First I lost while on my long bike ride, then I lost more from divorce stress.

Neither will work for most, but did a marvelous job for me.

Congratulations, that's a great first step toward 'losing it'. For me, a couple of things that helped was to make sure to drink all my water every day and to not allow myself to get TOO hungry. I take an apple and a bottle of water with me in the car almost everywhere I go. That way, I'm not tempted to grab something quick and full of calories because I'm so hungry. Thanks for sharing, you may be the inspiration some of us need to stick with it!

I think a weekly thread here is a good idea. I've posted a couple times over at the diet forum, but found that they don't 'like' any ideas about weight loss that aren't what they are already talking about.. so I don't post there anymore.

I am going to start a low carb diet (Fat to Skinny Fast and Easy) after the Thanksgiving holiday. I've had limited success on low carb in the past, but decided to try this particular diet because they have a good forum with lots of support and recipes. I hope it works and that I can make it a way of life cause I have about 50 lbs I'd like to lose (and keep off this time).

Good idea Janine, I will join in. I am struggling to lose 30+ more pounds (already lost 35) and need encouragement and ideas. I would rather chat and commiserate with KT buddies. Thank you for thinking of the idea.

"After" you lose weight, it is still hard...it will "always" be hard. Lydia, I don't agree with you on "one" thing...if you are dedicated to losing weight....don't wait until "after" Thanksgiving...you can put on a lot of weight between now and the day after Thanksgiving. You can still have a nice Thanksgiving and still work at losing weight. We had a great meeting about this at Weight Watchers last week. And...by the way..they are going to change the WW Program some later this month...Let's "do" check in every week...or some of the days between, too....good idea

I agree with maybee, if you need to splurge on Thanksgiving Day then by all means do it but you can lose a lot of weight between now and then and I believe that there is no time like the present to get set in your ways. Good Luck and if you want to post on Mondays that's fine with me. I'm doing a weight loss thing at the moment and Mondays are my weigh in day.

Lydia, I'm not familiar with that diet (and I must admit I tend to be suspicious of anything labeled "fast and easy"), but I've had a lot of experience with low-carb living. Dr. Atkins was my physician in NYC, and many years later I lost almost 50 lbs. eating low carb and low saturated fat. I still don't eat sugar, but I know I'm overdoing the fruit these days. I'm trying to find a balance. But let me know if I can be helpful!

Thanks all, I didn't even think to check out the diet forum. I don't post a lot (yet) and only read this forum. I figured since recipes/cooking were talked about here, why not our 'weight managment'?

On of my main problems is my hubby, who is also overweight, and constantly brings snacks home, or wants to go out to eat, and I have zero will-power. My one weakness is coke, but I like Nestea Iced tea with Splenda, so it is my coke replacement on Survivor night or a movie night.
He does encourage me and says he will start up on the treadmill when he gets back in a month - he's going away for work and this is why I thought it was a good time to get started on WW :o)

I'm starting the diet in 2 weeks so I can make out meal and shopping lists and use up baking mixes and other items that I already have that aren't low carb. I don't want to stress over the family Thanksgiving meal... the diet I am starting you need to stay at or under 20 carbs a day which would be a pretty dismal Thanksgiving. lol

I really am a seasoned dieter and I have killer willpower.:-) My problem is making the diet a permanent way of life. I've lost 20+ lbs several times and kept it off for about a year, I lost 45 lbs. 7 years ago on The Fat Flush plan and kept it off for almost 2 years. It was too hard to continue on as a WOL though and I was diagnosed with Hashimotos at that time too which hasn't helped matters.

The diet (Fat to Skinny) has excellent reviews on Amazon. Both the author (who lost 100 lbs) and his wife (who lost 70) are very active on the forum I posted above. This low carb diet is a little different because it focuses on sugar in all foods and they help you to come up with replacements for the high carb foods you love.

Janine, I think it's a great idea and I would love to be a part of it. I've been a member of WW since 1998. I have been stuggling to lose my last 12 lbs. My total loss so far is 42 lbs. Currently I am doing this alone because after a few months at WW I start rebelling and stop journaling and counting points. What seems to be working for me is cutting my portions in half. If I go out to dinner, I ask for a take out box when my food arrives and immediately put half in the box for the next day's lunch. I like this plan because I can eat whatever I want and never feel like I'm dieting. Also, once of week I make a big pot of vegetable or minestrone soup (1 point).

My favorite low point/calorie dessert is hot fudge sundae.I take a WW fugde ice cream bar off the stick, in a bowl add fat free cool whip, 1/2 sliced banana (or other fruit), Hershey chocolate syrup (warmed). The whole thing is 3 points and it's sooooo satisfying.

