What's for dinner Christmas eve 2010?

Nothing special here. We'll have tomato-basil soup and a grilled cheese. I've been in the kitchen most of the day or delivering cookie plates to neighbors. Nice to visit with them.

Sister is fixing us chicken and sausage gumbo. Just waiting on son to get off work so we can head out.

My husband's parents used to celebrate the English way, or what they thought was English (they're from Hong Kong). A full dinner at 6p on Christmas Eve, putting up the tree, opening presents at midnight, and then eating a full meal AGAIN at 2am in the morning Christmas Day! This really wasn't very enjoyable for me, and since my MIL worked it was pretty stressful for her, too, doing all that stuff! They would make roast leg of lamb (Chinese will eat meat in huge quantities if they can afford it!), shepherd's pie, several Macanese (Portugese recipes adapted from Macau cuisine) dishes, and one little lonely package of Green Giant creamed spinach for 8 people. Eventually over the years, they stopped doing these parties, due to ill health and just getting tired of all the work involved. I was secretly relieved, although my husband STILL misses opening presents on Xmas Eve, LOL! My family of third-generation Asian Americans, celebrates Christmas Day. We never have a set menu, as all of us, including my now-grown-up nephew and niece, are dynamite cooks and love to experiment. Although we do a mostly traditional Thanksgiving, Christmas is always different. Sometimes we do "theme" ethnic cooking; sometimes we do more traditional stuff. This year it's slow-roasted salmon and prime rib, because my nephew is anxious to try cooking his first Big Piece of Red Meat :)) I make a smoked salmon sushi appetizer that the family really likes, so I offered to do the hors d'oeuvres this time. My BIL is vegetarian so he'll do a Greek salad and we'll have a couple of desserts -- probably a tiramisu and a fresh strawberry tart with lemon curd filling. My sister is in charge of the starch this year, could be pretty wild as she approaches cooking as a science experiment! New Year's we celebrate individually. My sister and her family do a buffet drop-in. My husband and I usually make ourselves a nice festive brunch -- blueberry French Toast or Chocolate Pancakes, and then maybe rack of lamb or filet mignon for dinner.

I too am having a big party on Christmas Day (now over 190) and do not cook like you all do. I have to have help. I like to have a cleaned up kitchen at all times so things move easily through to the party. Garbage and dirty dishes need to go away. My tips are: Start with an empty disihwasher and garbage cans. Have a covered tub or tubs that you can put the rinsed off dishes in that can't go in the dishwasher and keep it off to the side. Keep the dishwasher going the whole party and empty it and add. At the end of the party, if this works, you have a lot less to do. That's what I have to offer.

Our 'out-laws' (DIL's parents) have a traditional Polish Christmas Vigil meal on Christmas Eve. Last night there were twenty of us at table. Champagne is served before dinner. Then there is a sharing of wafers where each person greets every other person attending, eating bits of one another's wafers. The purpose is to mend any old year's discords and wish good things for the coming year. The table is set with the best china, silver and crystal. There is straw under the white tablecloth to evoke the manger in the stable. DIL's father reads from the Bible -- and this year recounted his first nativity play, where he played the ass! Then the meal begins with homemade soup made from imported Polish mushrooms. (Evidently becoming scarce.) Salmon has been a welcome addition to dinner in recent years. The rest of the meal is varieties of pirogi and cooked cabbage. After dinner there is an enormous sweets table with homemade cakes, cookies and candy. (DGS pointed out the six kinds of cookies and the caramels he had helped his mom make. Doubly delicious!) When the children can't stand it another second, the mound presents under the tree is attacked! Towards the end of that, carols are sung in English and in Polish. DH and I drive home while some of the family goes on to mass. (DH and I are not Catholic -- which becomes more 'OK' with passing years. It's nice to visit with DIL's big, extended family.) Today is bright and sunny near Lake Michigan's shores. I see walkers, joggers, and dog walkers passing along our street already. DH and I have had our breakfast -- with the stollen I *finally* found! Happy Christmas Day, good KT friends!

I just read your reply on Alisande's post about your person of the year being your kids and you mentioned they are 22 and 21, so I had to come back here and look again. Holy cow!! I thought they were about 18 and 15. Let's hope those youthful looks carry on with them for many years LOL!!

Chilled out - freezer fare. Louisiana chicken wings, chicken veggie rolls with plum sauce, garlic bread. Changed my mind on a beer and just got a lovely cold glass of water. If I think about it tomorrow hopefully will drink more water.

Just chilling here.

Lobster tails, bacon wrapped shrimp with pepperjack cheese, scallops and shrimp; along with a salad. YUM!

went to a local place. had fish (yummy!) and potato skins. had enough for lunch tomorrow!

drove around to see some christmas lights, and now home with a big bowl of friday night popcorn, and a movie...ahhh who says a tv in the bedroom is a bad thing???lol...

We do (crud.... how do you spell it.....??) hors d'ourves for dinner. Spring rolls, breaded mozzerella, taquitos, egg rolls, samosas, meatballs in bbq sauce, and my daughter made a brocolli salad. Mini cream puffs for desert.

I used to do a big Eve with Spaghetti chips dip rolls salads jelllos etc then the big Dinner the next day

long for those old times
DS and I stopped at IHOP tonight for breakfast. Chinese was slated for tomorrow My Neighbor brought over a curly slice ham so that will be for New Years

Just my husband & me here. Having Red Flannel Hash with a poached egg on top & a cold beer.

For dessert I made a from- scratch lemon meringue pie, but used a shortbread crust rather than a traditional one---so much easier.

We'll then watch a couple of movies on Turner Classic Movies & maaybe pop some popcorn.

Sauerkraut, potatoes and sausage in the crock pot......smells good.
Tomorrow morning we will have potato pancakes, bacon and applesauce.

A hot dog I found in the freezer, wrapped in foil since..? Tasted good tho. That's about all, not counting all the cookies I made plus all the cookies and candy friends and neighbors have dropped off. Just got back from Christmas Eve service at the church, and I'm sure I'll start picking through the plates of goodies again.

Ooo, hash with poached eggs - one of my favorites. Wish I had some for my breakfast tomorrow. All by myself Christmas Day as we had the family dinner at my brother's today at noon; but I have a big slice of ham to cook tomorrow for my dinner, some dressing, sweet pot., and probably corn.

Leftovers here~~~need to make room for the food I have made and DD#2 is going to make when she gets here. We go to DD#1's house for apitizer lunch tomorrow, then prime rib dinner later :)

We had crab and corn bisque, haddock, potato and cheese pierogi, sauerkraut pierogi, green beans, rice pudding and cookies. First time I spent Christmas Eve at my sister's and it was great.

I was so tired yesterday I didn't get dressed until 7:00 p.m. We did not have our traditional Christmas Eve chowder.. Instead, I took a few meatballs out of the freezer along with some sauce, set up a table in front of the fireplace, lit some candles, put on some Christmas music, opened a bottle of wine and had spaghetti and meatballs.....it was just the two of us. Kids not coming until next week.

We had cheese fondue in front of the fire. We haven't had fondue in over a year. DH was on major diet and we didn't want the fat of the cheese or the carbs of the bread. Well, we splurged. hahahah, 2 pounds of cheese and 1 large loaf of french bread! YUMMMMM it was sooo worth it.
