My Reconciliation rose is recovering!!(pic)

HI everyone

I have had this rose for about 3 years and its one of my favourites.

About a month ago it started looking very sick and getting worse.I tried everything but to no avail.So I cut it back as you would for a winter prune,like 3 canes etc and repotted it into new potting mix and container.

After a number of weeks I noticed a few shoots and then yesterday some new foliage!

I think it may be back on the road to recovery,anyway hopeful signs!

We'll seee how it goes but there may be life in the old girl after all!

Thats wonderful Michelle I do hope it continues getting more shoots..
I did a similar thing to my Alexander only I dug mine out of the garden and potted it up.
And like yours, mine has started to grow new foliage, a second chance perhaps...Cheers..MM.

Does the American Rose Society have recommendations on rose rosette? I found articles on their website. When contacting the local society, it would appear they believe there are large numbers of herbicide damage being mistaken as rosette, and there is just no way to tell attitude. I was hoping to find someone besides myself, and the local extension to confirm to others that what is present is actually rosette. I thought if there was a rose expert I could recommend to my HOA to consult with maybe they would wake up. I viewed pictures of herbicide damage, and it looks different. The local extension agent knows the difference, and has seen the difference. My fear is others may take the it is just herbicide damage no worries here attitude. Another resident removed diseased bushes, I wanted to cry when I saw it, because I was so happy someone actually paid attention. Anyone know if you can get arrested from taking photos at public places considered private property such as shopping centers?

You cant always count on the same plant, planted far from one another, to react to growth habit the same way. Like children, each has it's own way. The soil is/likely not of the same structure and therefore, takes up moisture in a different way. Cultivation should be done shallow...to not bother the roots. Instead of fertilizing in a hit and miss way, try to feed the plants on a scheduled program....every 2 weeks with a water soluble type, or as the label directs with a granular type. Work in with your hands....you can usually feel the soil at the plant's base and tell if it needs water. Roses....its the old story---do not like wet feet...they don't appreciate heavy watering; rather regular watering is better with good drainage. If you feel you have damaged areas, cut that back to good growth to an outward facing bud. Any damaged stems cut it out. Don't leave damaged or weak canes to spread whatever is causing a problem. Keep watering to mid morning or late afternoon to let the sun dry them. Spray only the leaves and/or the soil at the base of the plant. Spray can be a general purpose one or one designed for specific rose problems and that can be done too on a regular basis and not wait for a problem before you get to it

Thank you everyone. I have really been working on improving my soil the past three years and that has made a big difference, I believe. Good soil - good plants. Good rainfall, this year too. Belinda's Dream looks like a big, fat pink Snowflake. And she smells divine. Has a good strong fragrance. She likes full sun, no ifs, ands or buts about it. That 5-inch bloom is on a plant that is only two feet tall. I rooted it last spring. I just stuck a broken off branch in the ground, and no kidding, she rooted in about three weeks and began blooming within a month. Poor little plant was bent over double with those big blooms. She bloomed all summer last year. This year, her blooms are even bigger. I totally love Belinda's Dream. In front of her is a rose cutting I got from plantmaven. I think it is Rosa, Heritage, although I can't be certain. She is only 18 inches tall and has bloomed twice already this year. She bloomed last year too, but much smaller blooms on an 8 inch plant. She has a strong, lovely old rose fragrance and sweet baby pink color. I just cannot get enough roses! It is my new freak! If I keep on like this, I will have to change my home name from Iowa Hills Herb Farm to Rose Hill Cottage! Thanks again everyone. I'll be sure to tell my rose-girls how much you all love them. ~Annie

I also think it looks like canker. The organisms that cause canker are around all the time and enter through the "skin" of a plant when it is injured, cold can cause injury so that spring is a common time to see canker damage. If the canker encircles the stem, all nutrients are cut off and the stem above the canker dies. If the canker does not encircles the stem, then it should recover. I agree that pith will show if the stem is alive or not, but you must cut off the stem off to see the pith, it is that corky stuff in the middle of a stem, but now the cane is dead for sure. You can check for life under the bark with the scratch test, and as long as there is green under the brown, there is hope. It can be false hope because the stem could have died below where you scraped and the top of the stem as yet to die, that's why a stem can continue to produce foliage for a short time even after it is dead lower down. In my experience, you can kill a weak plant by pruning off all the canker damaged stems, when if you just left it alone, it be would be ok. You can always prune the stem later if it dies, If it is a vigorous plant then pruning it won't hurt, do clean your cutters after each cut. You do not want to spread it to healthy wood.

Good luck Michelle! Getting new foliage is the most relieving feeling - and waiting for something to happen on a bush that has died back can be terribly worrying.

Michelle I have had it about 3 years. It is a standard and gets afternoon shade,rebloom is good and apart from a bit of pm early in the season it has been problem free. Looks like yours is on the wayback, so well done pam

Yes, koiwabiru ,seeing the foliage almost sent me to the fridge to crack open a bottle of bubbly!!!The waiting was rerrible.I still dont know how it will turn out if the rose is weakened...I dont know what happened to it..it just gave up the ghost.

Your rose as I said before is stunning.I had mine for a similiar time.I woyuld imagine it would be fantastic as a standard.
