Turf

Hi

Not much of a gardener, but I'm moving to a new house, got a young son who I'd like to use the garden and the lawn's a bit of a tip.

I've seen a site (www.rolawndirect.co.uk) that sells turf online and my more garden-centric friend says their stuff is pretty good. Is it easy to lay (obviously on the site they reckon it is) or would I be better getting a professional in? And is Rolawn the right turf to buy anyway? And should I even buy turf online?

Sorry - a thousand stupid questions and its only my first post!

Turf is an absolute doddle to lay if you can lift a few pounds, get down on your knees, and don't mind getting your hands dirty. Soil preparation is much more important and time-consuming, but you can also do that yourself. The soil proparation is what determines how good your lawn will look in a year's time and onwards, plus how flat it stays.

P.S. I've seen "professionals" who just plonk the turf down on top of the existing rocks/clay/whatever. Looks great for about a month ;)

Yikes! I can see where that is a problem. I had a 14 year old who could not make the 4 stairs to the ward so I placed a piece of the turf on the porch. She used it all the time, but it did get rank! My yard install took a full week with new drainage and lots of underlaying stone and sand. So I am sure that is why it still works for me.

Luckily for me the sprinklers are already installed from the prior grass we had so reconfiguring a few to water down the turf every once in a while is simple. We are looking at Global Synturf right now which has a W Blade 80 turf that is suppose to be 15 degrees cooler. We did look at Tiger which seems very similar. Also looked at Grasstex (which I love but its the most expensive and the one that holds the most heat), Purchase Green and one more I can't remember the name of that was similar to Tiger. We are looking at using Zeolite for the infill instead of sand to help with the heat and odors for pets, etc. Rubber bits are used for sports field and now there are other options beside those nasty little things for fields too. It's a huge decision and I hope we don't make a mistake installing this stuff. It seems like the installers here can't get it down fast enough to keep up the demand for turf right now.

1. Costs will vary depending on the quality of the artificial turf and whether or not it has any special characteristics. I've seen prices as low as $2/square foot to as high as $20+/square foot. And then there are installation costs involved as well. 2. Weeds will not grow through artificial turf of reasonable quality. But unless cleaned or hosed off regularly, dirt and debris can blow in and get caught in the turf blades and become a growing medium for weed seeds. Regular maintenance and cleaning will prevent this. 3. I have no answer for this. 4. Artificial turf can become very hot when exposed to the sun....perhaps too hot for kids to run barefoot or play comfortably.

I think you are raising the outside half with the sod spoils, layed right on top of the existing sod. After you install your stone, that area will all compost and sink, but not uniformly. You'll have pockets and such. Also, the inside half next to the porch is being dug with a pointed shovel, and leaving all those pockets, to be filled with stone, is not a good idea either. The base for your stone should be a smooth, compacted area. So you'll have to spend much more blood, sweat, and tears digging more for a uniform surface. If you are literally "throwing down" stone and don't mind the constant maintenance of the composting sod, pockets, or a professional-like end result, then what you are doing is acceptable.

We were in a similar situation a few years ago - lawn was a mess, so we thought we'd re-turf it. Pretty hard work - partly because of all the rotovating/raking the soil to get it level and good for turfing.. we hired a petrol rotovator which was pretty useless on our clay-ey soil. And partly because the turves themselves are quite heavy, so just moving them into position is a bit knackering.

But we went with http://www.onlineturf.co.uk/ who did everything as promised and were the cheapest we could find.. I suppose it depends on the size of your lawn - if it's a good size be prepared for some hard work!

Hi, just found this post. We recently re-did our whole garden and found the how to guides on this site really useful.
We also purchased many products from them including the turf, soil and gravel as well as the membrane which we were advised by their staff to order - very glad we listened to their advice, not a weed in sight.
