Anyone in Melbourne want Frangipani cuttings

Hubby and I are driving down to Melbourne in a couple of weeks and are bringing down

some cuttings for my Family to try growing, and have a few spares. White, Tricolour,

Also some mystery ones given to me to pot up but dont know the colour.

Also have pieces of the tricolour one " Fruit Salad " not potted up.

If you are interested please e-mail me I will be staying in the Lower Plenty / Yallambie area.

That's a wonderful offer, and the fruit salad variety is a beautiful frangipani. It's almost impossible to get anything other than the common yellow/white frangi in Melb, so you'll probably be inundated with takers--I reckon you should at least get treated to a cup of coffee from one of Melbourne's fine cafes for your kindness! (And remember to wear layers of clothing, so that you can peel them off as you step from the cold outdoors to heated interiors: don't make the mistake of wearing thermal underwear, or you'll find yourself walking around in your own personal sauna!)

c"mon its not that cold down here though might be later today, I would take you up on the offer misty morn but we are in gippsland (latrobe valley) so alittle bit away from where you will be ,but good luck I am sure someone will say thank you muchly, any way enjoy your trip

I’m on the mornington peninsula in Victoria and have killed every frangipani I’ve had. This time I’m determined. The frost has started so I’ve bought a little cheap greenhouse from Bunnings and put it in that but also put it on our sunniest wall next to our hot water heater to hopefully create some humidity. Luckily also, this position happens to be in front of our toilet window so I can still keep a really good eye on it! It seems to be working so far and it’s dropped to 2 degrees some mornings. I also just read on another page to surround it with rocks. The rocks, when hit with the sun retain the heat and keep it a bit warmer. So I’ll be doing that today!! It’s leaves are going a little bit yellow, does that mean it needs a fertiliser? I’ve lost maybe 4 so far but still seem to be getting the little new growth in the middle, I figure they are good signs?

wow...thanks for that link. i'll give it a good reading... we've had a pityful summer, true. barely breaking 25 degrees. nothing short of lacklustre, but anyway... i posted the same post on the american aspect of this site, under the 'plumeria' section, and a guy posted back this clever technique which shows if your frangipani cutting is on the way out. he explains that if you prick the cutting down at the bottom, near the 'cut', it should bleed white sap. if it doesn't keep pricking all the way up the cutting until you find a spot where it bleeds. here is where you re-cut the cutting, and allow it do dry out again...i have two cuttings that are kinda squishy when i squeeze them, and i'm pretty much bracing myself for the worst. these cuttings however bleed down the bottom of the cutting. they don't bleed all that viscously, but they bleed. i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for a 'resurrection', if possible... heh...i have been taking photos of the frangis' growing progress. i doubt they would make anything other than 'quaint' reading/viewing matter, as they are really small and nothing too special looking. i guess they could serve as "you can grow frangipanis in melbourne too!" confirmation photos or something...heh. thanks for the tips, mm...

wow...thanks for your reply... how tall were they before they started to flower? whereabouts in nsw are you? also, how do you 'treat' the seeds before you actually plant them? there is some technique where you seed to semi-soak the seeds or something before you can actually plant them in soil... so, you don't need the perlite/cactus mix then? ordinary soil will do it???

Frangipanis root easily from quite large cuttings. I don't know anyone who has used a 2m high cutting but imagine it should be possible (I'm assuming you want to keep it that size to have an instant frangipani tree?) so long as you can keep the cutting upright and firmly in place rather than have it wobbling or keeling over. This means somehow staking the cutting in place because if you planted it deep enough to stop it keeling over, most of the cutting would probably be underground! This is what I'd do: If the soil is well drained, you can plant it in the ground. Dig a hole, insert the cut end of the cutting, then backfill. If your soil is sandy, use that; otherwise buy a sandy potting mix and backfill with that. Then somehow stake the cutting, using two or three stakes and maybe tying it with pantyhose, to keep the cutting upright. For extra drainage or a bit of extra weight, you can even add about an inch of gravel around the cutting. You can water it *lightly* once now, preferably with a few drops of Seasol in the water, but then do not water again until you're sure that the soil around the cutting is dry. (Rain would probably be sufficient.) The problem with planting it outside is that it will be rained on; if it rains heavily before the cutting has struck, it might rot even if the soil is sandy. Also, it must be in a spot where you're not regularly watering other plants around it, for the same reason. If you can't root it in the ground, buy yourself one of those old-fashioned plastic rubbish bins, drill many holes in the base, fill it with a sandy mix and plant your cutting in there. But you'll have to find a way to keep the cutting upright again--maybe by placing the bin up against a pole or pillar and tying the cutting to that? Water lightly with Seasol. This way you can completely control the level of moisture the cutting gets. Keep the cutting in a warm and sunny/brightly lit spot. If it won't fit in such a bin, buy one of those 200L compost bins and use that. Hope that helps. The main reason that frangipani cuttings fail is (1) too much water; and (2) too cold temps. The latter shouldn't be a problem at this time of year, so just make sure that you only water if the soil around the cutting is definitely dry. And then, water lightly only; don't saturate the soil/mix. I'd do the same with the other large 1.5m pieces but, as an insurance policy, I'd cut one piece into foot-long lengths and root those in pots of sandy potting mix. Check out the plumeria website for extra info: http://www.plumeria101.com/cuttings101.html Normally frangipani cuttings are supposed to be allowed to dry a little (at least until the sap stops running), so don't worry that you might have left it too late to plant the cuttings. They can be planted right now or in a week or two weeks' time, easily. Hope this helps. Your neighbour's loss is your gain!

I don't want to rain on your parade but you might want to check out what you can bring across the border with regard to plants, fruits and vegetables. There are strict rules if coming down by road to protect against fruit fly. I may be wrong about plant specimens but you might want to check prior to avoid disappointment.

Thanks everyone for your input but having lived in Melbourne for 45 years believe me I know all about the weather.

Sorry Lorraine if we were coming via that way I would pop in with one or two or three for you and all different colours.

Pepino I dont want to bring fruit or vegetables across the border. I have posted down so many kilo's of plants the past year free to our GW Members so whats the difference with road travel by Aust Post and road travel by us. I have tried to find out before about it but your DPI web site does not help much.

Having traveled the NSW/VIC border many times in my youth and sitting by the border eating a tin of ham so they would not bin it ( they said ) and seeing them dispose of a small amount of fruit that was then, this is now last time I went through there was no one on the border at all just a bin with a sign on it saying more or less dump your fruit before you go across the border

But no sign saying please dispose of Frangipani cuttings.

You might be right about plants and cuttings.

I know there is no one sitting there any more but they do random road checks and once you're in there is no amnesty.

I hope you saved the state from any fruit flies there may have been in that tin of ham LOL.

Pepino That tin of ham came from a supermarket in """Melbourne""" that I bought when I lived there and taken across the border to NSW where we were camping at the time and we were not allowed to bring it back into Vic as they had a ban on pork meat then as well as fruit even if we purchased both in Victoria.

I have no intention of bringing unwanted plants into Victoria so I will leave them all here and send my Sisters ones down by road by Aust Post.

It is so hard to find frangipani cuttings here. I'm looking for a cutting over 1.5 meters and would love to pay for your troubles.
