What's for dinner Christmas eve 2010?

Nothing special here. We'll have tomato-basil soup and a grilled cheese. I've been in the kitchen most of the day or delivering cookie plates to neighbors. Nice to visit with them.

Sister is fixing us chicken and sausage gumbo. Just waiting on son to get off work so we can head out.

YogaLady, I probably won't make it either, but I have good intentions. I really like Pad Thai, but Harry not so much. If you have time, look at the recipes of the week. I posted a soup recipe I think you may like. Kathleen, how nice to have an evening alone. Bet you don't have many of those, so enjoy it. That salad sounds delicious. I've never tried it. Georgysmom, I hope your lobster turns out better than mine. They weren't Maine lobster tails and not very tasty. I salute your DH for helping out--I know you've been working your fanny off in the kitchen. Shirley, you sure are creative! I would've loved to share your dinner with you. Jasdip, you're having my idea of the perfect evening. I do like watching the New Year come in in foreign countries, though. Happy New Year, friend! Glenda, I haven't been to Applebee's for so long! We always loved eating there when we lived in Gainesville. They had an excellent Oriental chicken salad--but it's been years ago and don't know if they have it any longer. Nancylee, don't think I've met you before, but welcome to the KT. Chili is an excellent idea. I could eat it every cold night we have. I don't put beans in mine. Just a lot of meat and chili powder/cumin :-) Oh man, Azzalea, those ham salad sandwiches sound so yummy! Especially with the slaw. I hope it tasted as good as it sounds. Land, now I really, really want ham salad. Cheryl, if I had to get up at 4:30 there'd be no way I'd even see 9 p.m. Have fun with your neighbors and get a good night's sleep. Raven, was your Aroma cooker a Christmas gift? (Did I forget that? I do love Asti and meant to look for it when shopping today--but forgot to put it on the list--and you know how THAT goes :-( Pam, I'm sorry you missed your family Christmas and hope your mother is going to be okay. She (and you) will have some decisions to make this year, I'm sure. But as long as she can manage with help, it's a good thing.

Our 'out-laws' (DIL's parents) have a traditional Polish Christmas Vigil meal on Christmas Eve. Last night there were twenty of us at table. Champagne is served before dinner. Then there is a sharing of wafers where each person greets every other person attending, eating bits of one another's wafers. The purpose is to mend any old year's discords and wish good things for the coming year. The table is set with the best china, silver and crystal. There is straw under the white tablecloth to evoke the manger in the stable. DIL's father reads from the Bible -- and this year recounted his first nativity play, where he played the ass! Then the meal begins with homemade soup made from imported Polish mushrooms. (Evidently becoming scarce.) Salmon has been a welcome addition to dinner in recent years. The rest of the meal is varieties of pirogi and cooked cabbage. After dinner there is an enormous sweets table with homemade cakes, cookies and candy. (DGS pointed out the six kinds of cookies and the caramels he had helped his mom make. Doubly delicious!) When the children can't stand it another second, the mound presents under the tree is attacked! Towards the end of that, carols are sung in English and in Polish. DH and I drive home while some of the family goes on to mass. (DH and I are not Catholic -- which becomes more 'OK' with passing years. It's nice to visit with DIL's big, extended family.) Today is bright and sunny near Lake Michigan's shores. I see walkers, joggers, and dog walkers passing along our street already. DH and I have had our breakfast -- with the stollen I *finally* found! We were at the home of our DIL's parents in the city for their annual Vigil Dinner of Polish mushroom soup, creamed herring on black bread, pierogi's (three varieties), mashed potatoes, cabbage -- and, thankfully, salmon. We were twenty-some at table including four grandkids ages two to nine and one who is 17. Too many cookies and candies on the sweet table to list them all. Sarted at five with champagne, then the wafers, dinner, carols in English and Polish, and a mad opening of gifts. Home in bed by 10:30. DGD was in love with her play guitar and microphone, and DGS was hopping up and down over his giant new Lego set. (Guess we did OK.) DGD set up the mike on its floor stand and informed the gathering, "I'm the singer." DGS and his year-older cousin roamed the house trying out their walkie-talkies. It was a very nice "zoo".

