I had this happen to some of my blooms yesterday also, but not all of them. I am not sure you can do much to stop them burning. This happened to me a lot last year so I started picking the blooms in the morning and bringing them inside just to 'salvage' them because I got so upset seeing them fry on the bush within a few hours of opening.
Not sure liquid fertiliser would help. I give mine a drink of liquid seaweed every 10 days or so but that is more to strengthen the plant in the hope they will cope with the drought better (that is my theory anyway) I don't think giving them anything would stop the blooms from frying though. I was at least hoping to enjoy a few months of blooms before they started frying in Summer but it seems Spring has gone already.
Perhaps someone else will have some advice.

No advice, MM; just sympathy. The same happened with most of my roses. The foliage hasn't suffered; just the flowers. Just knew I should have picked them yesterday morning.

Spring should be the best time for Brisbane roses but it appears that season is getting briefer each year.

O Dear well it seems that it is happening all round here, so I am not the only one who is suffering from fried roses, that make me feel a little better, though but I am so sorry that yours roses V and Hazel have suffered the same.

You mention Spring what Spring two weeks was about all we got and the winds they are terrible all the garden is drying out so fast reguardless of all the thick mulch I have on mine.I told hubby this morning I was going back to Melbourne to live so I know how you feel Hazel.

I think Seduction is about the only standard rose I have that looks OK, some of the worst are Camp David, Charles de Gaulle and La Sevillana and the four above.

MM, I hope your roses fair better as they acclimatise to the hot wheather. In the meantime, you might try Yates Stressguard.

I am so sorry for you all, how sad for you, after waiting with such anticipation for your beautiful flowers.
I have just built a garden and it has 5 unflowering plants in it but today I am really worried as the strong hot norwesterly wind is really burning off even the succulents I have.
It is in a great place for the winter sun, but not the summer so it may be back to the drawing board before I get
it too full.
Melbourne and Tasmania sound like a great idea.

Dear MM I know this wont help your present situation but you might like to consider planting St Patrick which is a beautiful yellow rose which thrives on sun (the hotter the better or so Im told) Does anyone in Qld grow this? If so how does it go up there? I should add that I grow this rose in Melb and even in very hot weather it is fine down here. cheers pam

I feel sorry for you MM - it sounds like you have tried very hard - I guess it is really the plant that matters rather than the bloom although it must be awful to see them burn. I have been reading some of Alister Clark's essays from another thread and some on droughts of the 1940's and it makes one realise that this is not new. If your bushes survive, maybe they will be very strong?

MM - do you belong to a Rose Society? You had me searching for my most recent edition of The Australian Rose Annual, because at the back of the book is a list of roses recommended for growing in Queensland... and you guessed it, Crepuscule IS listed!

We find down south that the first heat wave plays havoc with the blooms too...because they are so soft in spring, lovely new growth etc.

You seem to be doing the right thing using a deep mulch. Do you drip irrigate? Have you checked whether your soil is water repellant? Apart from rigging up some sort of moveable shade cloth, the best you can do is perhaps make a list of the roses that succumb with an aim to replacing them sometime in the future with roses that can survive high temperatures, because it seems Q'land is having shorter and shorter springs and longer dryer and hotter summers than before. And no - don't feed them with liquid fertiliser, that'll make them even softer.

Marion maybe you should look for ones suited to the hotter areas before you plant any more I found this list in a gardening magazine at the Library only the person that wrote it lived up Mt Tamborine, some I have never heard of.Roses for the Sub Tropics: Crepuscule, Mutabilis, Monsieur Tiller, Dutchesse de Brabant, Felicia, Buff beauty, Penelope, Dublin Bay, Pierre de Ronsard and David Austin Cultivars. Most of them are Pink coloured.

Pam I have seen a pic of that one did some research on it had a type of green centre I will keep that in mind, funny about my three lighter ones, Iceberg, Edelweiss, and Seduction they were all fine.

Hi Von, no I dont irrigate we are not allowed, only hand held hoses after 7pm till 7am three nights a week, thats why I am up before 5am watering my garden as I cannot handle the mozzies or the dark as we are on 3/4 acre so heaps of plants to water but we are allowed to water with a bucket anytime but sadly I hurt my right shoulder doing the veggie gardens on Monday so now I can only lift my fingers so the buckets are out.

