. She was the first to come into her spring flush. Ingrid- Thank you, yes I do put a lot of thought into flower choices and combination. Cottage gardening is my style and I try to keep the eye flowing through the garden with repeating colors and heights. I do still have a lot of grass and I am working on it. I do have another large rose/perennial bed with several other roses and plants but they are not in the photos. I have the whole side yard planned out but due to the hard terrible clay soil I have started doing the lasagna bed method of laying down cardboard and layering like a compost pile. It worked fantastic last year! I love this method, saves my back, the plants I planted this spring have taken off in it. I'll show some pic's soon. ~Meghan

The black/brown fence actually came out very well. I decided on this early on when I noticed we hadn't had much room in the back and I wanted to hide the ugly fence and to create a perception of depth. So borrowing the idea from inner city gardens here in Toronto, I used it to 'expand' my space. I will post more photos later in the season. My limelight hydrangeas, astilbes, phloxes, lunaria, veronica candelabra are not in bloom yet. The rhododendron and lilac are done though. I use a trio of clematis sharing the same trellis and the one you are seeing in bloom at this moment I think is a simple Jackmanii. I'm afraid I don't take notice to what kinds I have. The pink clematis is just beginning to bloom. An earlier light pink/white clematis is past bloom. I started my verbena from seed indoors. that's because I've failed each time I sow them out directly. I think that's because I have a tendency to weed the soil early in the season and may have killed off the seedlings by accident.

Amazing garden, UK! I must ask - what is the hosta near your potted Sunpower... in full bloom with purple/dark lavender blooms (very floriferous, with rather straight-up scapes). The leaves have a darker center with lighter edges, and it appears you have a group of them massed...? I just love it, and love the look of it in bloom!

Betty, you just showed WHY we've all missed you so much... your photos, your stories, your sense of humor, your Alfred. I'm so glad you are back. He's just the sweetest man and you are so lucky to have him. And getting those pretty Peace ornaments for him was very special. Your tablesetting is beautiful, ALL of it. Those dishes are to die for. I mean I am seriously loving them! And like Jeanne said, they were meant for you to find. (but be careful showing Jeanne anything with pines, LOL. She's like Luvs and her acorns.) As for Christmas stuff during the summer months.. BRING IT ON. That really helps me deal with our 100 degree days and think good thoughts. hugs, Karen

Lovely gardens, and the "girls" are very cute. Also it is cute that you name your plants. I love the Oakleaf hydrangeas together.

Very nice. I love to pot gardens. I have not had much luck with Hydrangea because of the deer they love them.

I have 3 that I am trying to keep but it is touch and go. I brought a variegated one 2 years ago and it is still so small after being deer dinner so many times.

Your gardens look very lush. Endless Summer does not grow well in the ground for me so I grow it in a container on my deck and it is blooming beautifully. The one in the ground is several years old and pathetic. Isn't it funny how a plant that grows well for others can be so difficult for another? Shasta daisies grow well for me with little care and I have many varieties of size, color and petal shape/count.

I think your hydrangea is an oakleaf based on the leaves. Little Lamb is a paniculata.

Do you have deer or rabbits in your area? I am so tired of protecting my plants from them... You have many deer candies in your garden.

Thank you both for sharing such beautiful flowers & foliage pics! Bring them on for those of us still waiting for summer to arrive.

Here in western WA state we're waaaay behind you all in blooms with only buds on summer bloomers like crocosmia and hydrangea. Most daylilies have yet to open with Stella beginning last week.

mxk3 - I just loved your pinks & whites that must make those part sun places shine. Looks like a nice place to rest awhile.

kandhi - Wow, your hot colors combinations really stand out and speak, "Summer's here. Bring your sunglasses & lemonade!"
