It sounds like our experience with the KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker bowl! OMG good! I was making a batch every week for him, now since the kidney stone episode doc says avoid dairy. I wonder if there is a sorbet recipe for mine? LOL

We have one exactly like what Susan posted the link to. It's great. The only problem is when all or most of the kids come home there's barely enough to go around. Sometimes there's wailing and gnashing of teeth. DW wonders if we were all raised by wolves in an earlier life. We buy raw milk from a neighbor and skim the cream off for ice cream. We made a coffee flavored batch Christmas night that was super.

How convenient is that? No adding salt or ice like the one we had. I'd love one like yours. I never made a recipe that called for eggs--pretty much cream and sugar. It's really good with fresh peaches in the summertime (really ripe ones).

I just used ours to make ice cream for our family Christmas today. OHhhhhhh it is so good! I bought ours in 1996 when I was working at a housewares store. I haven't had it in the kitchen in probably 2 years....because neither of us need to be eating it! But oh my, it tasted so good with strawberries today. So easy too....mix it up and let the machine do its thing. Mmmmmmmm

LOL @ flattie! Warm dishrag. The cleanup was easy, as there wasn't much residue after I licked the paddle thingy and used the spatula to get every bit out of the mixer bowl. :-)

Falls under my evil plan to supplement the DR set. Actually, it serves 2 real purposes:

1. Gets DH out of the kitchen while we're entertaining. DH can mix drinks in the DR away from my work space

2. Gets the booze storage out of the kitchen (freeing up valuable storage space). If I have to sacrifice a shelf to an ice cream maker, it's a fair compromise.

Now, I need to know if anyone who owns one of these devices has managed to churn out a successful 1/2 batch of ice cream. Is it possible to make 1/2 gallon quantities?

My machine makes 2 quarts. I have even made 1 quart in it. For today...I made 4 quarts!

ALSO....found out the ice cream is REALLY YUMMY for using in a Mudslide freeze! LOL Just like a chocolate malt...till it kicks ya! =)

monica_pa, you say just use 1C milk and 1C cream but how much final product is produced from that two cups of liquid? A quart of ice cream? A gallon? I know a lot of air gets whipped into ice cream but I've never made it to see how it actually transforms.

I'm trying to compare costs between home made and store bought to see if there is a savings in making it yourself.

We bought a cheap knock off one at Walmart during the summer....we paid $15.00 for it and it works great. It's a 2 quart one. We have used it quite a bit....the store bought ice cream doesn't compare now that we've had homemade!

if anyone does make the egg custard type do make sure it's the cooked custard...

in the summer, try fresh peaches..the best you've ever had! we made mango once to go with our mexican dinner...

one time something went a bit wrong and low and behold had bits of butter (from the heavy cream) along with the ice cream, lol...my mil just lol'ed and asked for seconds! that was with our old electric hand-cranked model...

So, do you all use mixes or recipes, or what?

I might just need to know in advance of getting my maker, so I can be all ready to make some.

Just the two of us, so the smaller batches are better. In our book:

1 cup milk
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 or 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract

Use whisk or blender to dissolve the sugar in the milk. Stir in heavy cream and extract. Turn ice cream maker on and pour in mixture. After 20-25 minutes, you have ice cream! Another place in the book says it takes "about" 30 minutes, so it may vary by ingredients or by how cold the mixing bowl is. Book recommends keeping the mixing bowl frozen so it is ready to use.

Above recipe says it makes 10 1/2-cup servings. Like anyone is going to settle for 1/2 cup! :-)

Mine makes about 2 qts.

I have the cruisart 2-quart ice cream maker. I bought an extra bowl so that I have enough for company.

I finely crushed some candy canes and made some unbelievably good peppermint ice cream.

Hubby had me order mine from, Amazon.com for Xmas. I took the free shipping deal. Came in three days. I am one happy camper.

So not only do these ice cream makers make better ice cream it is waaaay cheaper than the gourmet stuff sold by the pint in the stores. The machine will pay for itself in no time. I'm sold.

I have made a few sorbets and the ice milk...sorbet was good, ice milk okay...if you never tasted the ice cream, it would be good.

Like Sandy said, the recipe book has other types of recipes, and I'm sure there are many more available online. Mine has recipes for fruity drinks that look low-cal, and you can use half-and-half and low fat milk and sugar substitutes! :-)

Wow, talk about *viral marketing*.......I never in my life considered getting an ice cream maker, even though I knew they existed, until I opened this post. I am dreaming of the frozen fluffy stuff; coffee flavored, real vanilla, mint with choco chips.............. I'm clearing counter space in my mine for the thing to rest between the espresso maker and the toaster..........

*Does anyone buy the 'doggy ice cream'? My uncle buys it for his dog all the time and complains about the cost. I'm thinking it could be made in one of these things for him for mere pennies. Frosty Paws Dog Ice Cream Recipe
32 oz. plain yogurt
1 mashed banana
2 T p'nut butter
2 T honey

ItÂs true dairy products arenÂt good for dogs, but yogurt contains much less lactase than regular milk and the live cultures are great for your dogÂs digestive system. This dog ice cream recipe is delicious and good for your pet!

1. Mix all these ingredients in your blender, then dump into ice cube trays, paper cups, or even a kong toy to freeze and serve.

2. If you want to go all out for your mutt you can freeze these homemade frosty paws just like you would homemade ice cream. A salt-less automatic ice cream maker makes this as easy as using any other appliance in your home and the frosty paws will be ready to serve in 10 minutes.

For the ultimate treat, appropriate for desert at a doggy birthday party, follow steps one and two, then take the mostly frozen dog ice cream product of number two and spread it 1" to 1½" thick on wax paper. Freeze for five minutes and thenremove dog ice cream from freezer. Next, use a paw shaped cookie cutter to cut a paw shaped "frosty paws", remove ice cream around edges, and return paw shapes to the freezer to freeze solid.

Time to make ice cream...20-30 minutes.

Bad news
To make ice cream, the bowl must be frozen, which takes about 24 hours in the freezer. I bought a second bowl, and keep both of them in the freezer.

We got an ice cream maker as a wedding gift 28 years ago. Use it only ocassionally becausae getting the ice crushed is a lot of work. But it makes delicious ice cream. I made tutti fruitti last sunner-peaches, bananas, cherries and pineapple. Yummy! Use organic cream, it has a high fat content.

My kids are always asking me for gift suggestions for Christmas and birthdays. I'll have to keep this in mind for the next occasion. But in the meantime I think I'll invest some money in the manufacturers of ice cream makers! After all these sales their stock should really soar!!!

Would any of you know if there's a recipe for Lemon Custard ice cream?? That may be the deciding factor for me.LOL,LOL

We have one. I think it is the Quisinart. It actually has two bowls with it. The bowls are always in the freezer, but it hasn't been used in quite a while. We can actually make both bowls at one time, or only make one bowl. One quart each, I think. If I can remember the next time I open the insulated curtain covering the sliding door to the back porch, I look and see what brand it is.
