Gruss van Aachen--my first bloom for the season

OOOHH...I bought this as a standard towards the end of the season last year from Kmart for $10!!!

It did nothing last year, I think it was on its last legs so it cut it right back and fed and looked after it.

Now I see it has 3 buds with one beautiful opening bloom!!

I brought the bloom inside, it opened and has the most beautiful fragrance.

My first bloom for this year.......so excited.

It seems a bit blurred-sorry-I guess I got a bit excited!

I also have some buds on a new bare root "Mary MCKillop" and a beauty on "Just Joey"

It sure is an exciting time.

Looks more like Souvenir de la Malmaison bud, can you post another picture when it opens more? I have both growing and my SDLM has buds, none opened yet this season. Gruss an Aachen has a ruffled centre and is one of my all time favourites.

Yes, Connie, any bloom counts. I've just been oohing and ahing over a quarter-inch flower on the windowsill cactus. Catrose, this is a great time of the year to live in Texas, but when your roses are peaking, ours will be sad, brown-edged crispy critters. I love crocus, too, Kate, but they're something else Dallas doesn't do well. They'll last maybe a couple of years here before deciding it's too darn hot. Molly, how big does Spice get for you? I'd love to be able to shoehorn it in somewhere. I agree, Melissa, that not all zone 8's are created equal. Even the pros here can't grow roses to the perfection that you do, or the lucky folks who in Oregon and Washington. Maybe summer temperatures should be taken into consideration as well. Kathy, Martha G was my first OGR. I went to the nursery to get a Knockout but saw her instead, and that led me to this forum. How lucky was that!

At our local HD I noticed they also had Gruss AA and Reine des Violettes which I think I'd love but after mentally debating for awhile decided to walk away . I've just not had great luck with the body bag roses personally and still I'm ALWAYS tempted! These did have strong canes, tons of leaves...see how the rose addiction gets the mind to think! I even went on HMF to look them over again today... it's hard not to "try" them for under $5.00. At least that is what my devilish side is telling me.

Hi Everybody! So sorry I haven't been back for so long - I really don't know where the times goes. Thank you all for your input. Since I last posted, I have noticed a few buds, maybe 8 (!) on the whole plant. One has opened the proper light pink. Last year I had dieback down to about 3 feet, but it grew back like gangbusters, just as yours did, Mary, but no blooms at all. This spring, there was just a little tip damage, so I assumed I would get a wonderful show, it being the fourth year since planting. Even the second year, when it actually bloomed well, it never repeated, and so I thought then that perhaps I had Dr. Van Fleet. Does DVF form buds and bloom much later than New Dawn? Would it possibly form buds gradually, or only all at once? Thanks so much for your help, Judith

Glorious! My 2nd Evergreen spike will open today I think...long long stem on that baby! Now I will get to actually see what it is supposed to look like. The first bud was so dried out in transit it was hard to tell. My 3 replacement "Angelique"s from McClure and Zimmerman are sending up buds now, anxious to show me that they really are the one's I had ordered last year (that they sent me an unidentified pink instead o). Next will probably be my new Lemon Sorbet from Van Engelin. And Carnival is starting to push up buds.I have 3 of each of those. I have 40 mostly new ones potted up now, and will start potting my old ones and in another 2 weeks. I will have to stage them carefully this year to give everyone a turn at the lights!

It does have a ruffled centre --its not clear on the photos.

I'm still not totally convinced its GAA because of those outer petals. Have a look at this picture of mine flowering last spring and you'll note the outer petals are loose not cupped. Those first flowers whether for a new variety in the garden or of the year are so exciting aren't they!
I grow GAA too, mine are somewhere in between the two flower shapes in the piccies.
...a GAA standard in Kmart!..well, I'd never have expected to hear of that!
