Before and After: Thanks to Valspar, eBay and Craigslist. :-) PIC

My daughter moved out in August and we just redid her basement bedroom into a TV/party room. All of the furniture is from either Craigslist or eBay. Not counting the bar, I spent under $700. (sectional, glass tables, bumper/poker table, wood chairs and 2 matching stools (hidden behind the bar) and the buffet). I bought the bar and the matching stools a few years ago on eBay and am glad we are finally able to use it. The pictures on the wall are from eBay too (not 100% happy with those though).

Here is the before after DD's furniture was all out. The green was supposed to be waves for her tropical theme.

And after we paid a painter and I shopped. :-)

The TV is on an adjustable arm so it can be turned to face the table and bar if we want. We ran all the cords behind the wall. The table and chairs came from 2 different people, but I think they match pretty well!

I might try to find an old narrow and long mirror or an old sign (or make something) for under the bar shelf. I did think too about painting the silver table bases black, but the silver doesn't seem so bad now that the room is done. Otherwise I am pretty content with our redecorating job.

Anybody else redo their kids room when they moved out?

A WORD, All the above opinions are each valid in their own special way. I like what Lisa wrote,as I was thinking thoughts along those lines myself. The words,'much to do about nothing' come to mind. Yes,they were very impolite to use the photo,and more so now,as they seem to imply its their plant in the latest ad.[perhaps to keep out of trouble with their image hoster ?] But one thing nags me, how could they contact Stephania for permission if they had no e-mail address at the time of their original posting? (he later posted one tho). And to give credit to Stephania some how,would be awkward for them,saying to the public,'thats not our plant but,yours might look like that some day'. But most of all,I feel this puts a lot of undue pressure on Stephania,to 'continue the arguement',when he has already made his own feelings known in his posts dated July 18th and July 20th. If this were happening to me,I'd feel a little uneasy. He has all the well researched information to decide what to do. I suggest we leave it to him now. People love to tell horror stories, Lily, but there are plenty of happy stories you probably haven't heard. Ten years ago my son was selling the occasional piece of ham radio equipment on eBay, and I asked him to list some of his father's chemical engineering books for me. He said no, he wanted me to learn to sell on eBay myself because i would love it. I was resistant, but he was right--all it took was one good sale for me to love it. Like most of us, I just had to get over the hump of that first listing. It seems intimidating, but eBay wants sellers and they make it easy. As for the horror stories, I have none to tell. When you set up a Paypal account they'll ask to access your bank account. It's a simple matter to open a new checking account (usually free) just for Paypal, keeping a low balance on the very slim chance it could get into the wrong hands. Mine never has more than $300 in it. As for Craigslist, it, too, is easy--plus it's free. Scammers love it but they are usually easy to spot. The Craigslist site issues warnings, spelling out what to look for. A scammer is unlikely describe what you're selling by name; instead, they'll mention your "item." A famous scam offers to pay by Cashier's check. You will quickly get a feel for the authentic email from a real buyer. You don't put your contact information in the ad, unless you want to. I never do. Buyers contact me via an anonymous email address, and I decide which ones I want to respond to. Except for the time I sold a piece of equipment too heavy to move, I meet all my buyers away from my home, at public places. Again, I have no horror stories to report. If you've bought at 40 years worth of auctions, I'll bet you have some stuff collectors would love. You could have a blast doing this, Lily. Oh gosh, your floors are gorjuss. What a beautiful job you've done on the house and such a knack you have for it. If I had my druthers, I'd never cover the natural woodwork, but yours looks very nice. The thermostat and the mirror are such the perfect touches. My mom had covers made of brass and mahogany. I'm thinking she could have just painted them like you did. Ours was a box colonial like yours, built in the late 1900s. My sister bought it from mom to keep it in the family.

I love many of the finds pictured here. I live in an economically depressed, rural area, and most of Craigslist is uninspiring and often unintentionally funny. Some people have big ideas about what their junk is worth! We've done well in the Farm & Garden section, however, both buying and selling. This summer I acquired a riding mower for $375 delivered. The owner is a mechanic (turned out he retired from the company my son works for), and the mower was well cared for. But mostly I came back here to thank My3dogs for starting this thread. As soon as I saw the title, I remembered that it had been awhile since I last checked Craigslist for a cedar wardrobe. My house is very old, and has almost no closets. I've been keeping my various jackets in an ancient but worthless wardrobe that is ready to fall apart, so I've been looking for a good replacement for about a year. Most of the ones listed had no bar for hanging clothes, and were overpriced anyway. So I saw your thread and went directly to Craigslist, where I found the perfect cedar wardrobe: just the right size, with a bar inside the top and a nice drawer on the bottom--for $75! The people even agreed to keep it for me until after Christmas, when my son can get it with his pickup. Thanks, and happy holidays to all!

Looks awesome Lydia. I just finished re-doing my living room. Wall color is coffee and ceiling is called almond oil w/white trim. I got some new lamps, too.

Nicole, that room looks so tranquil. Love the black and white photos!

I like the wall pictures too, but in the light you can see they are posters.. I would have rather the eBay seller put them on heavier stock. They do add a needed 'pop' of color though.

Charlee!!!!! Where have you been girl?? Your living room sounds beautiful. Hope you have access to a computer again cause we sure miss you around here!

Ritamay, the paint is Valspar Waverly Classics Collection in Dune. It has strong olive green undertones which isn't so obvious in the large room, but in the small bathroom the green really shows up. We do like it though, it is a good color with the blue and greens we had in the room. The painter said he might switch to that brand of paint because it covered so well.

Lydia, I love your DIY creative decorating! You must have a lot of fun with it. My favorite piece in this room is the bar. I think the mirror would be a nice addition, BTW.

What's the theme of the artwork? (I'm viewing this from work, on my little monitor with my tired old eyes.)

Nicole, your room is very attractive, but looking at those weights has made me even more tired. :-)

Alisande, they are vintage reproductions of bar, liquor prints "CONTRATTO" & "DIONIS GRAN SPUMANTE","CHAMPAGNE JOSEPH PERRIER" & "SAUVION'S BRANDY" (sorry for the caps..taken from the auction I won).

The bar is SUPER heavy (took 5 guys to move it into the room and even then they still dropped it), has a marble top and all kinds of drawers and things on the back side of it. It was definitely an impulse buy. I really have to quit looking at furniture now cause our house is full! DH was about to kill me cause every week I'd send him to pick up something I'd bought. :-) He's happy with the finished room though.

Oh, wow, what a difference, Lyd! I love it and I remember when you bought that bar! I think a large mirror behind it would be great but I would move that shelf to the side or put it someplace else. A longer shelf with bottles on it, bigger than the mirror, would be cool. I wonder if mirror tiles would look OK, framed out with some wide moulding?

Under $700 for everything? You are amazing!

Lydia my color is more like coffee w/cream in it. lol It's taken me a while to get it done but I took my time on it. Only had 1 cat get her tail in the paint so that wasn't too bad. I'm trying to decide on flooring now. Some of you may remember I had pink walls before. I like the neutral and plan to keep it. I told my friends this would be the last time I painted in here. Gettin too old and achey to be doing this. Will hire it next time. I have redone 2 houses in the last year and figured it was time to do mine.
Oh and no more wallpaper or borders for me.
