no changes here but I use firefox with ad block plus and the easylists subscriptions so rarely see any of the extra junk.

Sorry for your GW posting woes OJ, and sure hope you don't go elsewhere to talk. I'm happy to see you posted this today, as I read that you (your area) got quite a bit of the white stuff recently.

Well I just saw and read your reply on the London Ontario Snowfall thread...pleeze be careful. My dad always told me to stay home whenever it was bad out, if it wasn't an absolute necessity to go out. I now know that he was so right.

GW is really having some issues...everyone's email link was gone a couple of days ago, and Member Page info has disappeared, but has returned for 'some' members and not others...sigh.

I'm having the same problems OJ!! I also have a problem with the wording of ads(just the words...no background or pictures) coming in over the printed word of the forum. It is truly irritating!!

It's a glitch in the machine. :0) They're not doing it on purpose. I tried posting to the Ba Ba Wa Wa thread and it's impossible......at the moment....until they fix the problem....

I have been reading here for about ten minutes, but couldn't log in until now. I am on my new laptop, but don't have any software installed, except for anti-virus that came with it. I still have the ads at the side of the page, and the flashing is driving my vision nuts. I emailed ivillage last night about this but haven't heard anything.

tami_ohio, you really shouldn't be on the internet until you get the new unit secured a bit. Unless you're using Opera, and even if you are, you should install and update SpywareBlaster. Install a firewall (I like Comodo) secure IE and the other misc things otherwise you're inviting a lot of trouble. An unsecured computer on the net is like leaving your home unlocked. Easy access to those who would do you ill.

Don't worry Joyful, there's some snow heading toward Phyllis! I'll also be getting some of the snow you didn't claim. For the popup issues, use Opera with content blocker, Firefox or Chrome with AdBlock or even get a popup blocker for the Internet Elephant. Are you running a malware check on occasion? They're not always caused by the website. Sometimes it's malware.

Chemocurl, it would sure help everyone if they followed the stay home unless necessary advice wouldn't it? Less traffic. Less pollution. Less expense to drivers not driving and possibly even a savings to the ones driving since they might get better mileage. We have some snow moving in tomorrow so I'll try to get my work done early and get home before the Joyful flakes start falling!

Jaybird, that sounds like it could be the intellitxt advertising. You can block it with a good browser and/or opt out of it with iVillage.

there has been red update info on the first pages up at the top telling about the problems that are happening on GW, some people keep that area collapsed so do not see it.

tami if it is a new laptop and has windows 7 on it go into the security center and make sure the included windows firewall is turned on, some come with it turned off, make sure you have it set to on. It is a good firewall on windows 7. The other program I always recommend everyone use is malwarebytes which is free, it will take care of the infections that your antivirus program misses, just be sure you update it before running the full scan and do that once a week or so.

I also recommend spywareblaster which is free too, no scans to do with it, just update it weekly then hit the enable all protection so the shield is green and it helps protect you while surfing.

Make sure you watch out for when the version of the Antivirus that came on the pc expires it is not usually a very long free trial.

to stop all those ads and banners you would need to get firefox browser and add the extension ad block plus with the easylist subscriptions. If you need info on that just ask or come over to the computer help area here on GW and we can help you. It is always a good idea to have at least one additional browser in addition to IE in case IE failed you would still have access to get online.

making sure your laptop has all the needed updates is essential, not just the windows updates which are a must but also updates for Java, adobe, flash etc. to check what is needed you can run the secunia tool which will help you make sure you have everything updated.

Gotta disagree with ravencajun on this one. Firefox is not the only browser to stop all those ads and banners. Opera and Chrome will both and K-meleon is pretty effective too using different methods.

When it comes to malware, I don't put all my eggs in one basket. I use several different programs. Much is personal preference but I prefer Spybot to Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes is good, no doubt but I also like aò, Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware and there's other good products out there, many of which are free. I do like free. :)

Thanks cynic and ravencajun. It came with Norton, and it is activated and updated. That is what I have on the old laptop, also, with another 9 months on it! I'll get to the others as soon as possible. I am on the old one using a seperate monitor right now. At least I have everything on this one backed up, except for my favorites, which I have to figure out yet. As soon as I get some time, I have to download my scanner, printer, and family tree maker. I'll be watching for Norton's trial to expire and get the other one installed before it does. I may be asking for some help on it! I'm getting funny symbols in some of the posts, like in cynic's post just above this one. I don't know if you can see it or not. And over in the cooking forum, it's the same thing in some of the recipes. Very confusing there!
