How Much Are Frozen Turkeys?

I just saw the ad from our local Marsh grocery and their frozen Norbest turkeys 12 to 24 pounds with a twenty five dollar purchase are $.57 a pound. It says they are tender young turkey's. The sweet potatoes are $.37 a pound, I don't need any of those, but that is not a bad price around here. Fresh cranberries are 2 twelve ounce packages for $4.00. What are some of the prices for Thanksgiving foods in your area?

A grocery ad beginning today has frozen turkey's for $.69/#. Can't say how much sweet potatoes are or cranberries, as I have not priced those. North central Ohio.

Publix has young frozen turkeys for .59 a pound. I get great sweet potatoes from a guy who has a stand on the roadside for $2 a basket (or 4 large potatoes) but never weighed them. Haven't seen cranberries advertised.

OMG, Bizzo, I just wing it! First, when I'm at the meat counter this year, I want the turkey butterflied but with the skin and bones left in it. From the same shop, last year the butcher asked me one time if I wanted it deboned. Hemming and hawing, I said yes. What I got was a 1/2 turkey breast that was 3-4" thick, skin left on. I grilled it and it made wonderful sandwiches. No problem trying to carve it and get all the meat off the bones. Here's what I intend to do this Thanksgiving-- Wash the turkey breast and dry it. Then stuff sage leaves under the skin along with some small pieces of butter. The skin be covered with a rub of Penzeys Southwest Seasoning. I use a small gas grill so it isn't set up for indirect heat. Usually, I keep the heat in the 325-350 degree range The turkey breast will be placed on the grill, skin down for the time it takes to make the skin a light golden brown. Then flip the turkey so that it rests on it's bones and cooks for the rest of the time that way. Total cooking time should be 60-75 min. I use an instant read thermometer (I target about 170 degrees), but cut into the thickest part of the breast--meat near the bone should no longer be pink. Using these instructions, your turkey breast should look dark golden brown and very moist. This is our favorite way to cook turkey. Since we have a couple of months before Thanksgiving, please cook a 1/2 turkey breast yourself. Cooking times will be similar and you will get a feel for how it's done and whether or not you like it. lazycook, be sure you roast at no lower than 325, I usually do mine at 350 and a 13-14 pound turkey would take about 3 and a half hours, unstuffed. How to thaw? A bird that size will take 2-3 days to thaw in the fridge or you can submerge it, still wrapped, in cold water. Change the water every half hour or so and it'll be thawed in 8 hours, give or take an hour. I've been known to leave a frozen turkey overnight in the sink, although I realize that the USDA says that's an absolute no-no, so I don't advise other people to do it. As for temperature, I roast to 165F, I find that 180F in the thigh gives you way overcooked breast meat. I do hope that you have company coming or you are going to have a ton of leftover turkey, the "experts" recommend a pound per person. Good luck, cooking turkey is easy, actually. If you want the skin crispy, roast uncovered. You can start at a higher heat and turn the heat down if you prefer, and Ann T does a quicker high-heat method, but it can make a mess in the oven if you don't have the right pan. Annie

Well, it's too late now because I posted this after the fact. There is no ingredients label so doesn't that mean no additives? Don't they HAVE to list them if they put stuff in it? I bought it so we're eating it, regardless. Soooo, should I throw him in the freezer? I'd have to take him right out again to start defrosting in the fridge...

I've never heard of one of those. But just to play it safe you can always use a meat thermometer to verify that both the stuffing and the turkey are both done to the proper safe temperatures.

One of our grocery stores has Butterball for .48 lb. if you spend $25.00 or more which is not that difficult to do.

I just bought a turkey breast(honeysuckle white) and it was $1.68 per LB. kinda high but I hate all the waste and cutting up a whole bird.

I just found out today that son & SO both have to work, and not be able to make dinner, so Hubs & I will be alone. Although I'm not crazy about turkey, that is what hubs likes (I retain the right to make ham for Christmas...we'll be alone then too) so I want to get a turkey breast and I can pack up some turkey & trimmings for our neighbor upstairs who isn't able to do much cooking because of use of only one hand.

Norbest are .29 cents at Safeway here this week, I doubt if they will be lower anywhere between now and Christmas. I don't need a turkey for either Thanksgiving or Christmas (we're not eating here) but I'll pick up a couple in the 10-12# range and have them in the freezer - I have a BIL who would eat turkey and rolls, cranberry sauce every week of the year given the option, so I try to make a turkey dinner for him every few months.

If I was having dinner here, I would probably opt for a fresh bird, but for the freezer for later - it's hard to pass up .29 cents a pound meat :) I'll put aside a couple of hams and prime ribs too before the end of the year, I find the best prices on those in the next 6 weeks and the week before Easter.

That is a great price at $.29 a pound. I doubt if they will be that cheap around here. We don't have Safeway. I really don't care for turkey breast, or Butter ball turkeys but will eat it if there is nothing else. We are having both turkey and ham for Thanksgiving.

i'm hoping we can find a jennie-o...don't like that stuff they infuse in butterballs...usually it's just the 2 of us with kids showing up later, but ds2 and dil can't travel (she's preggers) so it will be turkey breasts in a cooking sack...so tender and moist that way..

My favorite (but expensive) turkeys are kosher ones when I can find them & when having a bigger crowd for dinner. Secondly I still like Butterballs. Today at Target, Butterballs were .99/lb. Mostly bigger birds, though and too much as only having 6 for Tksgvg.

We paid $.89 lb. I buy 2 15lb turkeys. They're easier to bake and I get more legs and wings.

I just saw an ad for frozen turkeys for 29 cents a pound, with a $50 minimum purchase. Regular sale price $1.29 a pound. But I don't want a whole frozen bird. I want a fresh breast . There's only 4 of us. I have $140 budgeted for everyuthing for Thanksgiving. I'm sure that will be more than enough.
