(afternoon tea, a night of clubbing, perhaps a world cruise), who would they be and what would the event be?

Reminds me of when I was working and would come home after a stessful day. I was a supervisor at an auto assembly plant. Job pressure was horrendous. I'd come home, notice a weed or bloom that needed deadheading and stop for a minute to take care of them. After an hour or two, my wife would call out and ask me if I was coming in. I'd be working in my dress shirt and tie and not notice it. My roses were my chance to relax and wind down.. Same thing happens now, except I don't work anymore. I do get the same relaxation though. I'll step out the door, spot something that needs tending, jump on my Rascal, and be outside for hours. People stopping and looking don't bother me one bit. I actually enjoy sharing my roses and answering questions. That's what's nice about being retired, I can take time to give an impromptu garden tour, that often ties me up for a couple of hours, and still get my chores finished. While showing people around and answering questions, I'll be deadheading or pulling weeds.

A larger rug will work fine so long as there is no corner of it in front of a doorway, and no edge bleeding into the natural path. People don't have any trouble stepping on and off the sides of a rug while moving through a space, but it throws off the scheme and confuses the walker to have to walk half on and half off the rug, or to choose to shift off the middle of the natural path to walk either on or off it. I'm not a fan of white walls with brown furniture in traditionally scaled rooms. I think it makes enlivening the scheme and balancing the colors much harder, and looks too much like an apartment, unless there is major architectural drama in the space.

I agree with other posters who made the important distinction between a performance versus an activity. A school carnival is the equivalent of going to a movie or the mall, and even though the parent whose day it isn't would like to go, they are barging in on the other parent's time with the kid! That said...this is a "do as I say and not as I do" thing for our house, because even though my ex and I always divided things up like that, BM would have none of that, and we gave in. It is such a relief to have both SDs out of high school so there are fewer of those events where it was her, DH and me hanging around, sometimes all day, with the SDs, or even in events where the kids didn't really stay with the parents. And she wanted it that way on her time, too. She would always call DH to invite him to church events or things at her golf club, places we weren't even involved with. He would always say no; eventually she figured out that if she invited both of us, we were more likely to come. Which was true, but we really didn't want to do those things with her, where the three of us (or sometimes her DH too) had to socialize for long periods of time. The funny thing is, in desperation DH and I tried a tactic where I would go without him if it was something on our time and DH couldn't go. At first BM was mad (she chewed him out once in front of the girls) but then it seemed fine with her--DH called me her "new best friend." It was just so uncomfortable and I am so happy it is pretty much over. I feel like a newlywed.

In 1998 DH had a really good-paying job for that time (actually even for now) & a pretty big 401k for someone not yet 30 years old. I had a pretty good job & fair balance in my 401k. We also had a house payment & one car payment. Then DH decided he wanted to leave the security of his job & start his own business. I didn't want to do that, but that was his dream. I worried that if I refuse to even try that he'd always resent it. So he left to start the business, which actually went very well at first. We weren't as prepared as we should have been with savings in the bank, etc. But we needed to make a fairly quick decision due to a large project that we would lose if we spent too much time considering. Then he decided that he should start another related business. I worried that the time he would have to put into the startup would take him away from our main business, but he was sure it would be okay. Several months before DH left his job, we found that my mom's cancer had spread again. She was given only months to live. DH left his job in Aug, my mom died in Feb, & I was laid off from my job in April. That's a lot of major life events in a short time. For quite a while, my life involved working full-time, helping my parents at night & on weekends & doing the accounting for DH's businesses when I had time. I admit that I was distracted by the demands of working full-time & helping care for my mom. My dad was very difficult to deal with during this time. He was having a hard time accepting that mom was going to be gone & he was very angry & demanding. This made my life even more stressful. After I was laid off, we decided that I would work with DH managing the office & doing the accounting. So I sat down one day & really began looking at the bills. I knew we had been charging a lot on our credit cards. DH's original business, which had done well at first, was indeed suffering because he was spending too much time getting the other business started. He was putting off projects & the cash flow had really decreased. We were more deeply in debt than I had imagined. Things began to turn around some, but we were unable to make any progress on our debt. I kept the bills paid & made sure that our credit rating wasn't affected, but I was paying minimum payments on most things. We eventually ended up forfeiting his 401k to help pay some of our debt. Even so, we still had problems because business had dropped off. I sank into a very deep depression & was suicidal. Those were really dark times. My doctor believed that it was just too much happening too close together. He felt that I might have been able to handle things better had they not all happened one right after another. I did go on medication & it helped a great deal. I finally got up the courage to ask my dad for a loan. I was raised to be very private about finances & to not get into debt except for something major like a house or a car. It took a lot for me to admit to my dad that we had so much debt. After I explained the situation, he had one question, "Why didn't you come to me sooner?" He wasn't happy that we had gotten in so deep, but he was more than willing to help. He told me to get him a list of everything we owed & bring it to him. We then went to the bank, where he used one of his CD's to secure our debt. Consolidating it into one monthly payment with a much lower interest rate made it so much easier to deal with. DH went back to work with his old company soon after. We closed one business & sold the other to a competitor. I learned a lot from those bad times. One thing is that I make sure to pay close attention to our finances regardless of how busy or distracted I am. The other is not to let my pride get in the way. My dad would have helped us much earlier if I'd just swallowed my pride & asked, instead of pretending that everything was fine. I also learned that depression is an illness & not something that you can control. I used to think that there was no such thing as real depression & that people were just weak because they gave in instead of forcing themselves to be happy. I now know the truth about depression.

