Slow down in Canada's mail

Our postal system is once again causing havoc at Christmas. It seems that practically every year they go on strike near the Christmas season. Once again they are picketing at the big mail hubs and allowing only the occasional mail truck through(about one an hour). I'm not sure if this is happening in all of Canada but it is happening in Ontario at least in Ottawa and Mississauga. My cards are all stuck somewhere in the system. I mailed them a few days ago, before I even knew about this work slowdown. A card I mailed my sister last Monday still has not arrived and she is only an hour away from me by car.

I have received some beautiful cards from KTers so some mail is getting through. Thanks everyone. My apologies if you receive your cards late, but it is unavoidable at our end.

Good old Canada Post, gotta luv 'em! NOT! I have had a hate on for Canada Post for quite some time now, ever since they elevated the cost of mailing a parcel to the now ridiculous rates.
Did you know I can send a parcel cheaper to Zimbabwe than I can send that same parcel to somewhere in the same province I live in? Don't even ask how much it would cost me to send it to Heather in Ontario.
Canada Post is a money grubbing organization that doesn't give one iota of crap about the Canadian consumer. The alternatives like FedEx are way more expensive so they've got us over a barrel.
All of my Christmas shopping which was all bought from the US with one exception has arrived, still waiting on one parcel from the US but I'm sure it will arrive next week.
If somebody could figure out a cheaper alternative to the crooks at Canada Post I'd be on board in a flash.

I mailed a Christmas parcel to my sister in Ontario. For an 8 kg parcel (about 17 lbs) plus $300 insurance on it, it cost me $25.00. I mailed it on December 10th and they could not guarantee Christmas delivery. I was lucky that the parcel pick-up fellow hadn't left yet so I made it just in time to have my parcel go to the main post office. Canada Post works in mysterious ways its wonders to perform!

Hi folks As of March 2002 ,it's a lot easier to get plants sent to Canadian address from continental USA.The only thing you have to do to pass custom is to buy a phytosanitary certificate for your plants if you want to receive your plants by mail.I chose to drive to an American nursey down south,pick up a few plants and drove home.No phytosanitary certificate is required if the plants are with you at the time you cross the border.I have been doing this many time the most plants I took home at one time was 20 plants,the most plants allowed for each trip is 50 .If you don't believe me you could check out yourself at www.inspection.gc.ca .Have fun

What JEMDANDY suggests concerning the firewalls is a huge problem these days and unless you check for it occasionally, it sneaks up on you. Here's another possibility: I don't know if your particular anti-virus program uses Sun Belt antivirus technology. If you check your task manager and see something similar to SBAMsvc.exe then, you are using it. That particular antivirus is dynamic where it checks all opened files and incoming email for virus. Unfortunately, it is also a resource hog. I'm not saying other programs don't cause the same problems. I am just particularly familiar with this one since they provide programming for a lot of the antivirus packages out there. If another company is used, the below would still help you see if that is your problem. You probably notice the hangups when you have incoming mail with attachments, especially large ones. All the resources are being used to check the mail and even a ctrl-alt-del doesn't have an impact. It actually will but it has to wait in line for it to get it's allocation of resources to launch. Sometimes you'll see your email request time out. Of course, not having an antivirus checker for email is like walking through a mall in your underware. However, the best way to see if this is your problem is to go into your antivirus software settings and turn off email checking. Once the mail has transferred over, turn it back on. This would be AFTER you have done what JEMDANDY has suggested and still have the problem. If indeed this resolves your problem you have 2 choices....do this every time before calling for your mail or, add more memory. It's unfortunate that we have to "retool" our equipment to use a product that is supposed to be helping us protect and utilize what we have. However, with the sophistication of malware and Virus attacks, the products protecting us from them have become more and more resource dependent, to keep up. You also really need to clean out your temporary internet and cache files as well as cookies. This can do the same thing you describe if they get too large.

Many of the post offices are either being shut down, going to shorter hours, and as the post masters are taking early retirement (ours did), being replace by temp help and not getting new postmasters. Some regional centers are also getting less people which means it will take longer to get the mail going. Their hours are also being cut. But they should have it by now. You might have your PO put a tracer on it if they will.

Also older than ... and glad to be above rather than under the ... dirt. Anyone remember 78 mm. ... no, that was r.p.m. ... records? And the needle being on a circular disk that one lifted off of the record and put up, over and back to be held in place above the arm that swung back and forth over the record but didn't move up or down? Our "Party line" phone was a big brown wooden box on the wall with a metal thing like a tulip sticking out of the front into which you talked, and a line with a black tube on the end that hung on a yoke sticking out of the side of the phone, that lifted when you took the receiver off to listen, which connected the phone to the line, by making the contacts with the large batteries inside. If you wanted to call some other person on your line, after listening to see whether the line was busy, you turned a crank on the right side to make the double bells on the front of the phone ring, in a code of short and long rings, which rang in everyone else's phone on the line, and the ones whose code it was answered ... sometimes others did, as well (almost always remaining silent while doing so). We have found it a lot cheaper at Christmas to drop our parcels to Ottawa off at the bus station and have it go by bus. That way my BIL has to pick up the parcel at his bus station which is a bit of a pain but about a tenth of the cost. Once the parcel arrives the bus station phones you to say it is there if you put the phone number on the parcel. Sure is a lot quicker too!

The cost for mailing parcels by Canada post has gotten rediculous. They even charge a gas surcharge. I sent two letter size envelopes out yesterday by Express Mail and it cost my nineteen dollars and change. BAH HUMBUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They probably wouldn't get there any sooner than regular mail but I needed to know that they reached their destination.

Not to say that Canada Post is slow but the other
day I saw a mailman stomping on a snail.
I asked him why and he said, "The little bugger has been following me all day"

Heather, I received your beautiful card on Friday and one from Tami as well and a few others. I saw the pickets last night at the processing plant here and they were letting the trucks out of the gate with no problems.

Since I worked for Canada Post until I retired I can only say that everything you say is true!
Customer service went down the tubes years ago,and kept going down.

Slow down in Canada's mail? My first thought was, "How can they tell?"

We often receive payments from Canadian guests who are renting our Maui condo. I've never SEEN mail this slow. By the time they arrive in Chicagoland the date stamps are fading off. Lots of pretty postage stamps, though.

My apologies to two of my Canadian friends. I don't know which two, either! I was short 2 Canadian stamps and had the cards laying on the table near my stack of already stamped cards. I bought the 2 stamps, went to put them on, and can't find the cards! I am assuming that they got picked up with the other cards and sent with NO POSTAGE! So if you get your card with postage due, I am sorry!

A friend in New Brunswick send me something a month ago, and it had not arrived yet. Should we assume that it's caught in the system and will show up soon, or just completely lost?