Our soil is very fine ground silt that hardens like concrete when it dries out so full of clay, when we made this new bed in April we put three full bags of gypsum in it and bought two trailer loads of sandy soil to mix with what we have here a huge pile in the chook yard, also added lots of wetta soil granules. I am managing to keep the water up ok. No I dont belong to a Rose Society, I did do a lot of research but hey they are roses and its hard to go pass the ones you like and want, but Thanks anyway everyone you have all been a great help, and cheered me up a lot .....MM.

For everybody in Queensland having trouble with "fried roses", let me TRY and give some free advice. The Rose Society CAN help. It is absolutely useless to consider supplements.

Petals scorching indicates one thing only. The plant is lacking moisture. The next stage will be the foliage scorching. Roses need deep watering, not a sprinkle on the surface. Any plant will have to be nurtured through the first year, but roses need soaking for water to reach depths. What happened to burying the neck of a two litre container near a plant, cut the base off, and regularly fill and allow to drain into the ground.

MM, you have told me of your vast experience, so I am bemused that you ask here for help. I apologise in advance.

MM - you have a good spirit about it! I have found the heritage rose society in my area has been wonderful to belong to and I would not miss a meeting as there are so many experienced people who live in my area and people bring cuttings or plants to others and it is a lovely community - so look for your group - they are on the web as there is a national network of heritage rose societies.

- you say you have not heard of some of these - nor had I until 2 years ago but I am falling in love with them - many of these are tea roses which came from hot regions in China I think and have a reputation for being tough and able to keepp flowering once established in hot and inhospitable regions like gravesites where some have flowered without care for 50 years or longer. As I write I look out on 2 Mr Tilliers, a new Duchesse, 2 Buff Beautys, and 3 Penelopes, and a new Pierre. They are all luscious - if you do not want pink, then there is also safrano which is a delicious buff but penelope is simply divine as a white with tinges of cream and softest pink - have a look at picutres of these on http://www.helpmefind.com/index.html - Sandie has posted some gorgeous photos of buff beauty and others on here that first made me think about planting these - perhaps next year try planting some of the old teas and see how they go?

Where on the flowers and leaves, as it is certainly not the roots as they are watered a bucket of water each now on the days when we are not permitted to use the hand held hose of a night 7pm - 7am and living in Qld one thing you DONT do is sprinkle sprinkle you water deeply and I dont even water my roses from the top I put the hose underneath the mulch and sit there poking holes into the soil would you believe to make sure it goes in, then I go back and do them all again now what more can I do. Its a direct sun thing and nothing to do with moisture. I do realise I picked the wrong roses for our climate even after researching a lot of them but if you look up top others have done the same, but Thanks for your advice about the moisture any other ideas.

And Kevarose they do sound as those they are the best ones for our climate yes I have helpmefind bookmarked and use it often and I have seen sandie's pics and they are all beautiful. No I dont think I will bother with any more I will just try and keep these 34 that I have now, even though it looks like moving them all again next year but Thanks ever so much for all your Help...Cheers..MM

It is saddening MM pretty much the same scenario here. Fortunately no foliage damage but all flowers certainly fried.
We need to invent a spray on sun screen for roses with a spf of about 50. A sort of slip slop slap for roses.
My tomatoes even crisped up the other day too despite shade cloth....if its not my dear old garden possum whom I love dearly then its the sun. I am feeling very unloved by nature at the moment.
Least we are not totally dependant on our gardens for the dinner table.

The majority on my rose blooms have brown spotty type marks on the petals of the blooms - I have about 15 rose plants and they all have this problem.
Can someone help me by:-

1. Telling me the cause of it
2. How can I fix it

This is my 2nd question I have posted and the first question I asked and was most grateful with the answers which I took on board.

