The guys who built it for me call it, "The Little Mansion." My friend calls it, "Barbie's Dream Tool Shed."

The trouble started when I wanted a garden shed to store our lawn mower. We have a nice house but NO outbuildings - at all! The mower is currently stored in the back yard, chained and padlocked to the city's trashcan. We have a wheelbarrow thrown over the mower's motor to keep it dry. Real high class looking affair. NOT.

So, I went to the big box hardware stores and I didn't like the look of those prefab sheds. I talked to a local carpenter who is quite the craftsman and told him what I wanted: A little house that is a good match to the big house. :) This guy is a dying breed and one of the last true artisans.

He's also a patient soul and listened carefully and studied my primitive drawings. Here's what he built for me. And yes, that is a slate roof, just like the big house. :) I've wanted to build a little house like this my whole life. I'm so thrilled to finally have this dream come true!

There is nothing plastic or vinyl on this house. It's all wood and natural materials. There are many layers of crown molding and trim and it is all a perfect match to the trim on our 1925-built Colonial Revival home.

The windows and doors are from architectural salvage. This first photo shows the detail of how the eaves and soffit match on the little house and the big house.

Thanks, Bellsmom! I wish I could do that myself. I have MBR pics, but they're espresso maple in a dark bathroom. They're also a neat combination of cabs. :) And everyone for the compliments! I'm really happy with how they're coming out. It might take me forever to paint or stain, but in the meanwhile everything's going in them instead of boxes piled against the wall. I actually find the skinny, 4-drawer drawers useless. That's why I originally ordered 3-drawer. My plan, someday, is to do what I did with the (extra) cabinets in my MBR. I took out two drawers and one set of drawer glides. I cut out the face frame and put in a single deep drawer. Like the big ones on the 3-drawer. Then, I attached the drawer fronts back onto the big drawer so it looks just like it started. Deeper drawer are much more functional than 2.5" deep drawers. Now I can put stuff actually in them. With 18" cabinets, the drawers can only be 15" deep. Need all the space I can!

Judy Jay Rhiannon is the name of a Celtic spirit and we got it from the Fleetwood mac song Rhiannon. It is pronounced Ree-an-non. DH and I were teachers at the time and that was one of the few names we could come up with that didn't bring up memories of other kids. Nicole, Peyton might look older but she is such a munchkin, she only weighs 25 pounds at 2 and a half. She is just a minature little munchkin. Diane, like all things - it does pass and this snowfall happens maybe every 20-30 years. Last year there was almost no snow. As for humour...now when I come inside for a coffee break, I'm so sweaty I can actually tear my top off and run around half naked to cool off and no one can see me! They can't even come to the door for the snow piled up - no flyers! no junk in the mailbox! Heaven. The only person who can see me is hubby, who's working and didn't even look up when I ran upstairs for a light top! Now that's what I call love. Nothing but love! He's blinded by it!

Fantastic! If I don't go with white cabs that is exactly the color scheme and look I want. Come to CA and do mine! Absolutely beautiful. I love everything and your pendants are so different. Unless I missed it up thread, can you please provide a style # or name and the source for those and your drum lighting fixture? I'd love to see how those pendants look turned on. So cool. Also regarding your layout, can you provide more info? Sounds like you knocked out some walls to make one room, but I'm having difficulty visualizing what was where. Can you elaborate and were the walls removed load bearing? I ask because we have a similar situation. Kitchen with a nook to one side that's all windows and both seperated from the family room by a half wall at the sink and "behind" the kitchen a seperate small dining room we never use. I'd love a more open floorplan and great room effect like yours, but we have lots of structural issues and still trying to decide if it's doable. So I'm just trying to visualize your before and after layout. That info would be helpful if you're willing to share. Thanks! Again, outstanding kitchen!!

If we had that, we'd be fighting over who gets it. I would want to make that into a "worm house" and Tom would want it to use as a practice room for his drums.

that's awesome...our friend did something like that... but it sits further back on her property...told her to add a path thru the "woods" (aka a few trees, lol) to the gingerbread house. lol...

Just beautiful. The detail is perfect. Have the lawn mower and wheelbarrow been put away? Love the deadbolt. I hope you decorate it for the holidays. I can see the Christmas lights now...

Thanks for the many positive comments. Yes, I love my little shed. :) It's 8x12 (tiny) but I think it's just right. We've already had several neighbors ask about it.

Ever since I was a kid, I've dreamt of having a little playhouse of my own. This "little mansion" went way over budget but I've assured my husband that when it's time to sell the house, that wee house in back will probably be a major selling point.

It even has an attic with a ladder going "upstairs" and operable windows. I like to sit up there and just meditate on life.

The deadbolt is an extra-security deadbolt and the little house is connected to the alarm system in our big house. We even had a house-warming party last month to celebrate the completion of our little house!!

Here's a picture of the little house my first husband and I built for my two oldest daughter (built from a kit) in the early 1980s. The girls loved it - and so did the neighborhood kids. And now I have one of my own!
