The Kitchen Table

Please help me choose a rug shape/size

Now I need to decide on the size and shape of the area rug for our office.

I could use an 8' round rug; it end right in front of the bookcase and the recliner and end table would sit on it. It would fill the area from in front of the closet and past the window. Or I could use an 8x10 oblong rug that will fill most of the room except the entry and where the computer sits. Again, the bookcase(s) would not sit on this rug, but the front legs of the chest would. What do you think?

Either rug would basically fill this area...

It won't be an expensive rug, but I'm thinking of either an oriental-type rug, or a modern color-block look in beiges and reds and black.

What is the overall size of the room?

My husband's study is 12 x 15 and we finally decided to use a smaller rectangular Oriental rug and put it down on the diagonal. It did a great job of breaking up all those angles and it makes the room look larger.

The room is small. 10' wide and 12'3" long with a 45-degree notch in the southeast corner for the 30" wide door.

Thanks, prairiedawn. My style actually is more of a rustic/modern country style rather than traditional, although I have a mix of everything! I used BM Baby Turtle in the powder room and laundry room, which are adjacent to the foyer, SW Artifact in the great room, which is just beyond the foyer, and SW Believable Buff and Camelback throughout the rest of the house. roseabby, I spoke to the salesman at Macys and he also mentioned a 2'6" runner may be out of scale. The problem is I do NOT want to cover up most of the wood flooring. Would a smaller area rug placed horizontally across the front doors, rather than a larger run placed vertically in the room, look strange? The two doors are 6' wide and the entire wood entry is approx. 10' wide.

Good plan. Your traditional rug is very nice and I would keep it too. Oh, in fact, I have around 5 rugs in storage now. Beautiful wool traditional rugs but they just don't fit in our new home. I may get a runner out though soon! Good luck and let us know how it works. One tip. If you can order a small one, like 2x3 (I forget if that size is available or not) first. You can check and make sure you like the colors etc. Then if it doesn't work, easy to send back. If it works most can use small rugs for a rug by a door, etc. Then order the size you need.

Is there an eat in kitchen or would the dining space be the all-the-time eating space? I like Judy's layout if there is another more casual eating area (breakfast/lunch). traipsing across living space (from kitchen) for every meal doesn't seem functional. That said, walking into your fireplace area as a LR isn't ideal either. I think it could have 2 chairs and be cozy but the TV and living space would have to be across the way. It's a beautiful looking home.

Agree on the oddity of rugs in a kitchen. I was told ages ago a rug at outside doors really keeps the dirt tracked in, down. We are shoeless inside but still there are always THOSE TIMES. I also have a highly cushioned mat in front of my sink. I stand there for long periods of time certain times of the year and find it very helpful on my knees and hips.

I like the idea of a round or oval rug. It "softens' the corners in a room.

I was watching a decorating show the other day and they said a rug should always be touched by several pieces of furniture and never be just "floating"... so I'd buy the size rug that would go under more furniture pieces.

Are you still thinking of buying from Decorator's Outlet? Check the 80% off rug section.. you might find something you like there and you can save all kinds of $$$. Your office is looking great BTW.

Your office is a beautiful room. I think I'd go with either an oval or rectangle rug.
