John, I had a pretty good year here. French Canadian is on her third flush with another to come if the temps hold. I think it is just that way some years, I had one like that a couple of years ago with no rhyme or reason. I figure they should be allowed the odd 'off' one. :) I say this for any and all zones.... improve your soil and plant them directly into the ground so you do not have to fertilize or water so much. A good root system will give you a good plant and good flowers. I fertilized mine for only the second( and last) time this year the last week in August. That is really my only 2 'secrets'.

You said you applied plumbers tape, but sight unseen I would bet you got the wrong tape. Those cheap little blue&white rolls of PTFE(teflon) tape commonly found in all the hardware and home supply stores are single density Teflon tape. Single density tape is only intended to by used on SAE & NPT threads up to 3/8". You angle stop valve is no doubt a 1/2" NPT thread. For 1/2" and greater threads you should use the red triple density tape and even with the triple density tape it still requires three full layers to insure a seal. You can find the red triple density tape in all Lowe's or HD stores in the section where they keep solders and soldering paste. You will find Yellow Rolls Double density tape (commonly labeled as "Gas Tape"), the tape is also yellow, and you will find RED rolls of Triple Density Tape. Although it is called Red, in reality the roll is red but the tape is a light pink color. When applying the tape you begin on the end of the pipe and make one complete turn around the threads even with the end of the pipe then continue wrapping so that each wrap overlaps the successive wrap by 2/3 the width so that by the time you get to the solid part of the pipe at the end of the thread section you will have 3 full layers at any given point. The tape must be pulled to tension while wrapping to insure it gets down into the thread grooves. Those cheap rolls of white single density tape are about $.99 a roll, expect to pay about $2.98 a roll for the triple density.

And the needle being on a circular disk that one lifted off of the record and put up, over and back to be held in place above the arm that swung back and forth over the record but didn't move up or down? Our "Party line" phone was a big brown wooden box on the wall with a metal thing like a tulip sticking out of the front into which you talked, and a line with a black tube on the end that hung on a yoke sticking out of the side of the phone, that lifted when you took the receiver off to listen, which connected the phone to the line, by making the contacts with the large batteries inside. If you wanted to call some other person on your line, after listening to see whether the line was busy, you turned a crank on the right side to make the double bells on the front of the phone ring, in a code of short and long rings, which rang in everyone else's phone on the line, and the ones whose code it was answered ... sometimes others did, as well (almost always remaining silent while doing so). If you wanted to call someone on another party line, you pushed a black button on the left side of the phone and turned the aforementioned crank on the right side, which silenced all of the bells on your line and sent a signal to the operator on the central switchboard and she connected you to the other line and pushed a button or turned a crank to ring the code of the person to whom you wanted to talk. ole joyfuelled ... who liked eating at the dining room table ... in the large kitchen
