How big was YOUR bird??????

In todays Minneapolis paper was an item about some people who roasted a.......72 Lb !!! Turkey. I wish I could post pictures, I would scan the photo and post it. It is huge. I told DH maybe some one was mistaken and it was an ostrich.LOL Dottie

You'd need a BIG oven for that!!! My SIL did a 25 lb. turkey and I thought that was huge!

Only 22 lbs this year. Eleven adults and three kids ate almost the whole thing.

I started putting seed out for the birds in the winter only. But they hung around expectantly in the spring, so I've continued feeding year-round, adding a couple bird baths. The entire area behind our tall, wooden fence has grown tall and wild - it's an unmaintained strip of "public utilities" land, and has become a natural habitat for birds (and other critters). So we have our backyard and gardens and the birds come and go from behind the fenced area. I bought an Audubon bird field book and enjoy looking up new visitors. There's always a new bird to id. Over the years I've added many suet feeders that attract all kinds of woodpeckers, nuthatches, and sapsuckers. All of the other "regulars" enjoy the suet occasionally, too, and all of them eat from the suet feeders year-round, not just in the winter. The biggest attraction, though, comes by way of everyone's favorite food that I now put out regularly on the deck rail - at least all the insect eaters: I buy inexpensive jars of dry-roasted, UNSALTED, peanuts. I run them through my food processor until they are crumbly. I have yet to see a bird that doesn't come and gobble them up, including the woodpeckers and especially the cardinals. We have hundreds of cardinals. The best part is in the spring, when the mother birds cram as much crumbled up peanuts as they can into their beaks and fly off to feed their babies, then come right back for more. This goes on all day and it makes me feel good that so many babies are being well fed. We've had several bluebird and mockingbird families come to our deck, as the young'uns grow and learn to fly. Later in summer, the visits pare way down, so I know they're on their own now as far as feeding themselves with insects or whatever they'd eat naturally. They don't come around much at all during the summer. It's really fun and interesting - I didn't start this expecting to be a "birder", but I guess that's what's happened. During the early winter, we have many birds stop by that aren't usually seen in NC, on their winter migrations to someplace warmer. Sorry for the long post!

OK, I had to google LBJs and found out that's an acronym for "little brown jobs" or little sparrow-type birds you don't care to identify! Wow, learn something new every day, huh? I just wanted to add that when I was a teen, I was given a baby magpie by a neighbor who had "rescued" it when it was out of the nest. It probably was fine, but he brought it to me. I raised it and it was a fun pet! It learned to talk at three months old and said things like Here, kitty, kitty! pretty boy, good boy, hello, hey!, quit that, stop that, etc. Those last phrases were learned because my mother would yell at him to stop when he was raking his beak across the cage wires. Anyway, I had planned to let him go when he was grown, but the thought of him sitting on someone's back porch, eating their cat food and saying "Here kitty, kitty!" was a little frightening! I did feed him dry cat foot, and he thrived on it. Anyway, I kept him about four years and gave him to a friend. He lived about eight years, which is their normal lifespan. One of the funnest things was to have a wild bird sitting on my shoulder while I rode my bike around the neighborhood. Sure got a lot of funny looks!

I almost posted an observation along these lines several weeks ago. In a one-week span I noticed three separate cowbird chicks all being attended to by blue-grey gnatcatchers. There was always a single cb chick to each set of birds, and never any sign of additional BGGC chicks vying for the food. In that same time span I also noticed a CBchick being fed by a pair of indigo buntings. It's not hard to find them as they are very raucous and conspicuous. I am curious how the numbers and densities of birds most typically affected by CB predations are doing here because we have hordes of cowbirds, yet I always hear/see vireos and thrushes and others that are prime targets for parasitism. I check my nest boxes regularly and destroy any CB eggs in the hopes that at least my small wooded acreage can better sustain songbirds in a time of decline, but we live in farmland with any remaining wooded areas being highly fragmented. Flocks of winter 'blackbirds' are usually groupings of redwings, starlings, grackles and cowbirds fattened up on a steady and readily available farmland diet. I only wonder what our songbird demographics will do in the next few decades.

we are going to Son's house this year, but I'll always remember.....The Year Of The Bird!! Sometime in the 80's. Hubs and two sons all worked at the same company. We were going to have the whole family to our place for Thanksgiving, so when I told them I bought a big 22 pounder, they gave me a funny look and said, we each get a bird from work! Luckily we had a big freezer, then at the company Christmas party, the two sons each won a turkey. We ended up giving three of them away to some families. And I'm not even fond of turkey. LOL

For reasons unknown to me, I bought & cooked a 27-lb bird for me and hubby. I think it was pure habit.

I try to get the smallest I can find, only about 12.5 this year. There is only the 3 of us (4 if counting the dog which eats as much as me!) And after leftovers on Sunday, I will still have plenty to do creative things with. I always freeze what is left for about a month so don't get so tired of it.

To me anything under 16 pounds is all bones, not alot of meat.
We had 7 people, 21 pound turkey, biggest I could find without special order. We only have enough for one more meal for hubs and I a couple of sandwiches and then the soup with the carcass. NO leftovers for the kids to take home, it will all get used. They took home the side dishes though as we had WAY too many of those.

19 lbs. We had a lot of leftovers, but I won't get one under 16 lbs because I don't want to risk getting a hen.

ours was 19 pounds, for two people. :) We LOVE left over turkey!

19.6 lbs. here. We had 16 people. 4 were under 12. I had a lot left over, because we had so many snacks first. Nobody was really hungry.

Bought the smallest I could find: 8 pounds. It was on special for .59 (cents) a pound. So for $5.62 I had a huge dinner and LOTS of leftovers.

Maybe a couple pounds or so. We bought an already cooked turkey breast from Safeway. Don't want alot of leftovers.
We're leaving for Vegas tomorrow.

Twelve pounds, the biggest I ever cooked was 27. Just the 4 of us,there's plenty left over.

We just bought a breast - about 5 lbs. There were only five of us - basically no leftovers.

12 lbs for the 2 of us, lots and lots of leftovers. dh insisted on trying publix family turkey dinner this time and it was blah... he was tired of spending all day cooking for just the 2 of us usually. not to mention, the last 2 times we did the turkey on the grill rotisserie and the turkeys were a bit too heavy at 12 lbs lol so it didn't work out well...too hard to find small birds. sooo now we will be going back to baking our turkey, MY WAY LOL. ~ liz

22.5 # for us .There were 9 of us ,we also served a spiral ham,and ds brought over a prime rib as well.Everyone went home with leftovers and we also still have some as well.Dh will probably make turkey salad tomorrow.

1 was 22 lbs and one was 22 lbs plus a spiral cut ham. We had about 25 here and mostly were grown men! So we did have leftovers but not very many! STacy

The turkey was just under 20 pounds. It fed 10 of us and didn't leave much for leftovers either!
