She needs to see a dr.Theres a mediine they can give you its drops would help fast.Ear aches are painful,alsofor relief quick but like I said she needs a dr.You can turn hair blow dryer on low and blow towards ear,not close .

So sorry to hear Ashley is in pain. You're a good mom, Judy. Your method didn't help but the thought in it was what made you a good mom. I had a very bad earache once (also at 19 years old) and my mom did the same thing with the peroxide. My eardrum ended up getting a small hole in it from the pressure. After the pressure popped my eardrum, there was a lot of fluid like you described and the pressure eased up. It sounds like that might have happened with Ashley. She needs to go to the doctor or at least call in to the doctor and the on call Doctor might offer a prescription over the phone. Poor thing is probably in so much pain. Continue with the rice because heat does help but don't do the blowdryer thing. I just had my daughter in for an earache not too long ago and the doctor told me this was dangerous.(Sorry bulldinkie, don't mean to step on your toes) I pray your daughter is feeling better soon and out of pain. Please get her to an ENT as soon as possible. Don't mess around with your GP, ears are a specialty.

Putting anything in the ear, if there's a perforation of the ear drum (and sounds as if that may be the case) can be excruciating. Using peroxide is iffy--it does melt wax, if that's the problem (but a build up of wax wouldn't give the symptoms you've described), but peroxide turns into water after it fizzes. So then you run the risk of adding 'swimmer's ear' to the problem (which is actually a fungus infection).

She needs to be seen by an ear specialist. Sooner rather than later is better so she doesn't experience any permanent hearing loss.

It sounds like ear infection to me. Go to the ER or a minor medical place ASAP if your Dr. is closed today, which most are. Also, tell Ashley the next time she gets the slightest sign that this may be coming on again, to get something for it and stop it before it get so bad. Maybe Dr. can prescribe something she can keep on hand. It seems things always happen on a weekend doesn't it?

I agree with Azzalea...tell Ashely that she needs to see an ENT (Ear, nose and throat specialist). If she goes to the hospital's Emergency room, they will have the ENT Specialist there see her.
Never let a family doctor fool around with an acute problem, except to demand a referral if her medical insurance company won't pay for the specialist without one.

As a child I was plagued with earaches, but cannot remember just what was done. Possibly I was near crazy with the pain.

Years ago (as an adult) I developed one. I thought I was going to die. I couldn't stay to sit, lay down, talk, or to be talked to. I asked to be driven to the emergency room in the middle of the night.
There I was given some sort of a shot that contained codene, and started on antibiotics I believe. I went home and went right to sleep, and when I woke up, the pain was surprisingly all gone.

I just checked my home remedy book, and did some reading on the net, and it seems that peroxide is a very common home remedy, so I doubt if it did any harm.
The link below says it is usually caused by an infection, and is usually cleared up with antibiotics.

I'd suggest getting her to an emergency room, or some sort of a walk in clinic if there is one available. It is likely the pain will not go away without the help of antibiotics. I hope someone can get her in and helped soon.

I feel so sorry for her. That was the worst pain I think I have ever had.

It sounds like a perforated eardrum. Please bring her to an ENT, even if you have to go to the ER. I hope she's feeling better today. Ears are nothing to mess around with and a general practice doctor isn't qualified to deal with it...they'd probably send her to a specialist either way.

I second what Sue said. Peroxide was about the only "cure" my mom used. If it'd been harmful, I doubt any of us kids would have any hearing left. Another thing my dad used to do for our earaches was blow cigarette smoke in them. Times sure have changed since the late '40's.

(I'm willing to bet the peroxide did less harm than cigarette smoke would've.) ;-o

I can feel for Ashley. I woke up before Thanksgiving and my ear was killing me. I was nautious, dizzy and felt like my head could blow up at any time. I went on decongestants but ended up a week later taking antibiotics. It took a week before the antibiotics really worked and I felt more like myself. When DH's ear was bothering him, I warmed up some olive oil and put some into his ears. He said that it really helped. Later I found it on a list of home remedies.

Judy...when my daughter Carri was little she had a terrible time with ear aches and infections.

The doctors told me to put peroxide in her ears. Years afterwards when her ears would start bothering her she would come with the peroxide bottle asking me to do her ears.

The first time I used it the peroxide bubbled up and brought big "chunks" of stuff out of her ears...

It actually got rid of the infection better than the meds had done before.

I'm absolutely sure you didn't do anything wrong by using it.

I used to get "glue ear" when I was little. I had tubes put in five times. And now that I have used peroxide as well as an alcohol/vinegar mixture in my ears as an adult, I REALLY wonder if over half of my problems as a child could have been avoided if the d@mn doctor (ENT) had just told my mom to put alcohol in my ears every time I got water in them. I seriously think a lot of it was swimmer's ear.

That said, do have a doctor check out her ears so you know whether or not the eardrum has been perforated. Even if it has, it was NOT necessarily the peroxide that did it. The fluid buildup could have done it. Both of my eardrums still have perforations. I have used peroxide during a bad earache, and even with the perforation, it can hurt really bad from the fizzing. When that happens, I just dump it out immediately. That immediate release of the fizzing liquid can also cause what feels like a "pop." Earaches can hurt really really bad, yet not cause the perforation. It's just such a delicate system, and pain is the body's way of telling you there's a problem.

When you do go to the doctor, ask about using the alcohol and vinegar, as well as the peroxide. That way you have the doc's input as to whether one or the other is better in her situation. And don't let them put you off and say it's a waste of time. I've cleared up an outer ear infection with the alcohol and vinegar as well as gotten a great deal of improvement on an inner ear infection. It CAN work.

I hope she feels better soon! A combo sinus/ear infection is the PITS! You might also try getting her to take some Airborne to boost her immune system.

Sure hope she's better fast- not only is an ear ache extremely painful, we can hardly stand it when our "babies" are hurting & we can't "fix it"!

DH complained of an ear ache one night just days before his ENT check-up for the vocal chord cancer- cured since '05. I put warm olive oil in it, then ask Dr. to check it when he went. I told Dr. what I'd done. He said I did exactly the right thing; mentioned Olive Oil was used for healing as far back as Biblical days.

ENT I once worked for always told his patients to use alcohol when ever they got eve na drop of water in their ears- said it dries it up, so tell DD to be cautious when showering...especially if she does have infection.

Having had two boys who were plagued with ear infections as babies...I learned lots of tricks and they've all been mentioned here...after the eardrum bursts the pain usually starts subsiding and the drainage starts flowing out...but she still probably gonna need ANTIBODS so get her to a dr!! Hope she feels better soon!!
