I am sorry for the lack of care your mom is getting. I wish I lived closer and I could go in and be her advocate.
I think care is fragmented more than when I worked and there is lack of continuity.
I will continue to keep your mom in my healing thoughts and prayers.

I saw a lot of that with my mom - one doctor ordering fluids, another canceling the order. Waiting for something that was supposed to happen but due to someone dropping the ball during the shift change didn't. Doctors and nurses giving completely different answers to the same question. My dad wasn't a good advocate. He heard what he wanted to hear. My sisters tried but when you can't get more than one doctor in the room at a time and the patient has several, it's difficult. I think it's frustrating for the staff and doctors too - I believe much of the way medical care is administered is outlined by the bean counters.

Not to be morbid but I had an uncle who died because he was fed a meal after having some type of surgery that he wasn't supposed to eat after having. But they came in and served him food and he didn't know better than to eat it I guess.

Just sending hugs to you and your mom. It is rough when someone does not have good communication. Here at our medical center we have Hospital doctors who take your case unless your Dr is a specialist. It seems to be working pretty good, and when I was just in, I had a regular nurse and a LPN who has so many patients. I also had 3 male nurses and a male nurse technician. at various times. They were really good.

Darn! It's frustrating. I'm going through a little of that too! It's not easy when they are so helpless.

Sounds like it's time to do some tap-dancing on someone's head!! Start at the bottom and work your way up until you speak to the person "in charge"!

I hope you can get to the bottom (or top) of this and make them understand what they're doing/not doing is not acceptable!!

Oh, don't get me started on this. I will say that I will be saying a prayer or two for your Mom and also for you.

I know how frustrating that is. You need an advocate or someone very firm to insist that all doctors are to be present for a meeting. My heart hurts for you and your Mom!

Damn! That must be so very frustrating for you. I'm so sorry. There is absolutely NO reason for that kind of lack of communication in a hospital. You and your Mom are in my prayers. I hope today is better. (((((Hugs, friend))))

I too send hugs. My late gran fell and broke her hip - they kept her on nothing but tea and water for FIVE DAYS awaiting a surgery spot. The older folk did not get priority and my Aunt did not speak up enough. My gran never fully recovered from that week. She wound up back in the hospital for other reasons and got released, sent home. No one noticed but the staff never pulled out her IV needle - my gran took it out herself at home (we did not catch that one either with her coat on!).

Don't be shy. Forget waiting hours completely when you have to advocate for someone. Just walk in like you own the place and go to her room as your base camp and then start with the head nurse for her ward. It's your Mom and you are immediate family. Always be firm and polite - if you start to get angry a good tactic is not to raise your voice.

Are you documenting all of this? Start writing a journal of everything that is questionable or wrong. Then I would be as squeaky of a wheel as possible. You won't make any friends amongst the staff, but you are fighting for your Mom. I would also take this higher up the line, to the chief of staff or ceo or whoever is in charge.

I know that at my hospital if anyone develops a bedsore, it is a HUGE DEAL. That is something that is tracked here in the USA, and hospitals are graded on things like this. I know that your health care system is different than ours, and not sure how much choice you really have. But if she was my Mom I'd get her the heck out of there if at all possible. You've already posted several things that have greatly concerned me: that she acquired a secondary infection and she needs to be isolated for, that she now has a bedsore, and that communication is severely lacking.

I'm speachless at hearing your situation with your mom. It's so sad that you're having such problems with the hospital and staff.

I can't add more than the others have said--keep speaking up for her, and fighting for her. And yes, bedsores are considered a really important thing, here, too.

Oh, there is one thing--what you've described (I'm not a dr. but have just gone through something related with my aunt) sounds like there might currently be an intestinal blockage, so until you get answers, might be a good idea to back off from trying to get her to eat. IF there's any kind of obstruction, eating is just going to cause her more problems, unfortunately.

I will keep her and you in my thoughts. Hang in there for her.

I hope she's had her scan by now so she can at least have a drink of water. I agree with sleeperblues that you should go straight to the chief of staff. I can understand a few miscommunications but not as many as you've told us about. I'd be really mad that the scan wasn't done. There just isn't any reasonable explanation for that! That really makes me sad. I hope you are able to talk to a "higher up" and find out what can be done. Hugs

I am deeply affected by your post. We went through simalar things with my Dad several years ago. At that time it was lack of staffing they were trying to keep costs down. One of our family members stayed during the days and we hired a cna to stay with him at night. I won't go into all the reasons we did this but I know just what you are going through. There's a person in every hospital who specializes in communication from doctors to nurses to patients to family members. that person is The Social Worker. He/she will listen to you, and deal with every problem you present.They can cut thru red tape like a hot knife thru butter. They deal with everything from extra long waits for tests to nutrition, to the patient's progress. Ask if your mother has been assigned a Social Worker. If not, go directly to the SW office. Use this resource-he/she is there for you!

Please, if at all possible, try to have a family member there as much as possible and don't let up on the pressure to get your mom taken care of. It was very irresponsible of them not to have had the ct scan done yesterday. I truly believe you're going to have to make a bit of a stink--sounds like there may have been a problem with her surgery that needs to be corrected asap. If this hospital can't do it, can they move her to another (and better!) one? You've just got to make some noise about this.

I've been there too. My sisters and I saw so much of this sort of thing during the 4+ years my mom was in the hospital and then in the nursing home. Not enough workers to go around. Indifference. Neglect. And we were THERE all the time. Or at least one of us was there for multiple hours each day. We wondered how it went for those poor souls who didn't have family members there at all. I do want to add that there were also good, caring, trained staff as well. But you sure do notice those who are not.
