Mexican Train Domino Game

Anyone play it? We have been playing it for years. Everyone we introduce to it loves it. My husbands family gathers on New years day and they are wanting to have a domino tournament. Do any of you who play this game know how to make it into a tournament? I know we will need to use several sets of dominos. Several family members have sets so that is no problem. Any ideas? This is a big family like around 15 or more will be playing.

Do you mean 15 playing at one time? I can't imagine. I've never played w/ more than 4, but I think you could have teams and let the winner from one game play the winner of another game. We played Friday night.

We have a double 12 set and a Mexican Train game to go with it...but we haven't ever taken the time to figure out how to play it.

I'm not a person who can read it and understand it.

I sooo much quicker just playing it with someone who knows how.

I just found online Mexican Train the other day. All I've seen has been Flash games, but if I see a different kind I'll let you know, Sheila. You might even try different websites, because it can be a bit different. I learned to play with a group of people about 4 yrs ago & sometimes we'd even have enough for 2 tables of players. They were a bit "intense", but it was fun. Playing online has let me figure out different strategies when I set up my Train that I didn't realize when I played with "real people". But of course they would never have allowed me to "tinker" the way I do with the online game. They liked to play FAST!

It's a form of Canasta. You need a certain number of points in cards to get on the table. All cards have a point value. For example you can't lay down less then a total of 50 points to start. That is pretty easy. But we play in rounds and by the 4th or 5th round you need 150/190 points to get in the game. So at that point we deal 13 cards instead of the usual 11. At the start each player takes cards off the stack and deals out two hands of 11 cards each, one for themselves and one for the person on their left. You tell the person on the left whether the cards you gave them are their hand or their foot. They cannot look at their foot until all of their hand is depleted.

I liked to play it (on my computer? maybe, before it died) on the computer at the library, but it was frustrating on the phone, for in portrait mode the last car position (or two? one, I think) was out of sight on the right, and in landscape mode, one line of trains was missing! Yes we always have lots of fun playing it too Glenda. Patti, I wish I could teach you how, I learn better by just playing too. It is fairly easy once you catch on.
We have played with up to at least 8 players before. We have a set of double 12's and also a set of double 15's (witch I don't care to use, too many numbers to add).
If we do a tournament we were thinking that we would have several tables with a set of dominoes at each table and we would somehow rotate after each round. We just aren't sure how it would work. I thought maybe some one here might have done it before.