I think a weekly post would be good! I joined WW a few weeks ago, and am so far doing okay (lost 7.8 lbs) The one thing that works for me is knowing that weigh is a certain day. I am very competitive so knowing that I have to be accountable that day works for me. I still "cheat" but try to up my exercise or cut down on snacks. I really try to just keep busy or distract myself during the day to help the mindless eating!

janine-my DH is the opposite! He is super tall and skinny and LOVES to eat! (I could be a BILLIONAIRE if we could bottle his metabolism!!) Meats and Breads and potatoes! HE does eat veggies, but large portions and I have very little willpower too when I see those carbs!

Also, my SIL was addicted to Coke and now she drinks Coke Zero.

I think it's a great idea. I've been trying to lose some weight but my social schedule makes it very difficult. Last week I had a luncheon on Monday, Mexican Train at my house (with all the snacks) Monday night, a cocktail party on Wednesday, a buffet dinner on Thursday and my dinner party on Saturday. This week I started with dinner tonight at one of the finest restaurants in town. My stock broker was picking up the tab so it was everything from soup to nuts. Wednesday is a luncheon, Saturday another dinner party and Sunday is Wine and Cheese party. Then there is Thanksgiving and December I have a host of luncheons and a couple of dinners. If I can just maintain until January, I've got it made. I will be checking in on Mondays. Perhaps that will at least keep me conscious of what I'm putting in my mouth.

I'm thinking to just keep "this" post running and checking in from time to time. I go to WW and we weigh on Wednesday...and basically it all comes down to portion control...

My fave snack is a Tootsie Pop. They take a long time to eat and this time of year, the peppermint ones come out in the stores.

I have no trouble eating out...my biggest problem is "closet" snacking and I think that became a part of my life when I was a chubby child.

I started the year a complete physical mess. I could barely function I was so tired and overweight. Then I decided to get a divorce and felt so good that I lost 30 pounds between January and April. Then my divorce stalled and so has my weight loss BUT I haven't gained back the weight. It's so hard because I know all the tricks and rules of losing weight but that means nothing when I can't get in the right place emotionally. At age 41 I can really look back and say with certainly that this is my own personal secret to weight loss - WW worked briefly, I've lost weight here and there with other methods, but the only time I lost weight and kept it off for a significant length of time was when I was working from the inside out.

Of course, I still need to eat less and exercise more to lose weight. I've never had any problem exercising but that isn't going to be the key for most people - eating less is definitely the most important thing.

I keep a journal on an other private board but I will definitely start checking in here too if we keep this thread up.

Yes! start a weekly post. And DO splurge on your
special dinners! But only on those things that you don't
eat a lot of. Like mashed potatoes you can eat
anytime. But maybe not the sweet potato or
cranberry sauce... something that you don't normally
get. AND, through WW, (even though I really knew) I
know portion size. We don't NEED to eat 3 cups of
turkey dressing! LOL a 1/2 cup will do the trick!

dont' deprive your self or your will binge
one day! LOL

moni i sure can attest to the divorce weight loss! it's so easy when cooking for just yourself...i did the "old w/w" plan..yikes compared to the new one it was torture...never ate so much tuna in my life, lol...

My husband seems to be able to eat whatever he wants and stay at a great weight. So he thinks nothing of at 8:00 or 9:00 at night saying "Let's order a pizza". And willpower is NOT my friend! So I too, struggle every day.

I hear of a "new" ww plan, wonder if it will be in Canada also? So far so good for me, the first two days I went over a few points, yesterday I was exact and already planned my meals for today. Made the zero point soup last night, so have a bunch in the fridge for the rest of the week.

I love reading your opinions and tips, it helps knowing someone may have the same problems and concerns.

I know most of you still have Thanksgiving to get through, that's always hard. I hope to be down enough at Christmas so that I still can indulge a bit on my favs!

PS here's the zero point soup recipe, there are lots of different variations but this is the original....I add red peppers for more flavour and skipped the zucchini. I never liked cabbage but made this out of curiosity and its really good :o)

A few more things that help me: Vitamuffins, they are really good and only 1 point. They can be found in the frozen section of most major grocery chains. Also, Western Bagel makes several different varieties that are only 1 point for regular sized bagel. The label has to say "Alternative", otherwise you are buying their high point bagel. Low point option is not available in most stores, but they have a website.

When my DH passed away, I lost 100 lbs in a short time..He was the one to say lets go out or lets get a pizza, if I lost five pounds he would bring an apple turnover and I gained it right back. After saying all of that, I'd rather be fat and happy than skinney and sad to where I don't want to get out of bed anymore. I miss him so very much.

Weight watchers is good you get hungry just get on your free list.good luck.
