Good Morning! ;-)

I just found out yesterday how good all my little plants are doing. Oh, I'm such a proud mommy! I'm just so darn happy that my mom is doing a terrific job with them.

Some of the tomato plants that I thought were goners that were planted a little over 3 weeks ago finally all cam e up. I think that I planted them a hair too deep and told her to water them for one more week and if still nothing then they were just dead and to not worry about them. She blew me away when she said all but 4 or 5 of the cups had at least one tomato plant coming up in them!

The funny thing about that, too, is that I don't remember planting only but one tomato seed per cup! LOL I must be wrong, though, as she said a few of them had 2 plants in them.

Good morning to all. I'm having a terrible morning :-(

I've had way too many zucchinis this year and, trying not to be wasteful, I've prepared all that I couldn't force on my neighbor. I've made chocolate zucchini cakes, zucchini spice cakes, several different recipes of zucchini bread, a zucchini pie, fried zucchini at least once a week, zucchini-potato pancakes (fried). You get the picture. Well, I kept joking that every time I ate this stuff I was getting my daily servings of veggies. I got on the scale this morning, and the joke's on ME. I've gained over 20 pounds since April!

So..no more z-bread, z-cakes, fried-z for me. How sad.

LOL **big grinn** ya and finger nail clippers work good too, LOL to take a really quick clipping, but that was all befor i just went up and knocked on the door and said may i have a clipping of your beautiful plant?? its just so pretty!! of course tabor and hubs go "ohhhhhh GOD" and get so embarrased but i tell ya, you make friends and get to talking about plants and next thing ya know, your like, come over sometime and i'll let you have some of mine, geeze i have TONS of little ones you'll make my hubs happy to get rid of some!! LOL and BOOM you made a new sord of friend. LOL me being the giver i give away tons of plantlings. LOL you wouldnt know it by my back yard though!!! LOL i want crepe myrtle soooo bad!! they smell so good in the spring!! and hydrangea!! oh heck i want the west coast!! its so beautiful!! LOL ** sheepish grinn** LOL also..... you can get seeds from your dried fruit, like the gojio or somthing like that, it doesn't fry them, a guy sent me some, and lo and behold i had tons of seedlings, i don't recommend doing them in the winter!! LOL unless its outside!! LOL ~Medo

LOL i know i havent seen him around, i did email him, he said he's around, but nope, i don't see him, that ol red necks hiding in that corner, taking notes!! probably tryna make this a better place!! LOL then come out and tell us how to do that!! LOL but ya know, its just a little dull here without him!! LOL just a little, **big grinn** he's just an onery one!! i just love that!! **big smile** ya homeschooling was a huge step for me, especially with how tabor gets on my last nerve!! LOL and talla mirrors me, LOL so she squashes my last nerve and grinds it into the ground and all, but now when i feel that, i just calmly hug her and say something nice, that's very hard!! LOL tabor is adhd, his is concentration, so we had him on the different meds, and they just werent working, so finally i said no more!! and when we took her out, it was only fair to take him out, her's was because they wouldn't do anything for a boy biting and picking on her, she was terrified to go back, so we said to h** with it. and tabors was to take him off all the meds. so now it works great!! i give them sleepy time tea, and it calms them down to concentrate. works perfectly!! man i'm good!! LOL **huge smile** going to go get pic of my garden that is growing in now!! LOL ~Medo

