Will be in the air, headed for Miami, for Saturday nite, and board the ship on Sunday and away we go to warm weather.

Anyone else beside me that will be traveling for the holidays?

Not me, only wishing I were sailing with you. Do have a fantastic trip and don't even think about us back here at the KT.

I was in my pond today. The colocasia is in my van along with a dwarf papysomething. The hibiscus, pickerel, ribbon grass were sunk to the deepest part of the pond. I am quite happy that I did the pond thing while it was still in the 70's! I hosed off several plants with a garden sprayer that had some soap in it. I think the force of the spray got a few bugs off and hopefully the smell of pepperment soap will turn a few more away. I now have lovely hanging baskets of green and purple Tradescantia inside and also a giant begonia that I am sure will soon be dropping leaves. (I hope the ceiling hook will support the weight of the plant that now hangs over our stereo! A schefflera was brought in that is now shrub size. I am wondering what to do with the huge flowering coleus. I really do not like my green and varigated spider plant-I am thinking about giving them away but I can't make myself do that. I cut the suckers out of my crab apple and some branches off of a maple tree and yesterday I cut the top off of an arbervita(sp?). So now I have a much nicer view of my back yard from my kitchen window and the sash of the window is exactly at the top of the hacked off arb-isn't that great And I burned the blighted tomato plants that I removed from my garden. This week I hope to finish pruning a hedge, bring more plants in, and rearrange my houseplants for the indoor growing season..boo hoo!

Sarah! I was thinking of you. I'm glad you're staying warm. I think it will be cloudy on groundhog day, probably another ice or sleet storm... Btw, that 59-car pile-up in the news Sunday, that was my highway exit. I am ready for the deep freeze. It was (surprise!) almost 30 degrees today, and I took the opportunity to check and reset the GFI on the three deicers, and I plugged in the bubbler. Scooped the snow from where I suspect the deicers are and found one wet spot. So I can't tell if the other two deicers or the bubbler is working. There is a ton of nicely insulating snow on the pond, and I don't want that to get wet from the bubbler either - some bubbles under the ice is good too, even if they don't surface - so I pulled that plug again after dinner. It's the back-up right now. I cleared some more ice of the back steps and trampled a path to the pond/electric outlet pole. That got quite enough snow stuck under the edge of my snowboots. That will also give Gretchen a place, other than the kitchen deck or the patio itself, to go piddles... and make poopsicles... anyway, her polar fleece vest is ready at the back door. For some reason she just doesn't want to wear the cute booties. The old wood stove is loaded up and ready to go if we want extra warmth inside. I can't think of anything else? :) Mary

Hey g, I hear ya on no outside. It's darn raw here today. Was supposed to be warm, but you can't tell it by me. I've had a number of experiences over the years, but I'll tell ya'll about the first one I remember. When I was five my grandfather died. I had wanted to go visit him just before then but my parents wouldn't let me...long story. So, when he died I wanted to go to the funeral bad. They wouldn't let me, said I was too young. I was very adamant and really threw a fit about it. I didnt' get to go. Shortly thereafter, one night I was in bed. A storm was coming, something woke me up and I saw a figure of a man at the window putting the window down. I knew it was him. Right after that my mother came in to shut the window and was surprised it was already shut since I was too small to do it. I told her Grandpop had did it. That summer several times he came and shut the window before a storm. After that my mother wasn't surprised when she came in and it was already done. About ten years ago my father died. I live in the house where I grew up. Had moved back here to help him a few years before he died. Sometime in the first year after he died, I was at the computer in the living room with my back to the hallway. All of a sudden I heard his loud.. Hey.. It was how he always greeted us. My mother died before him and that was about the same time I kept feeling her around when I'd talk about her. Smiles. Guess he wanted to make himself known too. My mother and I learned when I first moved away from home that we could do the mental messages to each other. If one wanted the other to call, we'd just think of it and they would get the message. Then I started doing it with my aunt and later my best friend and I would do it. Still do it with my aunt and best friend. Friend lives across country and we don't talk often, unless one of us sends 'the message'. To this day I always can tell when my mother is around because we smell the cigarette smoke. No one has smoked in this house in twenty years at least.

