We have one rabbit eared TV, the console MIL brought with her when she moved in (package deal). My wife got the box, probably Best Buy or Radio Shank. $20 plus the coupon.

We hooked it up right away. Rabbit ears or wire from the roof antenna into one plug of the converter box, the other plug out of the convert box gets wired to the TV. A new wire comes with the box. No trip to the roof is needed. Immediately you get extra versions of NBC CBS & ABC.

The box comes with a remote control (Great. ANOTHER one!). You get instructions on how to get your TV to respond to it.

If your TV doesn't have those screw on jacks you may need a couple of adapters. All in all a 10 minute job.

Looking at converter boxes was on my list of things "to do" today. It didn't get done though. :-)

Just wanted to let you know that you can also use the coupons on line. A lot of websites will take them. Most of the ones I've seen are between $40. and $60. The $40. ones are often out of stock.

Walmart has them. Paid $15 with coupon.

Got mine at Wal Mart a couple months ago, paid about $10 with coupon. DD got one also, she was visiting from St. Louis area and said she couldn't find one anywhere up there, they were all sold out. Last time I was in Wal Mart here didn't see any but didn't look that hard, at the time we got ours they were just in and on an end shelf.

We got oen at RAdio Shack. They said it was a "pass-through", that means it takes analog and digital so it can be hooked up now. We got it for FL, so haven't tried it out yet.

I have to get one also for my little portable TV that I can run on batteries in case of a storm. Glad to know I can get one at Walmart.

Think we ended up paying about $20 for each of the ones we bought. Can't get the darned things hooked up to save my life. Followed the instructions, but get NO reception with them. Think I'll just toss the TV's connected to cable, and forget the rest.

This lady reminds me of my grandma. She has Dish Network but is worried about getting these boxes just in case. She got some coupons from somewhere to buy them at a discount. This video may take a second to load but is worht it.

A few things to clear up:

minnie_tx, unless you get a converter that works on batteries, have a generator or a UPS or something, it won't work with your battery TV when the power goes out. Remember, the converter needs power too.

The extra stations will depend on the actual station, not the network. CBS, PBS, NBC, FOX, etc aren't giving you the extra channels. It's the local TV station that sets up the extra channels or not. In some areas, there may not be a secondary channel at all, although pretty much all have got a subchannel for HD broadcasts, but they're broadcasting the same thing.

Around here, and probably in many other areas, the digital channels are not being broadcast at full power. So just because you get poor or no reception now, doesn't mean you won't get better reception when they go to full power. Actually, I've noticed a lot of problems with the analog channels for a long time and recently found out they cut the power on the analog channels too while they're converting over. I had attributed my poor reception to a bad antenna and the proliferation of cell phones, taller buildings, and other interference but it's just from lowered power broadcasts.

The converters vary quite a bit. Not all have universal remotes, not all come with the cable, not all have a pass-through for analog and not all perform as well as others. Walmart has a $40 unit, so you can buy one for the price of sales tax with the coupon. Other places sell higher priced units, but they have more features. You have to decide which is best for you. BTW, not all converters are approved for the coupon.

You may need to adjust your rooftop antenna (when so equipped). Depends on the antenna and your location.

I've had mine for a few days now and initially was unimpressed but am becoming more pleased. I'll be happy when the power is increased because I don't think I'll need a new antenna. I get some snow on the picture now and use the combination of analog and digital for viewing different channels.

If you've ever connected a VCR (or DVD) machine, it's the same concept. Your antenna plugs into the converter and your converter plugs into the TV's antenna jack. Mine, and I'm sure all have very good and basic instructions. It's very simple to do.

I chose to buy locally in this instance rather than online. I felt more comfortable that if I wasn't happy with it, it'd be less hassle to return at a local reputable store than online. That was just my comfort lever for this instance. To do over, or again, I'd consider buying online, but many of the ones online don't have the same features. The other advantage was I made the decision to get it so I wanted it get it right away and not have to wait days for it to arrive.

All of our stores were out, so with my two coupons, Radio Shack ordered them for me. They were delivered free to me by Fed Ex.

Oh yes, my rabbit ears are old, so for the best digital reception, I will need to buy new ones. Right now, the signal comes and goes. There's info out there on the best ears to get also.

Minnie this is what it says at the official site:

"If a consumer requests only one coupon and it expires before it is used, then they can apply for a second coupon. Once two coupons have been issued to that household, the consumer will no longer be eligible to request any more coupons. Coupons expire 90 days after they are mailed."

Otherwise, check with friends/enemies/neighbors who have cable or satellite who wouldn't need them and ask them to order them for you. I didn't see anything that said they're non-transferrable.

From what I've seen and heard, not many people are ordering the coupons which would suggest there's not a big rush for them. Might pick up closer to changeover but who knows.
