The biggest paperback book cover EVER.! Couple of photos....

Want to see what I made? I made a cover for our new Atlas. Our old one is so beat up and wrinkled and disgusting looking, I thought "how can I protect this $6 investment?" lol With a $20 cover, that's how! Dumb, I know, but fun!

I saw this fabric and had to have it. I searched far and wide and finally found a lady in the UK who would sell me a half-yard of it for a price and another lady in FL who made a little profit off it, too. See, it was discontinued, but I LOVE it and I was determined to get some. It's so fun, and since I'm going on a little road trip with some girlfriends soon, it seemed so perfect and I thought I would make a wallet for our pooled money and a cover for the atlas. Boy, did that use up a lot of fabric! Waaaay more than a regular paperback, that's for sure! But I had fun making it all.

I hadn't made a book cover in so long, I had to get an old one out to see how to make it!

You likey? It's happy fabric, isn't it?

That fabric is perfect! And yes, very happy.

When I read the title of your post I figured you'd devised something to disguise a sexy book you were reading. :-)

biggest success? biggest failure? and plans for next year...

I don't even know where to begin because the PJIC-itis set in so bad this year that I am STILL trying to pot stuff up. LOL With all of the stuff out there, I would say my biggest success was trying a goldflame honeysuckle for the first time, and not only having it bloom all summer with each segment of new growth (there is a bloom out there right now), but having it actually ATTRACT a hummingbird. And we're talking about up on the 18th floor. I haven't seen the hummer in weeks though and I was never quick enough to get the camera out to get a pic of it, but for that week or so when it apparently found my spot was just unbelieveable. I still haven't recovered and have all sorts of plans for next year for any hummers who are interested. I have already grown natural attractants for years out there (weigelas, etc), mainly because I liked those plants. But the honeysuckle hit pay dirt!! Here's what the blooms look like: The parts of the vine that had grown to the ceiling and bloomed are what the hummer apparently spotted from who knows where. LOL The other pat on the back success was getting my Sarah Bernhardt peony bought last year, to bloom this year in a container. Of course, as we container gardeners are often told - it's "impossible" and other nonsense. But my little plant (that had 3 buds last year that never opened while still in the original pot) sprouted this spring and produced 5 big blooms after living in its new home: A closeup of the first flower: I didn't have a peony hoop when I needed it. LOL But I have one now for next year. As for disasters, I would say bugs and powdery mildew. Usually I get swamped by aphids but was ready for them early on with some ladybugs that one of my sisters ordered and gave some to me. But aside from not seeing any early aphids this year (nor did I see ants this year - even on my peonies), it was the whiteflies on my tomato plants (first time in my life) and the spider mites on them and on my beautyberry (been there done that with mites but this year was the worst I've ever seen), and of late, mealey bugs - on one hoya and on a gardenia (ARRRGGGG!!). Yeah, I would say the bugs were disasterous this year. Interesting that the spiders were more numerous and I have 2 biggies at each end of the balcony who have spun enormous webs between shrubs and the balcony ceiling and they are cleaning up on the "food gathering" (literally...lol). And with the PM - gosh, the poor honeysuckle, my peony, and crape myrtle bore the brunt by late summer. The whole peony is now frosty white and the honeysuckle had pretty much defoliated, but is putting out new leaves continually and with those new vinelettes come a flower! I sprayed all sorts of different PM remedies on all of them but just couldn't keep up with it because of the bizarre weather this year. I mean, the temps were very mild as opposed to frying as they can usually get, but the humidity and lack of breezes every once in awhile just made it perfect for PM. Well, back to planning in what to pot the recent acquisitions and figuring out where to put them. LOL

I have to respectfully disagree with the analogy of a book group discussion and someone asking for advice IRL. Book clubs are meant to encourage lively debate. If a friend showed me a picture IRL and said "I love this look - how would you go about creating it?" I would not give my opinion on the idea - she told me she loved it - what purpose does it serve for me to tell her I think it makes it look like she isn't a reader or that it looks contrived? I think it is far easier for people to voice opinions and disregard feelings when a question is posed online. THe OP expressed her own love for a certain look and a few other posters felt compelled to tell her the reasons it was a bad idea - why? I think it is unkind and unnecessary and represents a lack of concern for other people's POV. I often do things that are outside the box so I am used to people at least raising their eyebrows a bit at my choices at times - but I could care less. It just seemed obvious in the response from the OP that she was influenced by other people's opinions about her taste and it made her question herself. That bothered me.