Granny - Because of my inability to grow thriving house plants, that is why it took me so long to come around to gardening at all. I'm so glad that SFG gave me the confidence to try. So far, I'm actually doing REALLY well. I just about can't believe I did it all by myself... just had my SFG book handy. ;-) Medo - That is too cool that y'all talk and sing to your plants. I knew how awesome talking to your indoor plants could be, but wasn't totally sure about outside vegetable plants. My daughter was talking to the little plantlings when they first came up, so we just went with it. So far, so good! As for the computer, I did have two different operating systems on one computer once, but I personally think it's best to reformat, like EG said. I also reformat my 4 computer once a year or as needed. My new laptop (the fifth computer) is the only one with Vista, though, so I can't say anything much about that OS yet. Laura - You're hilarious! Welcome to the great OT world, girl. We're very grateful to have ya here. As for the white flies... boy, I sure hope I do not get any flies at all based on vegetable/fruit plants in my house! I don't like spraying any chemicals at all, so I'd have to get a hundred fly swatters or bug zappers or something. EG - Awesome pic!!! You can't even see all the bloody knees of the kids you knocked over to get there or their poor, pathetic cries, either. Great job! I seriously was laughing out loud. I almost dropped on the floor to roll with laughter. ROFL (almost) hahaha Carolyn - I bet that tomater was yummy! It's pretty funny envisioning you 'sneaking' tomatoes into the store. I can see you tippy-toing with them hidden under your shirt. I also see them catching you putting them back under your shirt and the cops throwing handcuffs on ya as you try to explain what happened. "See... MY tomatoes look so much better than THOSE puny, yucky looking things... How on earth can you not believe me? Just LOOK at the difference! I didn't see a new thread yet, so I will just go ahead and add to this one instead. Boy, was I surprised to see all the recently 'activity' at this forum lately. I don't guess that much of it has been about SFG, though, huh? Wow... I just have to say that I read everything here on my vacation today, being it was a down day for us and all. I am very new here as you all know and immediately jumped in to contribute anything that I could. The reason that I did is because you guys really have made me feel welcome. I posted and got responses. I commented to others' threads and saw feedback. No, it wasn't, every single word, all about gardening, but most all of it was. I've learned a lot from you guys and gals and was able to enjoy the experience because of a little 'chit chat' that made it even more fun than it already was. I do understand that not everyone feels the same way, therefore I am very grateful that we've chosen to do a separate thread.... BUT, if someone says something off topic slightly in another thread, they shouldn't have to feel like they're being come down upon. I am new here and could easily have gotten offended as that whole conversation was off topic regarding my vacation to California. If I had been run off, there would be one less person willing to share and contribute to gardening on this thread and others here at GW. Everyone had some great points to make that I read all about. They all were valid points. My point is that it seems everyone is right about their points, but what good is all that if it runs off newbie gardeners? I want this dying art to spread again like wildfire. I want every newbie that comes here to feel as welcome as I first did so they will get the help they seek, friendship, etc., and continue with gardening and teach others to do the same. Maybe I'm crazy, but at minimum I think we should just simply overlook some things that aren't exactly how we would have it, so that everyone feels it's a place for them. We will never all agree. A little off topic now and again should be okay, as long as we all mainly stick to the topics presented. A big tilt in any one direction would be too biased for those that feel differently to feel comfortable. I hope this doesn't sound like rambling as I have it in my head just right and up there it makes a lot of sense. LOL ~Angela

What the? I get busy for a couple of days, and come back to a hooters convention. lol I've just had some bad luck for the past 2 days. I felt like a country song was playing over and over. Got my truck back today(it left me stranded), got some cleaning done before my wife's oldest son rolls into town (from Iraq), and i'm gonna go to visitation tonight on behalf of one of my good friend's early exit in this life. So, hopefully everything is gonna be back to normal (if there ever is normalcy in my life). I missed everyone also.....

Granny - glad to meet your acquaintance. I don't know what i've done to earn the title of "guru", but hopefully I can live up to it. Thanks for joining this group. We need all the help we can get (some more than others...whistleâ«, whistleâ«) Hey, I didn't say any names! Stop hitting me....Anyway, I wish my zucchini would have done better - i've got a pretty serious zucchini deficiency going on right now. But, i've got crookneck out the wazzu. I've gotten 43 so far off of my 4 plants, with at least 20 more to harvest in the next week or so.

To the over-the-shoulder, boulder-holder people - I've got some pretty good models out there now! One of them looks like that 1 boob chick on that funny martial arts movie.hee hee

Anyway, i'm not going anywhere. Somebody's gotta keep the crazy person in line.(You know who i'm talking about)

YEAH!!! EG has returned! Glad to meetcha "in person", EG! Hmmm...were our hooters showing?

Speaking of trucks, I got my Ranger stuck in my back yard while unloading a yard of compost. I had to maneuver it down a 6' wide area between a hedge and a flower garden, through a 6' chain link gate, around the corner and into the back yard. No problem. But do you think I could make the turn to get it back out? No way. Mr. Husband had to cut down half of my lilac tree before we could extract that little truck from the back yard! I'll be hauling the next 2-3 yards of compost from the front driveway by wheelbarrow :-(

That's SOOO cool Angela! Somehow, a garden doesn't feel complete to me without tomatoes. I started a fall stupice, so we'll see if I can make a go of that. It grew three inches this week! There are two of them in the single six inch and I'm going to move them to an earthbox. I know I should clip one, but I just can't seem to make myself do it, it feels so wrong.

EG!! So good to see you. Tell your stepson we said thanks for his hard work.