Don't fertilise,keep up the water like you have been,don't contemplate planting under trees next year,and for therapy, excite yourself with the choosing of better,heat tolerant roses for next year (we all try roses which don't work out for one reason or another,rose nurseries included...happens every year) and finally but most important,don't look at your flowers again until the temp. drops(a Queenslander adaptation).
PS These hot spells happen almost every year but not necessarily in Summer.Relatively cool Summers, can and do still happen.In the late 80's they said the homes along the Maroochy River would be flooded away from sea levels rising by the early 2000's.The time has come and gone and the sea aint risen one bit.
PPS Theres lots of roses with heat resistant flowers to choose from eg Loves Gift.

Hi MM, If your roses are relatively newly planted, then they are only "babies" and have not handled the stress of the hot weather very well. Their root systems are not fully established to be able to take advantage of the moisture that you have put into the soil. Don't think about moving them too soon, let them mature and see if they handle the conditions better. My roses are in full sun in a very open garden, and we get some very hot days in summer here in southern NSW. Some varieties seem to be able to handle the heat, others fry on the first hot day. Usually our first hot days are late October, early November, just when the roses are in all their glory. I always pray that the hot spell will come a little later and allow the roses to flower longer. As someone said above, the spring growth is soft and not able to handle the early heat. Don't be disillusioned, be patient and coddle your youngsters a little longer.

This is one of my fried roses. They were not too bad until yet another day of sweltering heat and wind. These roses are in the corner of the pool enclosure and 2 days ago were all only buds.....These roses are all under shade cloth as we have sails completely covering the entire pool area so the children are completely shaded whilst swimming. This is one of the roses I bought from Donelle's as a QLD proof rose. This is not a young rose either. I snapped this photo at night just now as I have been out with my buckets. The flash has over exposed it a bit, so sorry about photo quality.

Hi MM I am so sorry to read about your roses after all your excitement, makes me glad I live in a much cooler climate, however when our bad heat comes around late Dec. through Feb. some of mine fry also I find Autumn is the very best time for roses, what I plan to do this summer is pick the vulnable flowers in the early morn, & enjoy inside good luck with them

Misty, "Where on the flowers and leaves, as it is certainly not the roots". A rose above the scion is a product of what lies beneath. Insufficient moisture - petal and/or leaf scorch. Surely you have noticed in the afternoon of a hot day, new sappy growth flopping, only to find next morning, the same growth is standing again? Moisture rises to the cooler night air, the plant is rejuvinated. DEEP water your roses!

Sorry to hear about your roses, I think it is part of life in Brisbane at times and I agree what Spring!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had a learning curve with roses for Brisbane - ones that fade their color in a day and are a revolting washed out color and others that burn quite badly.

My only solution for the burning is the same as Vee - pick them in the morning when they are just opening from the bud - don't let the sun waste them and they are so lovely in the house and on my work desk.
With the water restrictions now -What a pain in the neck deep watering 280 roses at their base before 7am in the morning twice a week - it might make a dint on my ordering next year : )

Good luck with everyone's roses till we calm down in March. Think about Scubamaid in North Queensland with her roses!

Ps: The worst fading rose I have is Mariana-beautiful orange blend color for only about 4 hours in our sun.

Hi MM,all of my roses are near the house and get just the right amount of sun and afternoon shade.I think it,s a habit of mine of growing plants next to buildings for different shelter.Gold Bunny is on a fence but near it is a yucca and cumquat tree,no problem with burning.If I feel any good and get my next rose bed going,it will be between a shed which has some tropicals and pawpaws growing next to it and two Bottlebrush and a large Grapefruit tree,I havn,t used afoliar spray as yet,thanks to the shade.My Abraham Darby came out the flower was too big for the branch,should have staked it.I staked it and went to the specialist doctors this morning,when I came home the flower had shrunk,silly me had accidentally broken the stem,didn,t have me glasses on,the smell was brilliant,greencroc.

We are supposed to get rain over the next couple of days - Pray as all our gardens need a good does of pure rain!

I planted my new bed so it got afternoon shade from the 30x30 shed
its not helping much though, the jolly wind is drying everything out.

I had problem with powdery mildew MM and being fairly new to roses it was a real wake up.Lost a few buds to some sort of grub but I,m learning,Jubilee Celebration came out today,lovely rose,took one photo of it half open,take another tomorrow.Peace has a huge couple of buds on it,all the best greencroc.
