Do You Watch......

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? My uncle took me to it when I was very young. He sat me on his shoulders to watch. It's one of those childhood memories you just never forget. I still try not to miss it. Sometimes I have to watch while cooking but generally most of my preparation is done the day before.

I don't, I usually try to find a movie on TV or watch something I DVR'd, while I cook. That parade has too much chit-chat going on for my tastes.

What a fun childhood memory to have, though, Georgy.

(I should have said my little flat-screen TV was my favorite kitchen gadget! lol)

Sorry for that, Ann. If you go to the Aquarium website, there are many webcams that allow you to see special interest areas live and you can even watch at feeding times in the big tank. The Aquarium is interesting because the foundation of its exhibits began with a vision to highlight the local sea life. (Monterey Bay is a unique environment because of the presence of a very deep canyon/trench close to shore). Over time, they realized they needed to have rotating special exhibits with a bit more razzle dazzle for the general public to want to return repeatedly. Another organization, separately operated and funded almost exclusively by the Packard Foundation, is the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) at Moss Landing. MBARI is a research organization, even receiving some government money, that employs big name scientists to do oceanographic research. It's a lab, not a public attraction, and is only accessible once a year on Open House day. But it's another example of Packard's interest in science and devotion to the greater good.

I cut my cable, so after watching the news (I have an indoor antenna that picks up all my big network stations), I switch to Netflix or Acorn TV (British shows). Fairly new on Netflix, I loved Ozark and Wanted. On Acorn TV, I've watched Australian TV, such as A Place to Call Home, Crownies, Janet King, and now Jack Irish -- all with Marta Dusseldorf. I finished watching George Gently and Doc Martin. A few of these, I had started watching on PBS, but now don't have to wait until they've finished in Britain before airing on my local PBS.

My husband and I have a TV den upstairs next to our bedroom (designated a small bedroom), and it's great. I absolutely did not want a TV in the living room because it would be in the way, we don't do TV as a social activity, and it would be unsightly and anachronistic in our Victorian AF main floor. We also did not want a TV in the bedroom because we've just never been into that and it's terrible for sleep hygiene. My aunt and uncle had a bedroom TV for ages but ditched it when they moved to their new house. Having the TV den upstairs near our bedroom has been great - you can retire to upstairs and watch TV/play video games before bed but not IN bed. And we'll stick with one TV. There are enough old coax cables on our house to put a TV in every room (previous owner was obsessed with TV, I guess?) but I couldn't imagine. I don't even like TV that much.

I record Jeopardy and was a few episodes behind when I saw the title of this thread, so I had to binge it so that I could read the thread! I would have loved to see an episode with Spike! While I'm sorry to see Amy go, she had an amazing run, and the show really is more interesting when there's more competition.

Yes, I do. Used to watch it with my youngest daughter.... but now, watch it solo. Not as much fun that way.

No, do not watch much daytime television, even if it is a holiday. Too busy and don't want all that noise going on.

Moni, I agree. Not as much fun as watching with the kids.

Glenda, when I was in High School our High School band marched in the parade also. I wasn't in the band, but I remember being so proud that my school band was marching. I can imagine how proud you were.

Always. I watch to see all the balloons, and always see the arrival of Santa Claus at the end. One year, I even knew 2 people who were IN the parade. I worked with a woman named Betsy and her husband was an executive with Macy's. Their 2 daughters dressed up as clowns and marched in the official parade. I once went to the St Patricks Day parade and it was awful-too crowded and I'm short. I needed to find a bathroom and there were no hotels or stores nearby, so I went into a bar. They insisted I buy a drink, so I bought a Seven Up and left it at the bar. All around terrible experience. Never again.

No...I grew up attending, and now just watch, the oldest Thanksgiving day parade in the US. Macy's copied the idea in 1924.

When the band flew to NY, they flew on two separate flights. So the whole band would not be on one flight.

I spied DS as they stopped to perfrom in front of Macy's.

They had lots of things to do before returning home.

I grew up attending, too. We mostly watched from a friend's office on Fifth Avenue--great view! These days I usually have it on in the background in the kitchen. I rarely get to see any of it, but it's a friendly sound.

What a wonderful memory, Georgysmom!

For years and years we did a bus trip to NYC for Thanksgiving, after the parade we checked into the hotel and that evening we had our turkey dinner in one of the Hudson Suites atop the World Trade Center. I've not been back up there for the holiday for over 20 years but I loved the excitement of the city over that holiday.

We always had it on while Thanksgiving dinner was cooking when I was a kid. Just the mention of it brings back those memories. Mom was in the kitchen, and so were we girls, part time :-) My two oldest sisters are(were) several years older and married by the time I was 7 or 8 and everyone would be coming for dinner. I can smell the turkey cooking now. Wonderful, happy memories.

We usually watch part of it even now.

My daughter and son-in-law went to it in person last year and plan to again this year.

I just remembered why I dont watch it anymore.
Tried to this morning . Too much personalities and special events in front of the camera. I like to see the floats and hear the bands and hear who the different schools and org are that participate but am getting so tired of celebrities etc IMHO
I think HGTV still does the Rose Parade on New Years Day with a minimum of "specials"
