Lake effect misery? The guru's "warmer" will come from cranking up their furnaces.

Basing it on the single digits in our area this morning, it can hardly help but be warmer.

It has been below freezing for 5 days, forecast for this weekend is mid-40s and rain. No where for that rain to go, the ground is frozen.

The electronic sign on a local business has it reading in both Celcius and Fahrenheit. It's currently 17F

I don't know how the Farmer's Almanac does it, but I reluctantly side with them this year. Our average daytime temp this time of year is in the 50's, but today our high is 23. Tonight it's supposed to go down to 11, with wind chills below zero.

I'm afraid it's going to be a long, cold winter.

If a Farmer's Almanac prediction says either Above Average or Below Average, they're going to be right about half of the time. And they'll often be right for some stretch of consecutive years.

Although it is bitter cold....breaking all records for this date...I am so sorry for the areas that are having those huge amounts of snow. I hope you all stay safe and warm! Blessings to you.

I heard on the news that Buffalo is expecting 70 inches. For them, and for the other areas with massive snowfall, I worry about what will happen when it melts--which it is likely to do rapidly and soon, triggering floods.

Actually, there is some correlation between sun spots and weather. Sun spots seem to peak on a 11 yr and 22yr cycles. We are coming out of a quiet period. Sun spot activity has picked up during the past year.

I spent the first 38 years of my life living in NE OH with lake effect ugly cold winds. I feel for all of you going through the brutal winters (I have 4 siblings still there -- they ALL want to leave!)

They were reporting 8 feet of snow (2.5 metres), this morning - and more to come.

Not my idea of a good time ... except to be indoors.

I tell folks that I meet that one of the advantages of retirement is that, when one looks out the window at a snowy morning, being driven around by a substantial wind ...

... that one can say, "Oh, well ... I don't need to go anywhere, today, anyway".

It's to be warm(er) weather by the weekend.

I'd be worried about my roof caving in under all that snow, then rain that will turn to ice on top of the snow. Yet, all the talk is about getting the football stadium cleared in time!
