Turkey (not frozen) tag says sell by 12/10/09

I've only ever bought frozen turkeys before. This one is an all natural, free range with no additives whatsoever. It just seems odd to me that I could keep it in the fridge until December??? I feel funny about keeping it unfrozen until Thanksgiving! Was this a misprint do you think? Should they have been frozen maybe or do you find them like this in your stores?

I wouldn't keep that in my home refrigerator that long!
They are "fresh" turkeys....they say...
They are kept at about 32 degrees....not deep frozen, but not exactly fresh!
I don't find them nearly as good an an honest deep frozen turkey. They have been kept too long in limbo!
I call them a "leaverite"...as in leave her right there!
They are not the same thing as a "fresh killed" turkey.

I love all these photographs, I can look at them nonstop all day long. I live out in Western MA and have a few feeding stations up, one that contains BOSS and Safflower seeds, a thistle sock and a double suet feeder. Lately my feeders are packed with different song birds, chickadees, titmice, pine siskins, finches, white breasted nuthatches, dark eyed juncos, male and female cardinals, although I believe there's only one male cardinal that I keep seeing and along with the two females. I also get occasional house sparrows but lately, they seem to be staying away. I have a bluebird house up in hopes of luring a pair to my yard to raise a family but I'm not keeping my hopes up. Yesterday I was home for the day and sitting in my living room and out my bay window in the front across the street, were two Pileated Woodpeckers, the first I've ever seen. They were working on this one tree for about 2-3 hours, one on each side of the tree and they managed to do a fantastic job carving out a couple of cavities, I was very impressed at how hard they worked. Only wish my camera had a better lense. I've had red bellied, downie and hairy woodpeckers at my suet feeders but never was lucky enough to witness a pileated so close and two for that matter, it was very exciting. Please keep the pictures coming, I so enjoy looking at them and love to hear that there are bluebirds not to far from where I live. Fingers are crossed that they come to visit my yard in the spring. I need to follow your lead Karen and not hop on the scale daily. It's really discouraging. I still have 4-5 lbs to go and now I'm getting really frustrated. Someone just asked me yesterday "but you've reached your target clothes size, right?" and that put it in perspective. I am officially in a size 6 jean. I need to shut up and stop complaining. I have lost 3 sizes (I was a 12) since January. I'd like to be in a 4 but I don't think my body type is such. Big hips and booty no matter how much I lose. So, I've decided it's not the weight that I'm aiming for, it's the tone. I just need to keep reminding myself of that. I think I need to put the scale away. It's in my kitchen!!! I went out and went crazy buying snacks from the bins at Sprouts for my 6+ hour plane ride coming up with DD. I want to have tons of stuff to entertain us. Crayons, coloring books, books to read (for her and me)... and snacks. I got dark chocolate covered raisins, jelly beans, salt water taffy, sugar coated peanuts, yogurt covered raisins. And two outrageously expensive dark chocolate organic chocolate bars. I'm planning to take a bunch of protein powder with me too so I can use that when I get hungry instead of relying on take out for when I'm running around with the bride. The hard part will be not overdosing on my favorite foods while I'm there. I have some serious cravings for home food, and none of it is diet friendly. Anyone have any travel food suggestions? I want food that will last, take up time, and be interesting. I plan on eating a big breakfast so I'm not hungry, but I'm pretty bored on planes!

