Need help from Clever People!

We're having a team lunch on Thursday, and swapping gifts (random swap, drawing a # to get a gift so you don't know specifically who will receive your gift). I need help on a clever gift for $10 that can be used by either male or female.

I'm staying away from a food item, because we have different dietary issues on this team ... so do you have any clever suggestions for me?

If you live near a Crate and Barrel they have a lot of gifts for $10 and under on their website. The only thing I can think of is 10 $1 scratch off tickets in a Dollar Store container of some sort or a coffee mug filled with ?? That isn't creative, but C&B had some really pretty holiday mugs.

Re the link: I agree with the first person, who said that if more than one person is going up or down, it will be pure cacophony. Not fun. And re escalators/people-movers-it's not just visible physical climbing issues, it's also for folks like me who don't 'look sick' but have something systemic, e.g. fibromyalgia...it's wonderful to be able to take a rest when you need to, and to have the stair-climbing challenge portion of the day precluded. Sometimes I feel great, and use the stairs to accelerate my climbing; other times, I'm so d*** thankful for the stairs to give me a break from a day of walking/schlepping stuff. My experience re protocol is like les's -- slow traffic on the right, pass on the left : )

Rosemary..I had to smile when I read your post. I was a cook for 46 years-had 2 of my own places, as did my mom & worked in many area eateries. Old River Rice is the ONLY rice we'd use for our rice pudding-can't tell you how many gallons I've made of it over the years. Old River is a company that hails from the south US-but when I lived in FL the past14 years-you couldn't find it anywhere. I'd 'stock up' each summer here in PA at my local grocery store & take it back to FL. Never had it w/cherries but a restaurant in NYC featured a large pork chop with Plum sauce over rice..it was delish! Your hubs will be surprised, I'm sure.

I don't heat my liquids at all. I always have good results. I never use extra gluten or special yeast. I buy my yeast in bulk at my local health food store, and normally I use a tablespoon of yeast for a two pound loaf. I keep my yeast in the refrigerator, or, if I have bought a really large bag of it, I will keep most of it in the freezer. If you're using whole wheat flour, add a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice. You won't taste it and it helps the rise. If the recipe calls for white flour AND whole wheat, always make the white flour be bread flour. If I don't use bread flour, I add about half a cup of mashed potatoes (or 1/4 cup of instant mashed potato flakes) into the mixture. The problem might be your recipe, might be calling for too much or too little fat and sugar. If you have a failure with a recipe, try a different one next time. Barnmom, it looks like you might've had a little too much liquid. If I'm trying a new recipe I will watch it while the machine kneads the dough. If the dough does not form up into a nice ball during the kneading process, cleaning the sides and bottom of the can, then it will rise up nicely but fall during baking. Hope this helps! --Ilene

I had a space in my old kitchen that used to house a garbage disposal and when I took it out I ended up not filling it for some odd reason (can't remember). I ended up putting in a small metal rolling card with a handle on the end. When I was working in the small galley kitchen, I could slide it out and access bowl and things, and then just slide it back in. With the toddler...she could do the same thing, but use a fabric on velcro to cover the spot from prying eyes. (My 2 year old normally won't dig that hard). Or (as I do) keep things that are accessable in plastic containers on that cart). Or she could perhaps just find a door that matches the space size? Paint/finish to match the existing and then build rough shelfs in there (slip of 1x1 down each side and back and slide in a precut shelf). She could also do the shelfs as well and just do the fabric cover verses the door.

As far as I'm concerned, nobody needs another mug! Every year I get new ones. People know I love coffee, doesn't it dawn on them I must already own a suitable mug?

When you can come up with nothing to give, a Walmart gift card is always the right color - spendable - let the recipient buy a gift they will love!

Toys 'R Us had some board games for $4.99 after $3 rebate yesterday.

I saw someone bring toilet paper to a present swap one time. That gift was fought over.

A nice snowman decoration or ornament would look good at just about anyone's house.

I was shopping at maybe Target the other day. I saw some slippers that were the old sock monkey faces. I think if people have a sense of humor, it doesn't necessarily have to fit.

Maybe you do something like Christmas cheer in a box. Put together a bright red or green boa or scarf, a hat you've decorated to be fun and the loudest Christmas socks you can find.

There are tons of Christmas CD's this time of year. You could pick an oldie or something more modern.

Is there something grown or made locally that would be a nice treat?

Bookstores have tons of inexpensive gifts that would be fun to browse and pick thru. A booklight would be useful to a lot of people. I love getting new, pretty mugs and I love flashlights and multi-tools, too. A box of pretty notecards. A small journal. Fancy bookmarks. A change purse. Gosh, I could probably find so many that I wouldn't be able to decide! All else fails- a gift card to the bookstore. Or a new calendar. :)

I kind of agree on nixing the mugs and scented candles.

How about a card of postage stamps - the Holiday pine branch "forevers". Everybody uses stamps. Not particularly funny or clever; just worthwhile having on hand. And in opposition to a bunch of stuff that isn't terribly memorable. To make up the small price difference, you could include a couple of Bic ballpoint pens. I love having those all over the house so I can always find one.

Daytimer and pen; handheld Soduku, memory stick (I just bought a 16 gig for $9.99 on sale). I'll write more as I think of them.

A coin jar that counts the coins as you put them in.

An emergency kit for the car (if you can find one of those emergency jump things that connect to the lighter port and you don't need to connect to another car, they are handy to have with you, especially in cold weather).

Something nostalgic...Peanuts christmas items always go over well around here.

Christmas service items (platters, chip and dip sets, that sort of thing) or a nice snow globe type decoration.

A re-useable covered glass with straw (looks like a fast food cup but is glass or non-bpa plastic and intended for long time use). Nice for cold drinks instead of the usual insulated cup. Pair this with a set of bamboo utensils and some cloth napkins, and you have a cool eco lunch set.

I am the tree-hugger so I like to give "green" gifts. Bamboo fabric dish cloths, re-useable muslin tea bags, a 'gold' re-useable coffee filter or small glass single size french press (which can be used with loose leaf tea as well). That sort of thing.
