mulled cider weather

When it gets cold, especially around the holidays, our family likes to make mulled cider. It is easy and best to make it from scratch.

Combine in a large cooking pot:

1/2 gallon of cider

One whole, washed orange studded with 15 whole cloves

3-4 sticks of cinnamon (the cinnamon bark from the spice shelf, not the candy)

Warm over low heat for about an hour. Taste it to see if the spices have combined in it. If not, give it another 15-30 minutes. Serve warm in festive mugs, with out without adding alcoholic spirits such as a tablespoon or two of brandy, or rum, or Irish whiskey. Take the spices and orange out of the cider after about a total of 2 hours or so to prevent bitterness from developing.