Granny, have you tried dehydrating those zucchini? I've been dehydrating them for soups, stews, and stir fries for two weeks now. I think a single zucchini plant will be enough for our family, but I'm going to continue to plant two for laying up for the wintertime.

its so nice to see you back! so sorry to hear about your truck and your friend. however, its nice that your son is coming back from iraq!!! i wonder if he was with chuck?? he just got back and he's gonna be with the fort riley division now. i guess he wants to go back. weird. but i guess ok. and i got an email from border tork. i'll put it here. well i betternot. anyhow obama went there for publicity and blew everyone off. i don't know what to think about al this stuff. LOL
i just plant and be happy!! LOL yes, we weman (how in the heck do ya spell that past tense????) are all like that, happy planting, LOL well not all, my mom isn't, not all the time, LOL

I LOVE to see everyone's photos of their gardens! I think I'm overdoing it with the pictures I've been submitting the past couple of days, but the excitement of sharing should wear off before long. Medo, you needed to get more of that girl's head in the picture...I thought you were raising chickens when I first glanced at it!! LOL

carolynp, I have never tried drying zucchini. Actually, the only thing I've ever dried is fruit leather and venison jerky when my kids were still all at home (I raised five of them). I have only been using the veggies fresh, as I have a problem transporting them when we head for Arizona in October. We drive our Ford Ranger, with rabbit cage, one big cooler for bunny's fresh greens and a few perishables from the fridge, suitcases, computer, air compresser, large battery charger...well, you get the picture. No room for food. And this year we'll also have two almost full grown doxies along for the ride. Won't that be fun!

Granny - You need to install a winch on the front of that little truck. That way, you could always pull yourself out, especially if you and the hubs wanted to grab a few cold beers and go mud riding! Woo Doggie! That's so much fun! I'm thinking about having a wet tee shirt contest out at the garden. If I could get MTV to show up - we might have a taping for spring break next year! That'd be hilarious....it would go something like "Alright party people! give it up for Miss Sugar Baby......yeah, BOYEE!"

Carolyn - i'll tell him. I have to stock the fridge up with beer everytime he comes home. I take the cans of beer that he doesn't get to, and stick them up a chicken's butt - and let it sit on the grill for about 2 hours.MMMM...MMMM. Now, that's some good vittles!

Medo - what the? Did you just say doodie? Heh! My stepson is an Army Ranger, that did 3 tours to Iraq, then 1 to Afghanistan, and got out. He now works for Blackwater. It'll be good to see him. The political thing is unbelievable. I think all of them are on some type of controlled substance. You got any veggies in that garden? I think I saw some wildwood flower, but aint real positive about it.LOL

EG, when we're in AZ, we always travel with someone who does have a winch. Last year I tried to drive into an abandoned mine shaft (we estimated it to be about 500 feet deep), hit the brake just as the truck started over the edge. It was teetering with the front right wheel in space and the left rear wheel off the ground, and the guy with the winch hooked on the bumper and pulled it back. Whew, close call! Here's a pic of the Ranger on one of the better roads, we call this a highway!

That little Ranger has been in some unbelievable places. We bought a Jeep last year, but it doesn't perform half as well as the Ford, which is a 4x4 off road model. I think we'll sell the Jeep.

AG - have you tried freezing shredded zukes? I freeze those, along with some shredded carrots and make breads during the winter so that we don't tire of it all at once. (We like to spread out the torture.) Thaw in a colander so as not to soggy things up.

i do have some okra in there and some egg plants. in our new one's we're gonna put some more egg plants, tomato, and some other junk!! LOL they call food!! LOL in with compost, manuer, and lots of paper!! (shredded) so it will be interesting!!
i LOVE baked zuke but all spiced!! and it has to be cut kinda thick, maybe 1/2-1". no getting all the transfats, we use cooking spray. LOL why not slice them and freeze them?? or slice them, bake 10-15 then freeze? i don't know but i think it might last a bit for when your ready to use them?? i've never done that. YET!!!! LOL i'm a rule breaker!! can't ya tell??? LOL ~Medo

p.s. that girl is NOOO chicken that's for sure, more like a pit bull!! LOL now the boy, he's kinda like a chicken, only cuz she beats him up!! LOL

holly-2006 and Medo: Can't freeze them, no way to get them from here to AZ, not enough room in the pickup for another large cooler, and we shut down our freezer here for 6 months. But it's OK, my neighbor is using what I can't, and she's gifting me with jars of zuc relish and pickles.

Granny - if I were you, i'd build a trellis in the back of that ranger, and plant me some zucchini in large containers. That way, they'd always be with you! You could even take em to the drive-in movies. HA! They'd probably enjoy that! You could even take em to Hooters. Hee Hee...Ok, really....that was close on the drive into the mineshaft.Whew! I'll tell my stepson that everyone says "thanks". It's sad, when a soldier doesn't get to come home....