Sirley, it's very simple. We always had it Christmas eve so I could spend Christmas Eve day preparing Christmas breakfast and dinner. Come Christmas day, we just had a long drawn out day of opening presents. First the stocking stuffers, then a break for breakfast which was a strata and fresh fruit salad. Then we would open Santa's presents and our presents for the kids. Then we would take another break. After dinner, we went into the living room and lit lots of candles, sat and relaxed and then we would open all the gifts the kids bought for everyone. So, a nice relaxing Christmas chowder and some biscuits and cookies was most welcomed Christmas Eve. At first, I would make a potato soup base several weeks ahead of time and freeze it but after awhile I began to cheat. I take a package of Bear Creek potato soup and a package of Knorr's Leek soup mix and mix them both together according to directions on the package. I sautÃÂ© some celery and onions and throw them in along with some dry sherry to taste. Then I add whatever I feel like. Those lobster claws Raven was showing would be great along with some scallops, some crab meat and some shrimp. It's really quite goodÃ¢ÂÂ¦..the more sherry the better. LOL When it's not Christmas, I will sometimes take the Bear Creek potato soup, sautÃÂ© some onions and celery and throw in some butter and clams for a New England type clam chowder. Easy and good.

Chilled out - freezer fare. Louisiana chicken wings, chicken veggie rolls with plum sauce, garlic bread. Changed my mind on a beer and just got a lovely cold glass of water. If I think about it tomorrow hopefully will drink more water.

Lobster tails, bacon wrapped shrimp with pepperjack cheese, scallops and shrimp; along with a salad. YUM!

went to a local place. had fish (yummy!) and potato skins. had enough for lunch tomorrow!

drove around to see some christmas lights, and now home with a big bowl of friday night popcorn, and a movie...ahhh who says a tv in the bedroom is a bad thing???lol...

We do (crud.... how do you spell it.....??) hors d'ourves for dinner. Spring rolls, breaded mozzerella, taquitos, egg rolls, samosas, meatballs in bbq sauce, and my daughter made a brocolli salad. Mini cream puffs for desert.

I am going to my dad's house in about 2 hours and we are having ribs. Yum! Merry Christmas everyone!

I used to do a big Eve with Spaghetti chips dip rolls salads jelllos etc then the big Dinner the next day

DS and I stopped at IHOP tonight for breakfast. Chinese was slated for tomorrow My Neighbor brought over a curly slice ham so that will be for New Years

Just my husband & me here. Having Red Flannel Hash with a poached egg on top & a cold beer.

For dessert I made a from- scratch lemon meringue pie, but used a shortbread crust rather than a traditional one---so much easier.

We'll then watch a couple of movies on Turner Classic Movies & maaybe pop some popcorn.

Sauerkraut, potatoes and sausage in the crock pot......smells good.
Tomorrow morning we will have potato pancakes, bacon and applesauce.

A hot dog I found in the freezer, wrapped in foil since..? Tasted good tho. That's about all, not counting all the cookies I made plus all the cookies and candy friends and neighbors have dropped off. Just got back from Christmas Eve service at the church, and I'm sure I'll start picking through the plates of goodies again.

Ooo, hash with poached eggs - one of my favorites. Wish I had some for my breakfast tomorrow. All by myself Christmas Day as we had the family dinner at my brother's today at noon; but I have a big slice of ham to cook tomorrow for my dinner, some dressing, sweet pot., and probably corn.

Leftovers here~~~need to make room for the food I have made and DD#2 is going to make when she gets here. We go to DD#1's house for apitizer lunch tomorrow, then prime rib dinner later :)

We had crab and corn bisque, haddock, potato and cheese pierogi, sauerkraut pierogi, green beans, rice pudding and cookies. First time I spent Christmas Eve at my sister's and it was great.

I was so tired yesterday I didn't get dressed until 7:00 p.m. We did not have our traditional Christmas Eve chowder.. Instead, I took a few meatballs out of the freezer along with some sauce, set up a table in front of the fireplace, lit some candles, put on some Christmas music, opened a bottle of wine and had spaghetti and meatballs.....it was just the two of us. Kids not coming until next week.

We had cheese fondue in front of the fire. We haven't had fondue in over a year. DH was on major diet and we didn't want the fat of the cheese or the carbs of the bread. Well, we splurged. hahahah, 2 pounds of cheese and 1 large loaf of french bread! YUMMMMM it was sooo worth it.
