My Christmas gift.... early (Pic)

My husband knocked me off my feet this Christmas. He MADE me a china cabinet. He's been woodworking since he was a teen and he used a shop that a friend of his owns and secretly made this beautiful oak hutch for me. The pictures don't do it justice. It's something I'll treasure forever and pass on through the generations.

Hi There is a lot of info on the internet on Betas We only have one and when we first got it we had it in a 1 gallon fish bowl. The bowl needed to be changed every second day or it was filthy and it did not seem like it was 'happy'in there so after about a week or so I added it to our 20 gal tank. After a few days of hiding out, it is now thriving and actually playing with the other fish. Betas aren't necessarily solitary creatures, you just can't have 2 males together but you can have male and female and they are compatibable with other similar size fish. The main worry is actually the betas flowing fins being attacked by others not vice versa. The same problem occurs with angel fish - those fins are tempting. With our beta we have 1 angel fish, 4 black widow tetras and 4 mollies. They all get along great. Most, but not all info I have read discourages the small decorative containers for the fish. They can survive in them but they are not ideal. The beta would actually prefer higher temps than you can achieve without a tank heater as well as more space. Kind of like a lot of so called low light plants - they will survive in low light but they will thrive in more. I am not an expert - just wanted to offer a little info. Betty, you just showed WHY we've all missed you so much... your photos, your stories, your sense of humor, your Alfred. I'm so glad you are back. He's just the sweetest man and you are so lucky to have him. And getting those pretty Peace ornaments for him was very special. Your tablesetting is beautiful, ALL of it. Those dishes are to die for. I mean I am seriously loving them! And like Jeanne said, they were meant for you to find. (but be careful showing Jeanne anything with pines, LOL. She's like Luvs and her acorns.) As for Christmas stuff during the summer months.. BRING IT ON. That really helps me deal with our 100 degree days and think good thoughts. hugs, Karen

Awww thanks guys! I was worried that mine was going to come out too "amateurish", and not look good on it's own, especially considering that I was working from an inspiration photo. Thanks for the vote of confidence! Fly and Jen and all, I got all materials at Michael's. Plain wood blocks, 19 gauge wire, and the wood letters. I was going to either hand-paint or decopage the letters, but when I saw their neat wood pre-cut letters I opted to get those instead. I did hand paint the date on the name plaque, and it was HARD to get it to come out right. If I did it again, I'd probably do some sort of rub-on lettering. It was really, really difficult to get the strokes even. For one small portion, like a date, I think it adds to the charm, but if the whole piece was shaky and wobbly looking, I don't think I'd be happy with it. The kids and I just painted, crackled, repainted, sanded, glazed, and repainted the boards, painted and distressed the letters, and then glued them on. (That makes it sound MUCH harder than it was.) For the name plaque we just stained those letters. I'm exhausted from it, but they were worth it, and hopefully the recipients will like them.

We are definitely into the countdown & I have started - my DH is in food sales and gives each of his customers gifts (about 40 of them!). I start right after Christmas & get gifts for the next year on clearance. Usually we give books, candles, and ornaments and I try and stay under $5 for each. I have started buying for family too - all the grands - kids & neices & nephews (all 20 of them) get books. I purchase from a catalog/website that has on sale & clearance - I try to find books under $5 (for the customers mentioned above also). If you want the name of the website please e-mail me. For our 4 kids we wait until we get a list from them. I have bought items off the list & then got their list and ended up spending too much! For brothers & sisters & immediate nieces & nephews - I make jam/jelly & they each get a jar of wonderful goodness - we grow the fruit & then I make jam & jelly for them. I am about 1/2 way done on that... I don't post all that often - but I enjoy lurking - what a wonderful group of people. Thanks.

OMG, that is absolutely stunning! So is the fact that he put so many hours into it, and went to all that trouble to surprise you. He sure loves you, and you'll be reminded of that every time you look at the hutch.

PS: It must weigh a ton! Must have been fun to move. :-)

Very lovely, indeed! If you condensed that glassware in the top cupboards you'd have lots of room for all the collectible glass and dishes that abound at thrift stores and flea markets...could have that lovely brimming in no time, LOL!

Thanks to everyone. Yes, he's a keeper. The glassware in the cabinet is the reason he made it for me. It's all my princess house crystal I've been collecting since I was 18 years old. I finally have a way to display it now.

That is a beauty! I love the idea of personally made furniture. I have a friend who has a canopy bed, an open display cabinet, jelly safe, etc., each made by her DH or an uncle.

I don't know how long it took him but I'll ask him in the morning when he gets home from work. I did ask when we went to pick it up and he said "A long time." I didn't know he was up to anything. He plays Texas Holdem poker twice a week with a group of friends and he spent quite a few "texas holdem" nights on this project. I'm not the questioning type of wife I guess. Lol

I wish I knew how to reset my date on my camera. I took pictures of my daughters concert last night and those are in 2005 also. Any suggestions?

What kind of camera do you have? Do you have a Menu or Setup setting? It's usually under that menu. Once you select it, you'd just need to arrow up or down to change the date. It might even explain it to you.

I have a Vivitar Vivicam 5100. I do have a menu button, so I'll have to play around with that and see if I can figure it out. Is that the same place I would go to turn off the date altogether? Thanks for your help.

Mom24, yes, if you have a menu setting, you should be able to turn the date display off too.

To the person who asked how long it took- he said it took the better part of 9 months and then he joked I could have had that or a baby. Um...I'll take the hutch.