Actually, Jeeves wakes me up every morning. DD gave me an alarm clock for Christmas that begins "ringing" with birdsong, then a discreet cough and Jeeves saying something amusing. It is really Stephen Fry's voice, and there are 180 days worth of different things. This morning, the Editor of some famous newspaper (I was ASLEEP!) had called twice, wanting to know how I "got my hair that way." Jeeves, of course, told him it was a secret....but felt compelled to wake me when an offer of half a million was mentioned.
And there is also a hypnotic "counting back from ten to sleep" button....that works!

My three: Amelia Peabody, Emerson and Jane Marple-for whiskeys at sundown. Miss Marple likes her tipple.

Staying with the Wodehouse theme - how about a night out with "Catsmeat" Potter Purbright, Gussie Finknottle and Bertie Wooster, starting of course at the timeless "Drones" club ?
However, we'd need Jeeves' famous hangover cure the next morning....so that make four fictional characters, rather than three - and we'd have to be careful to avoid awaking Aunt Agatha and Sir Roderick Glossop,(the famous looney doctor) on our travels...

This morning the Prime Minister had called...twice...for advice-but Jeeves would not allow my slumbers to be disturbed.

How about a theater outing with Hamlet, Ophelia and Adam Dagleish?

Well, I am going to be the "odd" one here since my favorite period is the Middle Ages. I will opt for a "ball" at Camelot, with the legendary Guinevere, Arthur, and Launcelot....We will enjoy the ale, harp music,the Boar's Head, and the tapestries on the castle walls.

Woodnymph, you tempt me to say dinner with Merlin, Morganna, and Uther Pendragon, ultimate schemers, for a most enlightening evening of smart conversation with one or two participants dead at the end. But no, I haven't decided yet.

My first impulse was to go with my favorite dead author/gardeners ... I'd have frightfully elegant cocktails in the garden with Beverley Nichols, Richardson Wright and his wife Agnes Foster Wright (first editor of "Brides" magazine). Of course, they were real people.

But for fictional characters ...

I suppose a candlelit dinner with Ranger and Morelli might not be such a good idea ... though it's tempting!

How about a spa day with Galadriel, Arwen and Eowyn?

I'll have to give this some more thought.

Cece, I saw that alarm clock in a catalog and wanted it desperately ... now that I have a report on how wonderful it is, I'll have to drop a few hints to the DH!

I'm figuring that Dagleish could help Hamlet solve the mystery and bring Uncle to a legal justice, then Ophelia wouldn't go mad, Hamlet wouldn't go all whiny and navel-gazing, he and O would get married and rule a peaceful, prosperous Denmark. I think Dagleish is dreamy, but I am honestly too tired for a dalliance. So he can just retire with honors after all is neat and tidy.

I'd also like to smack some sense into Romeo and Juliet. Talk about leaping before you look! How about inviting R&J and Dr. Phil. Oh-he's sort of real. Never mind.

About the alarm clock-I do love it, especially the hypnotic "go to sleep" countdown...but in the interests of full disclosure I should tell you that the case is plastic.

I suppose there's a strong case for putting quite a number of Shakespearian characters into therapy, LOL. Lear and his daughters could've done with a spell on Rikki Lake somewhere prior to the third Act.

But would it make for an enjoyable social event ?

Chris, Roberta "Bobbie" Wickham pops up all over Wodehouse, sometimes unexpectedly. In "Jeeves in the Offing" she's on the brink of hooking up with "Kipper" Herring, who's a journalist, but you may be right, a clergyman may have been one of her many Beaus. I don't recall the knot ever beig tied though.....so there's still hope...?

Phil's idea of therapy for various characters from Shakespeare suggests a 'clinic' in a converted mansion somewhere in the leafy countryside.
I would 'invite' Othello, Macbeth and the various conspirators ("et tu Brute?") who did for Julius Caesar, to an anger-management course. There they would take tea and dainty sandwiches and search their inner-selves to understand what drove them to such acts of violence.
No sharp cutlery would be provided.

Depends on your definiton of "enjoyable"...Dr. Phil gets pretty good ratings in some circles!

For my true enjoyment, I would pick any of the classic detectives-the ones I mentioned before-Amelia and Emerson, or the Wimseys, the Alleyns, Miss Marple, Hercule, C.D. Sloan, Pettigrew...pour the cherry wine, whiskey and tisanes, throw out a seemingly innocent question such as "so who WAS Jack the Ripper" and sit back and listen.

can you tell I should be doing some work...but am combing the shelves for ideas for this thread instead? but this is it-for at least half an hour!

from Martha Grimes: I would choose Jury and Plant for sure, absolutely not Aunt Aggie, but I can't decide on the third so could I just drop myself into the "local" in Plant's home village and visit with the whole group?

Phil, I just finished The Code of the Woosters with the cow creamer and Bobbie getting her clergyman. No wedding, however.

I think that PG kept her unmarried in his armoury for as long as possible, for use whenever he needed to wheel out a little bit of chaos.

Is that the one where she gets them to burst hot water bottles with a darning needle ? What a gal.....

This is a fun thread! I can't decide for sure, but one character I'd definitely invite is Cadfael from Ellis Peters' chronicles. I'd pick his brains about his herb gardens, remedies and anything else I could think of.

Hmm..I could see Amelia Peabody Emerson and her husband, but I'd like Nefret, Ramses and David as well so I may have to change my mind. This is tough; there are so many characters that I like.

What a delightful day I'd have (I think) walking the Hundred Acre Wood with Pooh, Piglet and Eyore or maybe Kanga and Roo, perchance to meet Owl or Rabbit... ho hum, tiddle um...