Glenda-- why do you have to print out the photos? These are digital photobooks in which you upload the photos that are already on your computer into the book-publishing software that's online. Are we talking about the same kind of books? Not the scrapbooking-type books where you buy stickers and paper and put it all together yourself on the kitchen table (which is what Bulldinkie's referring to?). I've done that, for my first puppy's life. Fun, but these digital bookmaking programs give you something different. Really nice professional look. There are some inexpensive photo scanners out there that'll have all your loose pictures uploaded in no time (or photo service places will scan photos on a CD -- if you can still find an old-fashioned-type photo place nowadays! They're dying off... unfortunately). I've stuck to Shutterfly for a few books I've done (trips). Too bad that the guy who wrote the comparative analysis didn't include the version made for Apple computers (tho I understand why--not everybody has an Apple). But it's the simplest one I've ever tried. At the time, tho, there were very few layouts to choose from. I saw a friend's Apple book and it looked really nice. Some of the book-publishing software is easier to understand than others. Beyond Apple, Shutterfly is pretty simple, but I found MyPublisher (and I think Blurb, too) to be much more difficult to master (without investing too many hours!). I'm going to mess around with the Inkubook publishing site next to see what that looks like. It got some good marks from this guy's tests.

I lived in the South for many, many years. Houses there tended to get interior and exterior facelifts with some regularity. Not wholesale changes on the exterior, but perhaps a new copper-roofed porch cover, or new hardscaping, or newer, larger windows, or a mortar wash on the brick. Landscaping is well kept, lush. If someone buys a house with old, overgrown, leggy landscaping, chances are it gets torn out and new installed. There’s very much a pride in presentation in the South. Four+ years ago I moved to the Southwest. It’s entirely different here. Some of it is cultural, with old-school walled yards. Some of it is a desire to be cognizant of water scarcity. But some of it is just a different, live-and-let-live attitude. There’s just not so much keeping up with the Joneses here. I went on a local garden tour last spring. There were two small houses with lush, owner-maintained landscaping. Just wonderful. But they likely wouldn’t have made the list back in Birmingham - not awe-inspiring enough. The larger homes on larger lots really didn’t have extensive landscaping or attention paid to the exteriors. A few didn’t even seem like they belonged on a garden tour. They were nice ca 1980s/1990s homes, but hadn’t been updated at all on the exterior. But I’ll bet the kitchens and baths inside were sparkling and new.

Oh yah, that is really cute. I know what you mean about your atlas being beat up. Mine look awful too. What is that 3 item? The mainly pink one that says 'day beach'. Cute set anyway.

I LOVE the fabric and it's perfect for an atlas.

I can see why you hunted down that fabric. Very nice work, as usual!.

Funny I was reading on a craft forum that there aren't many things to make for a guy and one of the suggestions was to use manly fabric to make a holder for maps. Great idea.

Thanks, ladies! I really liked the retro look, Lyd. Very astute of you.

The pink thing is a little paper-filled journal. Those are scrapbooking stickers on the outside/inside of it and it's got room for us to make notes of the really funny things that happen along the way. It fits inside the wallet. I've also made some road-trip finger puppets for us to use, these would be great for people with little kids, too. (rofl, I am SUCH a little kid at heart). One looks like a roll of toilet paper for when a pit-stop is needed, another looks like a taco (food stop), a tall drink with a straw (which causes the need for the tp one) lol, and a bumblebee, just for fun. I'm having too much fun.

MaryAnn, I'm picking up a couple of GF's and we're headed to FL for a couple of days to stay at another friend's house. I can't wait, this has been planned for a couple of months and it's given me something to really forward to. You and Jammer should come up here! We have wineries in ArKINGsaw. ;)

You mean, you actually still had a cover on that road atlas??? LOL, mine is so old, and worn out, not only the cover is missing, but the first few inside pages as well. :)

Flamey, you are so crafty! You get a gold star from me for this project. :)

Don't you know you need a new one once in a while? LOL! We have "new roads" and "highways" you know.

I usually plan a trip off the Atlas, but get newer maps for rest stops, etc.

Flamey, I had to come back and look at the pictures again. Everything you do is so professional looking!

The journal is such a great idea. I kept a journal when we went on our ride to Yellowstone and was so glad I did.

I think my winery road trip will have to be with girlfriends, as Jammer is a Bud Lite kinda guy...no wine for him. :o)

I think that's the cutest atlas cover I've ever seen Flamey and I've seen quite a few lol.

I love the matching set very very nice ;o)

Zipper has a new flat roll up keyboard and it's a lotta weird learning to use it, maybe Flamey should make me some toys for it........it's a blue one hint hint ;o)

What a great idea and I love the retro fabric. I have some very 50's cherry fabric that I've used for some kitchen towels and I think I may have enough left over for a project like yours. Thanks for posting the picture!

Thanks, ladies, what lovely compliments from you all. I'm having a lot of fun making things.

Connie, when I'm lying in bed trying to fall sleep, I ponder new projects. It lulls me to sleep and when I wake up, I have new ideas or solutions to problems. :)

Excellent! If it were me, I'd a slapped some clear contact paper on the cover and tossed the whole boring lot back on the rear passenger seat floor. Wish I had your cleverness and ambition.