EG, that was mean ;-) After this season, I may never want to even SEE another zucchini. Now, if I could trellis those tomatoes onto the back of the Ranger, well...I'd go for that!

Hooter man? That's funny. Hey Granny, I wish you could transport some of that zucchini my way. I'm really having zucchini withdrawals. I've only got 4 all season from the plants I have.(Because of a drainage problem in that 1 spot) Oh well, on the weekend of the 30th, i'm pulling it all out - and repairing that little problem...

Granny - i'll have to open that link from my other internet source, this one is firewalled to the max. So, you were up for half the night? Did you see any good infommercials? I only got 4 hours of sleep, as usual. The last time I checked the garden was around 1 a.m. I don't recall the song "sinner man"....who did it? I know the song "silent man", by Dream Theater....If you drive off into a mineshaft again, i'm gonna write a song about it. It's gonna be called "Grandma drove her truck into a mineshaft". EG, I had a hard time finding that song (in a recognizable form, LOL)on YouTube, so you'd better appreciate it. "Sinner Man" or "Sinnerman" is an American traditional spiritual song that has been recorded by a number of performers. This one happens to be by The Seekers, probably recorded in the 60s.

I had the Olympics on the entire night, so I saw a lot of swimming!

BTW, I doubt (from what I've read here) the song "Silent Man" would pertain to you. Hee Hee

WOO HOO ROFL!!!! now that was just to good!! LOL ummm i'd say she has you just good!! LOL **big ol grinn** 4 hrs o sleep, sounds like my ol man, never sleeps hardly and when he does, its a hour here and an hour there, i tell him, its that dang nicotene, saying come smoke me baby!! i need you to smoke me!! LOL but, ya know, he just doesn't buy it!! either that or the soda pop sayin drink me!! Hee Hee but nope, he thinks (that was his FIRST problem!! LOL) that its just the sleep pattern thingi. but it'll catch him one of these days. when he can't move around and he's old and decrepid. but last night apparently was my fault, snoring. i'll blame it on his smoke in the bathroom all day!! yep, thats what it was!! LOL

You guys are a total riot! I found myself laughing and giggling many times. I was out really late at Disneyland yesterday, so I wasn't able to catch the rest of this thread until today. I don't have too much time, so I won't comment to everyone individually. Just know that you guys/gals are TOO funny and a really great group. I've found my home.

EG - I'm glad to see you're back... really glad. It's not quite the same here without ya; that's for sure!

Just to let you all know, I may not be able to access the internet on the second half of our trip, but I will catch up when we return home if I don't 'see' you again before then.

its always nice to see a group of people that make us feel at home!@! i love that!! ok, now i have a really, really big problem!! i hope ya'll can help me!! i deleted some stuff from my pc a long time ago. and on it was my cd rom drive aparently, now i can't get her cd to play, or any movies. i don't remember doing this. ummm. can ya'll help me find a site that i can download a driver for free that doesnt have a zip file? and its easy??? LOL i mean monkey easy!!! LOL i use up all of my "brains" on the kiddo's during the day, so i tell the hubs that it hurts to think at night!! LOL HEE HEE HEE!!! LOL ahhhhh and i can't find the dang cd's i made ages ago, but i'm not sure i want the bugs back i had then. LOL ok done now!!! Medo

Medo, I don't know of any driver. What I did when I lost some files that came with my computer was I went to the manufacturer's website and did a search for drivers until I FINALLY found the right file to download. If it is a zipped file, you would have to have a zip program to unzip it, but you can get one of those for free by googling for a "free zip program". I'm sorry that it isn't monkey easy, but hopefully you can recover the driver you need. I know what a pain it can be because we spent a small fortune getting our computer fixed after our toddler deleted some Windows files... the stupid thing might have been cheaper to just a buy a new one, but we needed some files that were on the old one, so we spent our hard-earned money to get it fixed professionally. Uggggggh

Granny - You got me on that one, pretty good....Hmmmm....So, you watched alot of swimming? I bet Michael Phelps feels like Forrest Gump sometimes...."After thayat day, if I was goin' somewhere....I was swim-ming..."

Medo - There are several reasons for my lack of sleep.
1. I get phone calls in the middle of the night from maintenance employees that have problems.
2. I have restless leg syndrome (it sux big time)
3. I sleep with a camel. My wife smokes, and coughs in my face in the middle of the night, usually spitting all over my face in the process. Like I said previously - I sleep with a camel.
4. I have so much brain activity, that it's hard to get it shut down. Really... All these weird things that I have stored in my cerebral hard drive, like - exothermic generation, latent heat of vaporization, coefficient of friction, hexadecimal to binary coded decimal calculations, all kinds of freaky stuff. I've even got the phone number for Nintendo Gameplayers Hotline stuck in my head, and I haven't called it in 20 years. It's 206-885-7529! I even went to a doctor about it! lol. I started telling him all the formulas and numbers stuck in my head, and he just said "hmmm...that's quite interesting". He asked me how I felt, and I told him I felt like Rainman,forrest gump, and scarface all wrapped up into one person. lol. Oh well, it's the OCPD thing....

