Anyone wanna see pics of our new exterior paint color?

We've been in this house for a year and a half, slowly working our way through updated. It was built in 1980 and really embraced the decade in a bad way!!! Anyway, we've been wanting to paint since we moved in, and it finally got done. I'm not sure whose brilliant idea it was to paint it red with red trim (who does that?!), but this is what it looked like before. The white you see is because we had to replace a bunch of cedar siding before they painted, and the prep work is going on in the picture, so some pieces are sanded, but you get the idea.

Now, for the after, I thought this would be a dark grey/green. It turned out waaaay lighter than I expected, but I like it. It is definitely an improvement over the red on red, imo. {{!gwi}}{{!gwi}}

After all the help I received here, I wanted to update you on my exterior garage door/shutter color. We selected what appeared to be a medium-shade brown and it ended up looking alot darker, bolder, and redder than we wanted. But since the house faces south and I live in the midwest, I think it will fade a little. And if not, DH and I can always try to adjust the color in the future. Not what I hoped for, but we'll live with it for a while and see what happens. Again, thank you for all the advice and a big thank you to Squirrelheaven for the photoshop magic! try_hard

Thanks for all the suggestions so far --pbrisjar, Thank you for the link...I posted on that thread! There are some nice tiles featured, I just love the thick beveled look of the WZ tile. --aliceinwonderland, DH also thinks we should just wait on the backsplash. I just know how things usually go in our house...if it's not done NOW, sometimes it doesn't get done! Everytime we save up money for a certain project, something comes up...so I'd love to have it done and included in the price of the house. --redroze, I have no idea what our floors are. It breaks my heart because I "ordered" Brazilian Teak (or Cumaru) from a hardwood supplier over the internet...and what we recieved doesn't look anything like it should. We're building long-distance and our GC says that the boxes were labeld Red Cumaru...and they started installation even though the wood didn't match any of the pictures I'd emailed them with the variation of color in the wood. The floors are pretty...I just hope that whatever they are will hold up well for us over the years.

It is funny, but I did not change the garage door color. I used MS Paint and it did weird things to the roof too. Looking at it here, it seems like I made the top part brown.... I'd either do the garage door with the 2 light tones or keep it all white. I'd paint it last to see how it looks white first with the new house color. When I was working on the mock up, the lavender was either too strong or too light. I went with too light because the next step up was garish. Our lavender is sometimes very subtle, but when you see the nearby white, you realize it is not white too. It also looks different as the light changes throughout the day. I'll try to take an exterior pic of our house tomorrow. The landscaping needs a major trim, but the blooming trees out front are at their best. I work from my office Thurs-Sun and from home Mon-Wed (much fewer hours), so can do some work on them in the a.m. and take a neater photo ;) Although, it sounds like it is raining outside at the moment...

Cyn, I'm not surprised you missed the hydrangea -- that corner of the pic is pretty dark. I have two azaleas under the windows that are bright pink when they bloom, but they bloom such a short time, and they never seem to get enough water because of the house overhang. I planted some bulbs there too, and some big pale pink day lilies that seem to be thriving. I've long struggled in my mind to figure out what's the best thing to do with that bed next to the house because of the not getting much sun or rain problem. Can I move those well established azaleas without killing them? I think they'd like more sun too. The P.O. said he watered them heavily all winter long but I'm too lazy for that in the cold weather and I feel guilty about it all the time. The house is in the Seattle area, btw. The little tree in the center of the front planter bed is my pride and joy and was a big splurge. It's a 'Tinkerbelle Dwarf Lilac' on standard and I love it when it blooms. I've toyed with the idea of expanding the flower bed that's closer to the street, too, but I fear that would make it harder to access the middle of it for weeding. I really don't know much about yard design, but I do love flowers and have planted a lot of perennials and bulbs there, plus it has three blueberry bushes that bear -- yumm! The bed is pretty crowded now because I love the cottage garden look. But that also gives a great haven for slugs, which we have a lot of here. Eeeew. Another guilty point is I shouldn't have let the lawn get so brown, but all the neighbors do that and it's expensive to water and the plus side of not watering enough is you don't have to mow so much. LOL Ideas on the yard would be welcome from any of you!

Thanks everyone! The main color is Shady Willow by Behr, and the trim is Nesting Dove. I love Behr. We had never used it for exterior before, but I started using it on the interior of this house when we moved in, and it just covers so well. The last time I painted the exterior of a house, I used American Tradition and there's just no comparison. Behr is much better paint.

It's funny, because we have a stained glass side light that dh was not fond of, and actually wanted to take out when we first moved in. I liked that it was hand made, and so we kept it. Now that the house is painted, though, the side light looks a thousand times better. I'll add a picture of it when I get back from taking my son to preschool.

and that monochromatic scheme has been ascendant around here too -- from what I heard, people think it makes houses of our vintage (ours is 78) look more "modern". Yeah. No.

Here's a picture of the side light. The color is not very true - I took it this morning and had to use a flash - but you get the idea, anyhow.

Oh, and Aunt Jen? Those crazy palm trees? I have no idea how they have survived as long as they have. I assume they are original to the house, but this is NOT palm tree climate. Look at this picture taken Jan 08:{{!gwi}}
