Where to download free music?

Is there anywhere on the internet where you can download free music. I want to send emails once in a while with music in the background.

Hi Betty,

I'm not sure if this will help you but, I've heard that Limeware.com is a good free site for IPods and the like. You might want to check it out.

If you will be satisfied with a MIDI (instrumental), just go to Google, type in the name of the song followed by MIDI. You'll get a lot of websites to choose from which furnish MIDI's legally and free of charge.

The problems are these: 1) All "free" download (sharing) sites are illegal. And they're still searching and prosecuting nationwide. I've read recently that the average settlement is something like $3,600.00. 2) Since the days of Napster when everyone had to be at one place, the selection available has been incredibly compromised. Maybe you'll find what you want of maybe you won't. 3) Many of these site are LOADED with crap you don't want to mess with. Can't remember the name of the one based out of Vanu Atu, but they became, essentially, bug-ware central. 4) For whatever reason, you will be finding MANY mis-identified entries and all manner of deception among the offered downloads and their purported quality. If you want to mess with all that, be my guest.

Unless you are paying for the tunes - you may end up with a huge fine. It has been in the news recently. A Minnesota woman, Jammie Thomas-Rasset, was fined 1.92 million dollars for sharing 24 songs in June. Joel Tenenbaum was fined 675,000 on Friday for downloading and sharing 30 songs. Boy - I just don't think it is worth it - not to mention the problems you can run into - like RC described. If you have paid a fee to Limewire and think you are in the clear to d/l music without paying per song - YOU ARE NOT!! YOu have paid a support fee - to Limewire. You really were ripped off. You are still illegally d/l songs. iTunes works great for the iPod - but not for other types of MP3 players. I only use an iPod now - so I am happy with iTunes.

Sorry, I've been away a bit. To take your comments in order, Kudzu: Well, I'm glad to know it isn't something MS is doing, but there is really no way someone could have gotten access to my computer, unless they came in as a burglar and left no other signs. We have very few guests, and the layout of the house makes it impossible for anyone to enter the computer room without our knowing it. I'm beginning to lean more and more to your second suggestion, that the files came along with something else I downloaded. I did download a video on YouTube a few days ago, and now a search on the site doesn't bring it up anymore, which is strange. DA: I did click to see when some of the files were created. Several were from 2005 and 2006. Do those dates refer to the time they were "created" on my computer (though I do not think I had bought this computer yet in 2005--too lazy to go hunting for the receipt tonight), or to their original creation on someone else's? If it is when they got onto my computer and I just hadn't checked the All Users folder for such things, I am still left with the puzzle of why some got into my personal regular music folder. However, I usually access My Music through the Start menu, but I had gone through My PC>C:\, etc., when I came across this problem. Can it be that the files were there all along, as Gndms suggested, and I just never happened to notice them? (In that case, I will owe everyone an apology for taking your time, and also feel like the boy who cried wolf--though unintentionally!) So long as nothing sinister is going on, I will be content. RavenCajun: I ran scans as you suggested and all seems well there. However, yesterday I checked the History section of MSE and found this: But it wouldn't have anything to do with the strange files, would it? I am wondering how it "exploits" the computer and whether or not it did any exploiting of mine before it was detected and removed. This is the first time MSE has found anything "severe." Up till now, it has always been just cookies. Didn't find any suspicious log-on activity. RUBotted found nothing, too, but thanks for telling me about it; I have Bookmarked the site for future reference. When I checked the administrative tools and event viewer, there was a great long list of events listed as warnings, dating back to April of 2006, which I am assuming was when I bought the PC. All those "warnings" are scary. Can you tell me what they mean? Should I be doing something about them? Thank you all so much for helping me. Just as a final touch for my peace of mind, I am going to run Kaspersky's scan now.

If you are looking for e-mails with music, have you tried Stationery Heaven? They have great stationery for downloading, and most, if not all, have music.

Just be careful there - you can easily pick up viruses and other nasty things. Not worth it IMO.

Don't use LimeWire, KaZaa, and others like that. D/L music from them is illegal - you can do it, but you also run the risk of getting caught and paying HUGE fines - in addition to getting viruses on your computer.

Also, make sure the person you are sending the email wants music in it.

I am on dialup and if someone attached an MP3 to the email, it would take forever to come in - up to an hour. If you attaching a MIDI that doesn't take as long, but is annoying (to me anyway :) )

You can find some free MIDI site - just search for "free MIDI"

You can do a search for "free midi files" and find lots of them. IMHO they are the best for including in e-mails.

I use Limewire quite often but the files (MP3) I download are much too large to include in an e-mail.

You need to be very, very careful with websites like Limewire. Sharing or downloading copyrighted files is illegal.

This is from Limewire's Terms of Service:

"LimeWire Users
LimeWire is legal software, but it is illegal for you to use LimeWire to share copyrighted files without permission. Purchasing LimeWire PRO does not constitute a license for obtaining or distributing unauthorized files. When you download LimeWire software from www.limewire.com, you agree to refrain from using LimeWire for the purpose of copyright infringement.

Sharing files in your Library
Everything you share with LimeWire becomes public and trackable. To check which files you're sharing, open LimeWire and click on "Shared Files" in the upper-left directory. Clicking on the folders (and sub-folders) will show the files you're sharing. To use LimeWire legally, you must have the owner's permission to share every file in your Library on the Gnutella network. For example, music and movies from major labels and movie studios are copyrighted, and you do not have permission to share these files (even if you bought them)."

Here's the MIDI site I've been using for years.

Since I don't use Kazaa anymore, I can often Google mp3 songs that I want. That's having a particular song in mind each time.

Do you have a ripping software to get songs off your CDs? MediaPlayer will rip for you, but then you'll need software to convert the audioCD or wav file to mp3 format. There are lots of free conversion programs on the internet. Most are trial versions but fully functional for x amount of time. Plus, there are ripping programs that also convert.

Gosh, I can't believe dialup would take an hour to load a 3mg or 4mg email. I really believe they do something to slow the connection way down. Last time I used dialup was about a year ago at my neighbor's house. It was INSANE! Very funny since it was not AT ALL nearly as bad as that when dialup was all there was. Nothing I ever did was really all that bad when I had dialup, and I downloaded music all the time back then from Napster. I think they just want to frustrate people into getting DSL or high speed.

I have an email full of music for IncrediMail. There are loads of songs of all different kinds of music. I will forward it to you if you wish. Just email me writerightprint at aol dot com.

If you don't have IncrediMail, there is a way to convert the music files for Outlook and Outlook Express. I don't know how to convert them, but you might want to check it out.
