Food Network & Cooking Channel

I don't get the Cooking channel, but I was at their website and see that a lot of the chefs from Food Network are on the Cooking Channel. Are the two networks owned by the same company or have some FN stars moved to the cooking channel? Is the cooking channel basically the same thing? I'd have to pay an extra $15.00 a month to get that tier of channels and I'm not thinking it would be worth it. Just curious what I'm missing.

Cooking Channel is indeed an offshoot of the Food Network. FN hasn't had a lot of everyday-type cooking shows for a while, but lots of the competition shows instead. I haven't watched Cooking, but I can imagine that I'd prefer that to the silly shows on FN now.

I so enjoy lots and losts of Food Network shows.

Really into the The Next Iron Chef competition, right now. Have Food Network stars competing for the spot.

Ina Garten, who I love, were reruns. She doesn't have anything new going right now. I've seen them all, I think.

CHOPPED is a really good one to catch.

Donn, when I was up in Toronto a few months ago they were advertising a new Canadian cooking show. It was guys who would invent different contraptions to cook foods in different ways. I'd love to see it down here. That and Ham on the Street and I'd be set! Ham is a great show!! GGG

I happened on this site and enjoyed reading the comments about the direction of the food network. I too used to be a real fan of the network, but do not watch it on a regular basis. I chalked it up to m y life getting busier and TiVO, but that knew those weren't the only reasons b/c when I catch Julia or Jaques or Lidia on TV, I find myself sitting there and watching. Can't say that about the shows on the FN. I do like Giada, Ina (think b/c onf the calming nature of their shows, Giada's style and the fact that I actually do learn something and have tried and like their recipes). I also like Nigella b/c of the naughtly, yet subltle "not obvious" sensual way she has with preparing food. These 3 are my fav's b/c I actually learn something and have tried their recipes. I even like ole' martha b/c of the same reason. I am a black woman who grew up in a fairyly "boustrius" family in the bronx during the 60's and 70's. I and my family used to LOVE watching Julia Child (I commonly referred to her as "the cooking lady") on the "ups" channel 13 in NY, on a black and white t.v., grainy picture and all. How is it that "the cooking lady" could command the attention of my family and I is beyond me, but I think it had to do with her voice, precesne and the fact that we actually LEARNED something. Juslia also had a dry sense of humor and thought nothing of bringing out a blow torch, goggles and all, in a couple of the earlier episodes. I thankfully have most of her videos and watch them as my life permits. I am glad FN is reconizing the need for diversity, but the Neely's, sorry to say, are not the answer. I confess tat I only watch the episodes that feature one or more Neely men. Gina's over the top, swinging of the fake hair, need for attention attitude/behavior and screechy/baby voice drives me nuts. I don't need a FN "personality" telling me how/what to do w/my man in the kitchen...I have that covered just fine, thank you. PLEASE FOOD NETWORK, if you are reading this, LET THE NEELY MEN HAVE THEIR OWN SHOW WITH OUT GINA NEELY!!! P.S. Thanks to the "Eric08" that forwarded the link to the Tony Bourdain commentary. It cracked my up. Tony is another of my favorite chefs. Unapologetically real.

As someone who doesn't like design shows, I'm really looking forward to a new cooking channel! I can't tolerte most of the cooks on The Food Channel. I don't like how they use film for the shows instead of tapes, it makes a big difference. Paula Deen's show uses tape, the others are film, I think. The Bark hotdog sounds like fun...coming from a hotdog girl! Just no low talkers like the Contessa or whatever her name is. lol

Microwaves are for Cooking, with Donovan Jon Fandre. That show was on at the time microwaves were becoming popular and he had a good show to encourage people to be less afraid of microwaves. He'd deliberately leave a metal mixing spoon in the bowl to prove that metal in a microwave is not such a big deal. I enjoyed the show and learned a few tricks. Favorite show was Justin Wilson. Not so much that I'd do his recipes, but he showed that cooking is cooking, and don't get hung up on recipes. A little too much of this, too little of that isn't the crisis that some believe. Nathalie Dupree was a favorite. Her thing seemed to be to tip the bowl of whipped cream over her head to prove it was thick enough. I watched Galloping Gourmet but never was too thrilled about him or his show. It got old that he couldn't go 5 minutes without some comment about Treena. Liked the Frugal Pervert, er, Gourmet because of the history he'd bring up during the shows. Again, showing that measurements are less critical than many think. There was show, I think it was called Lavonne's Kitchen? Thin, younger black woman who demonstrated a lot of home cooking/family recipes. Haven't seen that for years. Also Franco Palumbo's show was interesting and informative. 2 Fat Ladies was a riot, though few of their recipes would I ever try. Can't stand the 4timeFelon and the Belle of the Bigots so I avoid them like the proverbial plague. I do like Cook's Country/ATK and Kevin Belton's show. ] I had recorded virtually every Cooking Cajun and Outdoor Cooking with Inside Help show and made the mistake of loaning the tapes to a friend. Tapes have never been seen since. :( And the shows aren't broadcast around here anymore. I did get a lot of his recipes downloaded right before and right after he died. He used to post them but after he died they pulled them off the site and won't give them out anymore. But he got me using and appreciating Louisiana Hot Sauce, and a pinch of cayenne. And after putting black pepper and parmesan on garlic bread, it's the only way I make it anymore, though I add Italian seasoning too.

Cooking Channel reruns many of the shows that first played on The Food Network. that may be why you are seeing the names of the same chefs on both.

I'll admit that we are avidly following the Next Iron Chef (Go Alex! after our fav Anne was ousted), and we watch Iron Chef and Chopped and Restaurant/Dinner Impossible. But I miss the prime time Emeril. And Alton's retiring Good Eats. I just can't get into cake and cupcake decorating that much.

LOL Sushipup. I hear you!!

I miss the Food Networks of old. I liked watching cooking techniques and how-to's. None of the competitions interest me. The only one that did, we used to watch on Sundays at 3 was Mission Impossible with Robert Irving. That was the only competition type show.

I like Ina, she's my favourite, and also like Tyler Florence, but don't see him anymore. They re-run a Canadian Chef....Michael at Home over and over, several times a day. Canadian Food Network is so cheap, they won't spend any money and get decent/current chef shows IMO.

Glenda and Jasdip: I want Ina's house and location, including all the little shops she goes to. OK, I will settle for her kitchen. I also cannot get into all the cupcake and decorating stuff.

I LOVE Chopped as well, Glenda! It just fascinates me! I would love to see an episode live. Some of those ingredients just floor me.

We haven't had a chance to watch Next Iron Chef, do you know when the final is scheduled? They usually show the whole series that day.

I wish we got the Cooking Channel!!

I LOVE CHOPPED & Ina & Good Eats! I really like how Alton Brown explains everything - I think it is very interesting.

Pam_25f....me too! I love her kitchen. I think her show is the best-lit show on tv. So bright and inviting.

DH wants to be Jeffrey! He aspires to be spoiled like Ina spoils Jeffrey. LOL

On Next Iron Chef, they will be eliminating TWO this coming Sunday, so I expect the finale is on the following Sunday.
