My Christmas gift.... early (Pic)

My husband knocked me off my feet this Christmas. He MADE me a china cabinet. He's been woodworking since he was a teen and he used a shop that a friend of his owns and secretly made this beautiful oak hutch for me. The pictures don't do it justice. It's something I'll treasure forever and pass on through the generations.

Betty, you just showed WHY we've all missed you so much... your photos, your stories, your sense of humor, your Alfred. I'm so glad you are back. He's just the sweetest man and you are so lucky to have him. And getting those pretty Peace ornaments for him was very special. Your tablesetting is beautiful, ALL of it. Those dishes are to die for. I mean I am seriously loving them! And like Jeanne said, they were meant for you to find. (but be careful showing Jeanne anything with pines, LOL. She's like Luvs and her acorns.) Well crepuscule is definitely on my list for some area of the yard ! It's too pretty not to try . Thank you kate for the suggestion and link ! I will read all about it next ! :) Subk3... I don't live far from belle meade and I toured last July so I must have missed it in bloom ! Or possibly passed it up , it's a large property ! What a great photo !! And if you have an extra new dawn I'll take you up on the offer ! We bought the pergola at a place called " lot of faith amish and Mennonite built furniture " in dickson . They have an area of clearance display models ,which saved him a lot of money . They have a catalog as well of everything they offer and are just so sweet . I really can't wait to get it delivered ! Maybe if you ever want to meet and share a garden tour we could arrange that . I'd love to see others rose gardens in the area ! Buford good luck with your fresh new beds ! Rose folly it gets so dang hot here ! We seem to skip spring after 2, weeks and then it's in the 90s forever it seems . I love it ! :)

I have an "EPI", so called Mexican Orchid that DSIL left on the side of the house when he & family went to Okinawa.....I didn't want it. It is beautiful and in California Central Valley it thrived, outdoors in a covered screened patio. It has been here in So. Or now for 12 years and it has survived, but only on its' own terms. It used to bloom on Mothers' Day.....and today it (needs to be put in the garage) has 24 buds that need another warmer month to bloom. Every year it has been more prolific and I think we have 4 huge cocoa baskets that cascade a couple of feet. When we move it for winter, we usually lose some of the growth that I can't throw away, so every year I have many new starts to share. We leave it in the garage winters, with only light from the windows in the garage doors, and it survives our long absences while we do our snowbird thing, being gone 6 to 8 weeks with no water. It turned out to be one of my favorite things...and yet I don't really "know" much about it.

Lynn, Our salad was served after the tasting to clear our palates. It was served with a chardonnay wine. Here's the recipe: Salad to pair w/ Chardonnay Basil Vinaigrette 10 basil leaves 1/3 C extra virgin olive oil 1 1/2 Tbsp Champagne vinegar Pinch salt Couple cranks black pepper 1/8 tsp ground cardamon In blender or food processor, blend leaves & vinegar. Drizzle in evoo while blending. Add seasoning, mix, and refrigerate. Salad Triple Creme Brie - a wheel or large wedge 3 Granny Smith Apples Sourdough Boule (I like Nashoba Valley from Concord) Field Greens Cut double creme into small wedges while cold. Warm to room temp before service. Core and cut apples into thin wedges. Store in ice water until plating. Blot before service. Cut Sourdough into large, thin, crust-less triangles. Lightly toast until barely brown. Brush with evoo and sprinkle with coarse salt while warm. Toss field greens in dressing and plate. Add 2 pieces of cheese. Fan out 3 pieces of apple. Lay one toast triangle across top.

OMG, that is absolutely stunning! So is the fact that he put so many hours into it, and went to all that trouble to surprise you. He sure loves you, and you'll be reminded of that every time you look at the hutch.

PS: It must weigh a ton! Must have been fun to move. :-)

Very lovely, indeed! If you condensed that glassware in the top cupboards you'd have lots of room for all the collectible glass and dishes that abound at thrift stores and flea markets...could have that lovely brimming in no time, LOL!

Thanks to everyone. Yes, he's a keeper. The glassware in the cabinet is the reason he made it for me. It's all my princess house crystal I've been collecting since I was 18 years old. I finally have a way to display it now.

That is a beauty! I love the idea of personally made furniture. I have a friend who has a canopy bed, an open display cabinet, jelly safe, etc., each made by her DH or an uncle.

I don't know how long it took him but I'll ask him in the morning when he gets home from work. I did ask when we went to pick it up and he said "A long time." I didn't know he was up to anything. He plays Texas Holdem poker twice a week with a group of friends and he spent quite a few "texas holdem" nights on this project. I'm not the questioning type of wife I guess. Lol

I wish I knew how to reset my date on my camera. I took pictures of my daughters concert last night and those are in 2005 also. Any suggestions?

What kind of camera do you have? Do you have a Menu or Setup setting? It's usually under that menu. Once you select it, you'd just need to arrow up or down to change the date. It might even explain it to you.

I have a Vivitar Vivicam 5100. I do have a menu button, so I'll have to play around with that and see if I can figure it out. Is that the same place I would go to turn off the date altogether? Thanks for your help.

Mom24, yes, if you have a menu setting, you should be able to turn the date display off too.

To the person who asked how long it took- he said it took the better part of 9 months and then he joked I could have had that or a baby. Um...I'll take the hutch.
