Carlos, I am amazed at how many iris you have growing on a city lot. It must be a very large lot. You have many on those lists to add to your Schreiner's collection. I also see that you have a large number of Walter Moores iris. I am also a collection of Moores iris and also have a good collection of the older Schreiner's iris. I plan in the near future to get all my Schreiner's and Moores' iris into their own areas. Now they are growing in various iris areas. I have a collection of the Dykes Metal winners. At least I have something growing under all the names. I am not sure anyone knows the true ID of some of the older Dykes winners. I have several different older Dykes iris growing under the same name. I have 20 acres of which 14 could be used to grow iris if I need the space. I have several iris areas that may cover about 2 acres all together. I have several mass planting of older iris(Quaker Lady, New Snow, Wabash, Shah Jehan, Cardinal, Indian Chief). I started with iris 5 years ago and am just now getting enough material to arrange it into different gardens. Lee Mincy

EG, I have RLS and it's extremely annoying. We don't smoke any more, I quit about ten years ago and the husband hasn't smoked since way back in the 70s, but he snores and makes all those....ahem....OTHER noises that old men make, and has to get up eleventy-zillion times a night to go to the bathroom. I, on the other hand, nap on and off all night and the only way I seemed to get any sleep was to have the TV going, turned really low. That kept him awake. We finally decided we sleep better alone and he moved to the spare bedroom. Of course, we're old ferts so sleep is more important to us than some other things might be *g*. Now we have the two puppies, who have decided they like sleeping with me at night and napping with Grandpa in the afternoon. They're small, but boy are they bed hogs! They want to cuddle up close, and they are so darned warm I'm sweating half the night. I bought some more 2x6x8' lumber today, over Mr. Husband's dead body. He just doesn't get the love of gardening. Anyway, I'll be out constructing a couple of new beds as soon as it cools down tonight. I've decided to only build three, two for raspberries and one for asparagus. I have about ten 4x4x5' fence posts from the old fence, so I thought maybe I'd use those for the strawberry bed. Maybe build two beds about 4'x4' each instead of one 8-foot bed. I think I have enough scrap lumber to make them tiered, which would be nice. So it is clear from scientific studies that physiologically, anatomically, and instinctively, man is perfectly suited to a diet for fruit, vegetables, nuts, and grains. And plenty of carrion, although our delicate modern minds don't want to think about that. Quite a few archaeological sites of extremely early human habitations (2.5-1.8 million years ago, Homo habilis and Homo erectus) have yielded bones showing marks of human teeth made AFTER marks made by teeth of other species, as well as marks of early stone tools (and the presence of such tools, often broken and so discarded) indicating dissection of those animals. Analysis of human coprolites, or what would politely be described as fossilized dung, from Homo erectus sites already shows evidence of extensive meat consumption (actually coprolites are really nifty once you get over the ick factor), and human-made stone tools purely for the use of hunting, such as spear tips, first appear approximately 1.5 million years ago. That doesn't even allow for animals intentionally killed by such things as thrown stones, wooden or unmodified-bone implements such as clubs or fish gorges made from thorns, trapping, hand-catching (such as fish "tickling", egg collecting, or hunting for animal dens to catch extremely young animals), as well as the "lucky find" of an animal that died of natural causes. Mollusc shells (snails, clams, oysters) abound in Paleolithic sites located near water. As for the "impossibility" of eating raw flesh "without the use of a knife and fork", sorry Jen, but that's outright bunk. Hunter-gatherer tribes (what few survive Western, well, let's call a spade a spade, invasion and habitat destruction) do still do so - two of the anthropologists I studied under at university had spent many years in the Fifties, Sixties, and Seventies living with hunter-gatherer tribes as members of the tribes would live, one specializing in the Kalahari and the other with tribes in New Guinea and the Amazon. A great deal of perfectly edible animal protein does not even require being so much as smacked with a rock, although most of us wimpy Westerners wouldn't consider grubs, insects, raw eggs from wild-bird nests, and such as "edible". For example, Australian Aborigines who enjoy "bush tucker" (their traditional - and we're talking a good 50,000 years here - foods gleaned from the wild) covet a large moth larva called a witchetty grub, which would have most North Americans barfing on their shoes. Even some of the survival training of the American military include obtaining and consuming raw animal protein with one's bare hands, the basic assumption of the course being that one has lost all of one's equipment and being in an situation where building a fire with the old spinning stick technique isn't practical. (Someone I know went through advanced survival training and absolutely loved to tell gross-out stories about his dining adventures.) Personally, I agree with those who say that humans, like many of the other primate species, have evolved to be opportunistic omnivores - we as a species did and will eat pretty much anything we can get our grubby little hands on. It's only in relatively recent times that we've been able to afford to get as picky as we are now. As for whether I wear fur, leather, etc., I used to have a mink collar for my peacoat but it was cut from a coat from the 1960s and just got too tatty to wear, I have had hats and mittens from the skins of rabbits raised as food, and I once had slippers made from moosehide from a moose hunted for food. My leather jacket wore out and I haven't replaced it because they're too expensive. I wear leather shoes (or fabric ones) because plastic ones make my feet stinky and prone to fungi like athlete's foot, and as a previous poster points out, there's the whole petrochemical issue to non-leather shoes (besides fabric and latex rubber, and I dare ya to go through a New England winter in canvas shoes LOL) so you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. IIRC, anti-fur groups typically throw red paint (PETA claims that they do not advocate nor do they sponsor such actions), not blood, on fur-wearers. One reason I have heard straight from the mouth of one of these eco-vandals is that paint cannot be removed without destroying the fur, while blood can be removed fairly easily. (And then there's that minor hypocrisy of using blood to protest killing, unless these folks are donating their own blood to do it...)

Tri-tip was very tender. Phew. Bean/grain salad. Smoked tomatillo, hatch chili salsa from last Fall. Avocado, fresh tomato pico, lettuce for wraps....all served at the table so no plating pics. Hav ing similar tonight. Easy salads already prepped. Made another fresh slaw this morning for variety. Extreme heat wave should break tomorrow . Jas. Pop has been stressed about old age. Mobility. Eyes, hearing. And sure, the covid stress. When we visit i cook for them, DH handles construction chores. I fill their freezer. We have always done that. My older siblings do not cook. They are all retired and have been for a while. My oldest sister is vegan whole food in a blender. She eats for herself and does not help much. My sister that lives nearby can't boil water. My brother and his wife are clueless about what a visit entails. Mother cannot cook for 5-6 people. When they visit it is stressful. Whe we visited after vaccinations, he was over the moon. (we are still working). Just surprised why a box of treats, good treats, is a downer. I think it is distance frustrations. He would like to see us more often. 93 and 92 is old. Pop is just frustrated. Mother is a spitfire in mobility. Adorable and enthusiastic but early dementia. Never expected Ba-Humbug from Pop. 50 bucks once a month is priceless. We are letting him know that mother will be taken care of at home. He thinks he will die before her. They have the investment money or i will pay for it. He has plenty medical adivce. He really could use some elder care emotional support. If i had ten more lives in my 20 already, i would love to help the elderly...just a visit and a voice. An ear.