If your African violets take too much of your time, then you are giving them way too much attention. Honestly, I barely acknowledge mine and they are gorgeous year round. I think too many people want African violets to seem like they need special care. They don't. I have dropped, crushed, over-watered, under-watered, drenched in hot sunlight, left in the dark, and failed to re-pot my African violets for years at a time. They still reward me with blooms whether or not I deserve it. I have heat intolerance from multiple sclerosis, so I keep my apartment cool (most would say COLD) year round. I drop everything, including the African violets. I might take the dust off their leaves once a year. In the winter I hardly ever turn on the heat, so it's normally at 45-55 degrees; I tell people I keep it warm enough in the winter so the African violets don't freeze. In the summer the temperature cannot go higher than 70 degrees or lose my right leg, right hand and most of my cognitive abilities; at times the air conditioner has the apartment down to 60 degrees all day. I don't provide them with any special lighting. I water them when I am physically able to lift the jug. I always add food to the water, because with my short-term memory loss can never worry about a feeding schedule. I have mine in pots with holes in the bottom sitting on top of a tray of aquarium stones. If the stones look dry, I water the stones. My African violets LOVE living here! They have healthy foliage and gorgeous flowers. In the wild, no one fusses over them. They get gnawed on and stepped on. African violets acclimate very well to many different conditions. They survived before people came along to take care of them. It's a shame to get rid of plants you have cared for. Just stick them somewhere and forget about them. If they look like they are wilted, water them.

Well, at least I won't miss the ship this time, in case plane develops mechanical problems, like last year. I'm spending the night at the Hilton!

we're driving down to miami tomorrow to board royal caribbean to bahamas & keys on monday night for 5 days. i did get a hotel overnight just incase there are problems :-) i'm pretty disappointed in the weather actually, i was hoping for much warmer weather in the 80's for the bahamas but mid 70's is the normal, same as our own weather :-( GF just spent a week in bahamas and the water was too cold to her to scuba, her new DH did thou and got sick, temps then were like orlando upper 60's low 70's. atleast it is a vacation & break, our first cruise too :-0 ~ liz

Liz, have a wonderful first cruise!
I went to the Bahamas for Christmas, and cold front hit as we got there. Couldn't sit out on the deck cause of rain and winds. DS couldn't scub dive either.

Hope the weather clears up for you.

I'll be in St Thomas VI Christmas Eve and weather is looking 80's day-70's nite.

Hoping Ginger and I can meet for tea. Gotta reply to her email and see if we are still meeting.

Have a fun trip Glenderama. I am not leaving home. As usual, DS is coming here to play in the snow and freeze his buns off. He will be here 3 weeks. He will do some painting for me and, hopefully, do some painting for others to make some $$. The painting business has been slow in CA.

I am not traveling for the holidays but my youngest is coming home from CA with her finace'
on December 23 and they will be here until January 7! This is the first time she has been home
for Christmas in 4 years.
Again, Glenda have a wonderful time.

We are flying to Florida on Saturday to spend Christmas with my folks. Haven't had Christmas with them in 20 years. They live in Naples so I hope to have some warm temps and be able to walk the beach. I know the water will be too cold.

No pictures!

Said we could have tea at the Buddha tea place OR funny frozen drinks at Yacht Haven Grande and we can look at all the rich people's yachts. Yea!

But I'll have pictures of my trip! Just not Ginger.

Glenda, I am leaving the day after Christmas for a cruise from Tampa to the Caribbean. I am also a widow and will be traveling with 5 friends. I am looking forward to it but it has been stressful because it is such a busy time of the year. I am planning on taking the time to relax and spend lots of time on the deck reading. Hope you have a wonderful trip. Satine
