Wisconsin cheese?

We used to belong to a cheese "club". Every month or so we'd pick a cheese and every one was delicious. Once Harry bought a huge round and I thought we'd never be able to eat all of it, but it was so good and creamy we managed :-)

I've been googling "wisconsin cheese clubs" but I'm not getting any results. I click on the sites but they aren't coming up.

So, Wisconsin friends, do you have any good ideas for this?

Try Wisconsin Cheese Mart or Wisconsin Specialty Cheese - just run those together and add the dot com.

I think Ruthie posted a link to Williams Sonoma page recently. First thing I commented on was the Cheese of the Month Club! lol

I live right at the top (almost) of lake Winnebago (you know, the BIG lake in WI), just on the left side of the lake, but I would LOVE to have people over in the spring or I would also be happy to go to MN, since I have a friend in that area. I just think it would be fun to do something like this in the spring. Kelly, Mike and Gabi, your welcome any time. (everyone else is too :) I will even throw in some of that delicious Wisconsin cheese to temp others if I need to! Mike, did you say you knew someone in Wisconsin that sold from their home? Tell me where so I can see if she wants to adopt a slightly "older" child!

From your description, it sounds like you have Galeux d'Eysines. It's a great one for baking. This one is listed in the Seed Savers catalog. They mention that is a sure seller for farm and market stands. It's best harvested before overly mature because the warts continue to grow and will cover the entire fruit. Many of our customers like these unique pumpkins as a table centerpiece. This is a good one from which to save seeds for sure.

Everyone is invited to come to my house on June 21 for our 5th anniversary party! Finished the colonoscopy this morning, and then learned that the plumber is still out of town and unavailable, and so we hired a different one, as we do not want to wait another week without a kitchen sink. Enough is enough! It is probably costing us a bit more for the new plumber (the first one never gave us a written quote or contract, but he's two doors down from us), but I feel that he is doing a competent job. After not having a sink for 10 days and then having a colonoscopy, my patience for waiting had run out! I will be very happy to be able to cook again this evening, even though we are having a terrible heat spell. I am not up for shopping, but I don't think we need anything, and I still have all the frozen leftovers that we never ate. Saturday we installed my new bathroom faucet (to go with the new shower controls), and so we had to go to Bouget Brothers in Santa Monica to find a brass coupling (Afterwards we had lunch on Sawtelle at a new Vietnamese restaurant). We first went to B&B Hardware in Mar Vista, but they are going out of business and are not restocking and were out of what we wanted. I am sad to see B&B go - when I lived in Culver City and Venice (from 1989-2009) I went there a lot and seldom bothered to go to Home Depot. Now, we are only a mile from a HD and go there a lot, but they did not have brass couplings, and I would not settle for galvanized steel. Here's a picture of the bathtub faucet:

L2C46, now you're talkin', SAILBOATS, etc. is one of the great things Chicago has to offer (SOME of the year, lol!). I adore the Shedd Aquarium, especially the architecture and the marine mammal exhibit/show. The whole thing is a replica of the Pacific NW habitat, very cool. And I love the other three museums, the Art Institute and the Museum of Natural History and Science and Industry. Best I've ever been to and I've been to all the NYC ones and Berlin and LA and Philly's museums. Check out Indiana Dunes while the weather is still nice, and the historic farmstead there. It's probably a good hour from you, but well worth the trip. I lived outside of Chicago for the majority of my life, (In MI, but Chicago was THE place to go) and I have a close friend living in Evanston. My people were from the south side, that's where they emigrated to from Russia, but later moved to Skokie when they got prosperous. As for clothes, the key is LAYERS! I'm partial to the good stuff, it wears well, like gortex and other waterproof coatings for windbreakers (always with a hood because you never know!). Then wool for sweaters and coats, along with down and polartec or thinsulate. Mix and match. Silk and cotton for the longjohns, at least on the inside. There are nice boots but they are pricey, but you will not regret it. I have a nice wool lined leather pair, a heavy duty thigh high pair, and a pair with rubber bottoms for slush and mud season. Don't skimp on the soles, and you want SEWN uppers to the soles, will not come unglued with all the wetness. IMHO, a good set of foot gear is the most important winter survival and ENJOYMENT accessory. If my feet aren't happy the rest of me isn't happy! And a good hood. To heck with hat hair, I want to be comfortable! My friends call me Nanook of the North! But I can go outside and enjoy myself ANY TIME! The secret is to accept it, EMBRACE it!

There's a website for a catalog holiday company called Figi's at figis.com (pronounced "fig-eez"...rhymes with piggies). I don't know if they have a cheese-of-the-month but they might have several Wisconsin cheeses. There's also Mullin's Cheese in Knowlton, WI, that makes heavenly cheeses, but I just checked their website and they don't ship cheese. Also try wisconsinmade.com and wisconsincheeseman.com, just two names that came up when I Googled "Wisconsin cheese of the month club". Good luck!

This was pre-internet and when you got your cheese you got a new catalog. It wasn't any of the big companies and it didn't come wrapped pretty--you just got delicious, creamy cheese. It was kind of like the wine-of-the month club. We did that one, too until FL banned shipping alcohol into the state. I think that switched back, too, though.

I was just craving some good cheese, I guess.

Patti--I hope you realize I was kidding about the Wisconsin cheese VS Calif Cheese. And one of mine favorite is Tilamock from Oregon. By the way they have cheese packages too.

Marie - this will make you laugh. I work in a law office. A gal called a few years ago and wanted to "sue the people who make milk" I asked her what her injuries were, "every time I drink milk, I get pimples". I managed to not laugh out loud, but it kept running through my head, "Well, which happy cow from California would you like to sue?"

I love cheddar. the sharper the better. Last year there was a contest for the best Wisconsin cheddar. A company named "Macadam" won. I also think "Cabot" is very good. In my Williams-Sonoma catalog, Cabot cheddar is advertised as a great Christmas gift. One year I assembled cheese assortments as gifts. My MIL (Strega Nonna) loked at her cheeses, saw one dated for February of the next year, mis-read the date and screamed out "This cheese is expired." I could never satisfy her! I should have yelled back "Your eyeglasses are expired!"

I think California cheese made from happy cows is good, too, Marie.
(And I am fourth generation Californian.)
But, after stopping at the cheese factory in Tillamook, OR, I like it as well.
We stopped on our way out of Wisconsin once and tasted some good Wisconsin cheese.
But usually I buy California cheese.
Sorry I wasn't able to help you with the cheese club.

I love sharp Cheddar too.. and my favorite is the "uncommonly sharp cheddar by Cabot".. it is to die for... and I get a chunk of it nearly every time I go to WalMart..

Maybe visit Canada sometime - a lotta good cheeses originate there ...

... but I wouldn't want to club ya over the head with them.

Do you want a cheese of the month or just a place that you can order cheese made in Wisconsin? I know lots of places and I think they all have their own specialities. Are you looking for a particular kind?

Swiss Colony is located in Monroe Wisconsin and sells many Wisconsin cheeses.

Cabot is a great sharp aged cheddar and I can buy it at Wal-Mart or the wholesale clubs. We love cheese too (like we need to be eating the stuff) but anywho......A wonderful creamy blue is among our favorites and I went cheese shopping at our local cheese shop and he had our favorite blue on sale so I bought the whole $60 dollar block.......
