Growing roses is about sharing, you share what you have in common. Certain things may not be, that part you dismiss or don't enter what doesn't pertain. But, there are a lot of general conversations that cross zones and it doesn't matter. Everyone has an off day. The purpose of this pic at the time was the grandgirl and my dog. This is still CA, zone 7 or 8, I forget, but 3 month growing season. Couple roses are showing off to the left of the pic that were left growing there. Deer a big problem. I lived there for 13 years until 2005. It isn't just endless sun and growing in CA:) That's just an assumption, BTW this is still just an hour and a half east of where I am now.

OK, I resign! Bad idea. However as Veilchen said please identify where you live. Now including Austin's with Antiques! Just because they look like "some" Antiques. What a dumb idea is that. One of the great attributes of Antiques is that they have been around for along time: therefore they have withstood the test of time and the trials of different climates and soils. Can you say the same thing about David Austins roses? Another point is that by having a separate forum for Antiques it gives special attention to them which otherwise may get indunated with comments about the new. And unproven! It reminds me of a Kordes rose I once was enthralled with, I even forget its' name, died and isn't even offered anywhere anymore. So obviously is the fate of those unmentioned new roses. Finally, there are of older roses that look like Austins but are not included. Take Alchymist for example. Or Magenta, really a lowzy rose but still it looks like an A. And others.

I would say this is a rose mostly for the collector of oddities. Old roses are also my favorite flowers and this one is technically an old rose, plus a china, which is very suited to my climate, but I don't think I would plant it in my current garden, where space is at a premium. Too many old teas, chinas and noisettes I would plant first. As Annette says, it's quite a conversation piece though. If you like unusual plants this one seems to fit your bill. "It is not hardy in very cold climates, and is known to die back to the ground most years in zones 5 and 6." Since you're in zone 5, I would suggest you pick a rose grown on its own roots, and not grafted. If it dies down to the ground level for you, it has a chance to resprout back in Spring, if you mulch it well. This doesn't happen with a grafted rose, because what would be sprouting back would be the rootstock, not the rose itself. Good luck with your zone pushing :-) Eduarda

jjpeace, I'd love to see what your pegged roses look like. I've never tried it. I haven't visited garden centers either (or anywhere for that matter). It does take patience when you live in a short growing season climate. One thing we can console ourselves with is the farther north we are, the longer our summer days are for a while, at least. Did you lose the three roses because of cold weather? I'm sorry to read that, and Evelyn is a favorite of mine, too, though she gave me the willies with her first blooms a little while ago--lots of proliferations popped out--ick. Yes, you are patient, much more than I am, and I admire what you can accomplish in your short season--not just the roses but the other flowers you grow, I remember how you fooled me with one of your photos--lots of big blooming roses, and I didn't even see the pots. They looked great. I hope you have a repeat of that this year. Diane
