Whatever happened to truth in advertising?

Back in the 1960s I worked for a consumer products company for short time. I remember how strict they were about being 100% truthful and accurate in their advertising. It was the law--they couldn't exaggerate or misrepresent.

As I look at today's makeup ads in the magazines, I wonder if that law is still in effect. Mascara ads feature models with eyelashes that are obviously fake. Ads for anti-aging creams and makeup of all kinds show airbrushed faces with every pore, line, and wrinkle removed.

It's not a big deal, really. Almost everybody recognizes fake when they see it. But are the advertisers now allowed to do this?

Any thoughts on this?

Susan