TGIF y'all! Welcome to the newbies and my old friends. Happy Thanksgiving to those up north! Houseguests were last weekend and it was wonderful! They were fabulous and helpful guests, we had a blast! It was good to have the house full again! Tomorrow I've got a chiro session scheduled, a haircut and then the wedding of a co-worker. It should be a nice event. Sunday we're taking MIL out to brunch and then marketing. She's the one who lost her license in August and has gotten a learner's permit (at 90!) to try and retake the test after driving lessons. She's a sharp cookie, she might just be able to do it. If not, we'll have to consider the alternative sources of transportation. The taxi coupons are a joke, everything around here is a $25+ plus fare--one way!! Sunday later afternoon and eve we've got plans with friends and hopefully an activity. We'll see... Happy Birthday Susie! Nancy, I'd love to be in Traverse City this weekend for the festival! Have fun! Maggie- good luck on the sale! As far as cooking, I use a thermometer now. Pick one up, a plain dial one is only a couple dollars and one with a probe and separate unit with alarm is about $15. REALLY makes a difference to have turkey cooked to the proper temperature, especially white meat. We have two "big" grocery chains around here and not a lot of competition. However since we grow the most turkeys (insert your own joke here!), we should be cheap since the shipping is less, and we have several processing plants. The bigger chain has quit posting prices at holiday time. They both have a policy they won't be undersold on turkey so Cub lets Rainbow set the price. Last year it was 59Â¢/# the Sunday before Thanksgiving and then they dropped the price to, I believe it was 29Â¢/# on Wednesday. Cub matched it. Some years they would beat it by a penny. Last year Cub slipped and put a $1 off coupon in some of the papers. My cousin got one of them so he bought a 14# turkey for 29Â¢/# less $1 for the coupon! LOL He's quite the bargain hunter! This year it was 58Â¢/# and I was in the store yesterday and Cub seemed to keep the price. Of course this price required a $25 additional purchase, last year it was $50 IIRC. I prefer turkey breast and that runs close to $2/# here. I know I could cut the breast off the whole one and toss the rest or use it in casseroles or something but I don't like messing with something that big. Amen to what LindaC said - leave 'er be. Those things have more preservatives than Twinkies and scare the carp out of me - I would rather get a turkey loaf from the deli than a "fresh for weeks" turkey....

The more I see and read, the more I'm convinced that frozen turkey is the way to go unless you've got a local source. As Linda said, "fresh" means it's hovering around 32 degrees, which sounds to me like depending on how it's handled it may go through various states of frozen and unfrozen. That can't be good. I'd rather a really fresh bird from the farmer or one that was deep frozen right off the bat.

Well, it's too late now because I posted this after the fact. There is no ingredients label so doesn't that mean no additives? Don't they HAVE to list them if they put stuff in it? I bought it so we're eating it, regardless.

Soooo, should I throw him in the freezer? I'd have to take him right out again to start defrosting in the fridge...

If it were me I'd store it as low as possible in the fridge, turn the fridge temp down a few settings, and take comfort in the fact that I'm being more careful than 99% of the general population. I definitely wouldn't freeze and thaw it at this point; as you said, timing's too tight.

I'd eat it....keep it very cold between now and then....but PLEASE don't save it until December 10th!!
You will be fine cooking it thursday!

I have nothing to offer...clueless. That being said, I know that beef is 'aged', but chicken goes bad in the blink of an eye. I wonder if these turkeys are closer to beef in how long it can hang around. I've seen lots and lots of 'natural' turkeys in the cases, fresh not frozen, sold weeks before TG. Haven't read about anyone dying...yet.

I would cook it now and freeze the meat . When I do this, I remove the breast pieces as whole as possible, so when I thaw them, I can slice them very thin,
and re heat in a barely simmering pan of broth .

Jessy, those "fresh" turkeys are really frozen....but not "deep" frozen....just to about 30 degrees. I think that the regulations say that a turkey can be labeled as fresh if it has never been stored below 30 degrees....but perhaps it's below 28 degrees.

Hey Linda I was at TJ's - I started 'poking' the turkeys (have fun with that one) - they were all pretty soft....next time should I bring my temp prob and get kicked out?

Yeahbut...until today they were pretty hard....and a hard turkey is too close to frozen for me...
Have fun with that one.

hmmmm....dh just came home with our turkey - always buy frozen on Sunday before thanksgiving...and it soft!

It is fresh turkey - Shady Brook Farms...use or freeze by 11/28.

Now you guys have me nervous! Is not as good?
