Every year we try to get a nice photo of our family. This is this years.

What's she waiting for anyway? In my family and with most other families that I know the place, time, and menu for a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day dinner is planned weeks ahead. That is so that everyone is notified/invited and all cooks know what the game plan is and what they are to provide. Also, so the hosts can set their tables for the number coming or get in extra chairs, ice, china, etc. This meal requires a little more than just throwing some extra burgers or hot dogs on the grill like you would for a casual outdoor cookout in the summer. Even if you don't do "formal" dinners, you still need to be able to plan this meal so you are not rushed and harried. Is she subtly playing a control card with this?

The best holiday tradition here. I'm of Polish decent. Our Christmas Eve meal is a big deal. The whole family gets together and has traditional Polish Fare, three kinds of Pierogi, potato pieces boiled then sauteed in oil and onions, fish, mushrooms, peas, rice, prunes, olives, candy, wine and soft drinks followed by cookies, nut and poppyseed roll for dessert. Before the meal there is a large rectangular shaped wafer (consistency of communion wafer) everyone has a piece and those at the table break off a piece or yours and you of theirs and eats it, it's called Oplatki. I've always loved our traditional Christmas Eve better than any other Holiday tradition.

I too am having a big party on Christmas Day (now over 190) and do not cook like you all do. I have to have help. I like to have a cleaned up kitchen at all times so things move easily through to the party. Garbage and dirty dishes need to go away. My tips are: Start with an empty disihwasher and garbage cans. Have a covered tub or tubs that you can put the rinsed off dishes in that can't go in the dishwasher and keep it off to the side. Keep the dishwasher going the whole party and empty it and add. At the end of the party, if this works, you have a lot less to do. That's what I have to offer.

We were at the home of our DIL's parents in the city for their annual Vigil Dinner of Polish mushroom soup, creamed herring on black bread, pierogi's (three varieties), mashed potatoes, cabbage -- and, thankfully, salmon. We were twenty-some at table including four grandkids ages two to nine and one who is 17. Too many cookies and candies on the sweet table to list them all. Sarted at five with champagne, then the wafers, dinner, carols in English and Polish, and a mad opening of gifts. Home in bed by 10:30. DGD was in love with her play guitar and microphone, and DGS was hopping up and down over his giant new Lego set. (Guess we did OK.) DGD set up the mike on its floor stand and informed the gathering, "I'm the singer." DGS and his year-older cousin roamed the house trying out their walkie-talkies. It was a very nice "zoo".

I just read your reply on Alisande's post about your person of the year being your kids and you mentioned they are 22 and 21, so I had to come back here and look again. Holy cow!! I thought they were about 18 and 15. Let's hope those youthful looks carry on with them for many years LOL!!

John is 21 and Stephanie will be 23 in January. I hope they retain their youth too, then maybe I will look younger through osomosis!!
