Nicole - it was mid-december in Madrid (Spain). Temps were down to 30-32F and the flock of these feather-balls (maybe 2-3 dozen of them) were all over the hillside.

I've never seen that kind of bird before, amazing color!

HeeHee Ron - sort of. I always thought that parrots require warm weather... ?

The birds look like Monk parakeets. Apparently they adapt very well to cool weather. We have many of them in the Dallas, Texas area and they are definitely not "native" to the area.

When I was in Buenos Aires a few years ago I took this photo of a large bird nest. It wasn't until I downloaded the photo did I notice the parrot/keet to the left. The Monk Parakeet reminded me of this photo.

Jodi, yours looks like a weaver bird. I have pictures of them when I was in Africa.

Jodi, I do believe that is a monk parakeet nest. You can see more than one entrance. Each pair has their own little apartment. They build some huge nests with a whole colony of birds living in one nest. They cause lot's of problems for the electric utilities here because they love building these nests on tall power poles and in the lighting at baseball fields and parks.

I do know it's not a Weaver Bird. The nest was about 4 ft tall and had multiple entrances. Wish I had taken several photos.
