first rose of the season!

Well, it snowed 6 inches today .... but so what!! I went to Home Depot and they had about 10 bagged rose bushes. I bought a Gruss an Aachen (sp?). I wouldn't bother buying a rose so early, except I've never seen this rose here before. So I had to have it after such evil enablers on this forum!!! LOL

The growth was there, yet not spindly. There's a bit of canker (which I'll cut off tomorrow). Temperature is supposed to be 6C tomorrow, so on Monday the snow should be gone and I'll pot up that rose and take all my other overwintered in the garage roses and stick them outside for the daytime hours.

I might be disappointed with this rose, since I've never bought a bagged rose before. But it was only $5.00 and I've been looking for a few years for this rose.

Keep us posted on how well its doing for you.

Back in the days I would have been so tempted, but not anymore. After putting lots of energy and time, trying to make them make it through, the frill for buying bagged roses are gone.

Hi Carol, I do wish you luck with your new rose. It is a beautiful one I don't blame you for getting that baby. I have bought some body bags this year to try them out. I hope they do ok. I also bought quite a few potted ones I hope do great too!! Best wishes, Judy

Congrats on blooms! I saw your pics of the siberian Iris as well I love them ! But nothing in bloom on mine yet. I have some bearded iris up and running though. I too have alot of roses JUST ready to open. Maybe this next few days of warm weather will kick them in gear!

Very pretty, Pat! What's her name? I've got blooms on my climbers, Don Juan, Westerland, Iceberg and Sombreuil as well as Trumpeteer. Marilyn Monroe and some of the English roses (Fair Bianca and Glamis Castle) have started to open a few blooms. The roses DO look good this year! Last year was so wet, they got every fungal disease around. I noticed just a bit of powdery mildew from these hot days and cool nights, but no rust, blackspot or downy mildew (knock on wood!) so far. pelicanhead - I can relate to your excitement! Congratulation to your first rose flower of this year! Even though we are both in SoCa in the same zone, my roses are far behind your Sandra. I pruned relatively late, the second and third week of February, so I have to wait a little longer! I am curious, when did you prune your roses? Thanks for sharing the picture!

You will like GaA, I added it last year to the potted collection that over winter in the garage and it has done quite well.

congrats on the great find, I was at our HD on Friday but their shipment hadn't come in yet. Do you happen to remember any of the other varieties that your HD had in stock?

I was at Menard's buying some ProMix and the body bags were calling out to me...None of the reputable nurseries in my zone even have roses yet...

At our local HD I noticed they also had Gruss AA and Reine des Violettes which I think I'd love but after mentally debating for awhile decided to walk away . I've just not had great luck with the body bag roses personally and still I'm ALWAYS tempted! These did have strong canes, tons of leaves...see how the rose addiction gets the mind to think! I even went on HMF to look them over again today... it's hard not to "try" them for under $5.00. At least that is what my devilish side is telling me.
