Susan here is a chart to go by. A kg is approximately 2.2 pounds so I would think it will take about 3.5 to 4 hours. My mother always used the stick a fork in the breast and if the juice runs clear it is done. I had an aunt that always went by if the leg moved easily it was done. I cheat and always get a turkey with the pop up timer.

Mine was about that size and took 3 1/2- 4 hours. I'm not sure exactly how long but I put it in at 9.15am and we were eating it by about 1.30pm. It had bread stuffing in the main cavity and sausagemeat stuffing in the other end.

Nita-Alton Brown says the pop up timers aren't always acurate!LOL That's what I always use too but now I'm leery of them.I kinda rely on the stick a fork in the breast too.I never stuff the turkey.I always put my turkey in the oven around midnight,covered with foil,and let it cook all night.Start it at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes then turn the oven to 325 and let it cook all night.It's ready by the time I get up and the oven is free for the dressing and whatever else I have to bake for the rest of the dinner.I have cooked my turkeys this way for years.I have even put a partially frozen turkey in the oven and cooked it this way and it turned out great.Always juicy and tender.

Lilliepad, I know not to rely completely on the pop ups and still use the fork test. A couple of years ago I bought a couple of turkeys with the pop ups and they never popped. I wrote to the company and they replaced them for me free. Hey what a deal!!

Have you ever cooked a turkey that didn't have any juice in the pan? I did and you talk about scurrying around for things to make gravy with.

I now do steamed turkeys and they are wonderful. I have made 2 turkeys for Thanksgiving. One the conventional way and one steamed. You know they eat all the steamed one and we end up with the conventional one for leftovers. Now I skip the conventional one and only do steamed.

Nope, those pop up timers are not to be trusted.

I use an instant read thermometer, either one that can stay in the bird with a cable to the reader, or one that you just stick in the bird then remove.

No stuffing in a steamed turkey. Here are the directions. If you like to eat the crispy skin you won't get it with this turkey.

Steamed Turkey

1 turkey approximately 14 pounds
2 stalks celery
1 apple, cored and quartered
1 onion, peeled and quartered
butter
salt and pepper
2 quarts hot water

Heat oven to 450 degrees. Clean out turkey and put in roasting pan. Put celery, onion and apple in cavity of turkey. Baste the turkey with butter and salt and pepper him. Pour 2 quarts of water as hot as you can get from the tap around the bird. Seal the bird into the pan as tightly as possible. Place in oven and cook for 1 hour (sometimes I leave it cooking for 1 1/2 hours). Shut off the oven and donÂt open the door. Leave bird in oven without opening the door for 6 ½ to 7 hours. After that amount of time open the foil and take the meat off the bones. This turkey is so moist everyone will love it.

* The broth around the turkey can be used to make your turkey soup. I use the celery and onion in preparing my stuffing and discard the apple pieces.