Angela - Hey girl! Hope you and your family are having a big ol' time. If ya get the opportunity, you gotta get your picture taken with spongebob....I did!

on the way back from oregon, i got TONS of seeds, when we went to my brothers wedding. it was so cool!! and clippings of plants!! my mom thought i was nuts!! rest area's are so cool too!! LOL
i don't have the copd, but i can't shut down that easily at night, i have tons of things to think about at night, then the garden things WOW that really takes over!! what i want to do!! LOL ~Medo

EG, I have RLS and it's extremely annoying. We don't smoke any more, I quit about ten years ago and the husband hasn't smoked since way back in the 70s, but he snores and makes all those....ahem....OTHER noises that old men make, and has to get up eleventy-zillion times a night to go to the bathroom. I, on the other hand, nap on and off all night and the only way I seemed to get any sleep was to have the TV going, turned really low. That kept him awake. We finally decided we sleep better alone and he moved to the spare bedroom. Of course, we're old ferts so sleep is more important to us than some other things might be *g*. Now we have the two puppies, who have decided they like sleeping with me at night and napping with Grandpa in the afternoon. They're small, but boy are they bed hogs! They want to cuddle up close, and they are so darned warm I'm sweating half the night.

I bought some more 2x6x8' lumber today, over Mr. Husband's dead body. He just doesn't get the love of gardening. Anyway, I'll be out constructing a couple of new beds as soon as it cools down tonight. I've decided to only build three, two for raspberries and one for asparagus. I have about ten 4x4x5' fence posts from the old fence, so I thought maybe I'd use those for the strawberry bed. Maybe build two beds about 4'x4' each instead of one 8-foot bed. I think I have enough scrap lumber to make them tiered, which would be nice. I wish I could make all the beds twice the depth, but it's getting too $$$

well, if someone is giving some wood away, or rebuilding, you could ask them, my neighbor rebuild his deck, so i asked him what he was doing with his old wood they tore off, so he said i could have it, and they kept it in good shape!! i was so happy!! AND he's keeping them in his shed, he's just awesome!! :') isn't it funny how them men say "over my dead body", and then we do it, and they still are alive!! LOL so hubs don't say that!! LOL ~Medo

I just sort of skimmed this "OT" thread...I have the attention span of a flea and the memory of an etch-a-sketch (I can't claim that one...a friend made it up) so I don't really have the patience to read everyone's post, but I get the gist...

EG - Sorry about your friend, and please give your stepson my thanks as well. I don't know what to think about the politics of war, but that has *nothing* to do with my gratitude for our troops.

Medo, we had the wood from an entire deck stacked in our garage for years. Lovely 2x6 redwood. I got so tired of that big pile taking up so much space (not to mention the spiders and such living in it) I raised holy cain and made Mr. H give most of it away. So now I wish I had it back, and that's why he said I'd have to buy new stuff over his dead body. What I paid $8 a board for years ago is now over $20 a board! Needless to say, this time I didn't buy redwood!

boy do i agree with you on that one L!!! i have a "friend" over there, i met on here, and he's just nice, i never met him of course, but i only talked to him once and he seems pretty nice. i tell ya, these people who have no use for them over there, drive me nuts, i had a good friend, but i sent a few cool emails, and when i put in my opinion, ohhhhhh man, she was very much for the war, and we became not friends anymore. i very much am for our troops, don't get me wrong, but am not for the war, and that's where we got into it, she'd rather it be a thing of fighting over there and not on our front, i'm the same way, but i just don't see that happening. not yet. i don't see them as that gutsy yet. and i tell ya, from a womans standpoint, they are getting smarter!! using the weman and children, if it was me, that's exactly what i'd do. well, not the kids. no way. but the female's. and the kids as bait. i told grant if it was me, exactly what i'd do, he was like, YOU ARE DEVIOUS!! we'd be screwed!!! i hope they don't ever use my thoughts!! LOL but i'm sure they have a mastermind that has the same thoughts!! i dislike war. i'd rather spread lots of seed bombs!! yep that's cool!! hmmmmm......now there;s a thought!! so many castor beans that you can't see over them!! LOL
