Lynda, usually when they are close to shore they become grounded and stay where they are until the melt, founder (flip over because they melt on the bottom and then become top-heavy) or sometimes the wind changes and blows them back out to sea. They will never bang into shore because they are so big on the bottom that they hit bottom before they reach the shore.

Casey, I hate to show my ignorance, too, but in East Texas we are ignorant about ice bergs. About how big is that under the water? I'd like to know, too, do they stay put or float? Is the difference in bergs and glaciers that glaciers are land bound? See? We know nothing here in East Texas!!

What beautiful pictures of them Casey. I love the blue hues against the stark white of the iceberg. Fascinating. I'd love to see one in person.

Vannie, as far as I know, 9/10ths of an iceberg is under water, so you can imagine this is pretty big under water and the water has to be really deep. They float around until they are grounded (stuck on the rocks on the bottom of the ocean). Icebergs are pieces of glaciers that have cracked off, they float down here from Greenland, this iceberg may have cracked off a glacier 3 or 4 years ago and of course it melts along the way, so they start out really big.

Now thats something you don't see everyday! What was the temperature when you took the picture. Do people ever row out there and climb around on them?

Thanks everyone. Yep, the water really is that blue. I didn't do much with these pics other than resize and sharpen. When I took these pics it was about 2ºC and windy....cold!!! But I have seen icebergs when it's much warmer, it can be 20ºC or more and there could still be icebergs off shore. Going near an iceberg would be dangerous but people still do it. They are unstable and you never know when one could flip or crack off. But I remember when I was small and visiting my parent's friends, they showed us a picture of their teenaged daughter lying on one in her bikini......she and her friends had gone out to one in a boat and climbed up on it. But like I said, they are unstable and that is a very dangerous thing to do. There are companies that harvest them and melt them down to make drinking water or use it to make Vodka. It's a bit thing to sell to tourists.

Casey, you take some fantastic pics, but I think your iceberg pics are the absolute BEST! It is just incredible to see these bergs floating around in bays by these homes/buildings!!

How shiny the one on the right is in the sunlight ... and the top of the one on the left quite gray.

And a great contrast with the water.

They're a lot like an ice cube in your glass - about 9/10ths under the surface. Slightly less so, as they're riding in salt water, which is slightly more dense. Where the ocean bottom is near the surface, they give it a good scraping as they pass, unless they ground.

And as they melt, they can roll over, or a huge chunk break off which could swamp or crush a boat if it were in the way. Or, if a big chunk drops off, the wave can swamp a small boat even a quarter of a mile away, I think.

Though, being silent, they provide a contrast to your average female ...

... but they have some things in common with many females ...

... beautiful ...

... unpredictable ...

... can be dangerous.
