Put the darn Cart back at the store or cart corral!

Why isn't some people can't either return their carts to the store or the cart corral? Yesterday I came out of WalMart and was walking to my car. As I was going down the lane, a woman finished loading her car and pushed the cart towards the corral. Not in the corral but towards it. It started drifting towards a new car, so I grabbed it so it wouldn't hit the car. Since this has happened to me twice (both times by someone who couldn't be bothered to properly put the cart away) I then walked it back to the person who had just shoved it in the direction of the corral. I put the cart behind her car and waited. She stuck her head out the window and said "Your cart is in my way." I replied "No IT'S YOUR cart which was going to hit that new car. If you want it moved I suggest you get out of your car and move it to the proper area instead of just shoving towards the corral." She muttered something under her breath, got out of the car, glared at me and proceeded to put it in the corral.

I probably was a bit foolish to have put it behind her car, but it just made me mad, especially since I had damage two times to my car by someone to lazy to either take it to the store or the cart corral.

Just had to vent this. What is it with people these days? Am I just a crabby old man? (Turned 60 this year).

Too "important" to be seen returning a cart

I would love to see a cart running into one of their cars...at full speed, too.

And, don't you love it when they leave the cart in the middle of the parking space?

I have ALWAYS return the cart to the corral or the store. The manager stood in shock one day when I came back in with my cart. My mom told him I always did that and he thanked me. I have my grandson returning stray carts in the parking lot. Have to be careful with that kid so he doesn't get run over doing a good deed!!

Yes, they are Shelties. And they are very huggable! Sarah-the-Princess-Dog on the left and Bandit-the-Ancient on the right. He's also known as Bandit-the-CatMagnet because any cat that's ever met him loves him. He is indifferent but they can't seem to get enough of him. They rub on him, curl up next to him when he sleeps and run up to him with tails held high. The kitten McQueen often walks next to him, looking up at him. Being part Siamese, McQueen talks the whole time - buzzing and burbling - he really looks and sounds like he's talking TO Bandit. He looks like the young punk in a 'buddy movie' tagging along beside the more laconic older guy. Bandit mostly just ignores him. To cats, he must smell like old sardines garnished with catnip.

Only time I saw the clothes basket type ones were at Menards selling them as clothes baskets. Thought about buying on for laundry. And I've never been to a Kohl's. A couple stores have the smaller cart option. I don't use them. Tried it once or twice but didn't like them though they'd work in a jam. I tend to lean on them a lot when I'm stiff and the smaller ones are a lower height. Fleet Farm has what look like conventional carts but they're designed differently. If you lean on the handle, it'll do a wheelie. Almost landed on my face the one day when I was really stiff and sore. And this place makes you sign a contract to use their electric carts and give them your ID. You must indemnify the store in the event that anything happens, including damage to the store, even to the point if someone else is responsible, you indemnify them. I laughed at them and said buh-bye. Didn't go there often before. Go there less often now. From the store's standpoint I understand the smaller cart - lower price and possibly lower frequency of repair. As a customer, I don't see any advantage. What is it that you love so much? I must be missing something. They block the aisles as effectively as a standard cart and work the same on the rule of thirds aisle blocking. I guess for some the lower reach into it would be helpful but that's about all I see so far anyway.

Attention, shoppers! If you take a half-gallon of fudge ripple ice cream from your supermarket's freezer case and then remember you are on a diet, don't leave it to melt on the rack where the tabloid magazines scream "Tom Cruise Marries Alien!" Likewise, in a department store, if you suddenly realize that a pink poncho will be passe in a month, don't fling it over a display of men's socks and walk away. Nor should a four-pack of 60-watt light bulbs be wedged between the boxes of fettuccine and ziti. For a few minutes, pretend I'm your mom -- your shopping mom: Were you raised in a barn? Will you never learn to pick up after yourselves? Stop rolling your eyes and look at me when I talk to you! Listen up: More and more of you are not putting things back where they belong when you go shopping. It happens at high-end and low-end and everything-in-between stores. It occurs in supermarkets, clothing stores, toy stores, stationers and any place where merchandise isn't too heavy to lift. It even goes on at the Gap, despite clerks -- only those with eyes in the backs of their heads are hired -- who attempt behavior modification in customers by pointedly refolding polo shirts milliseconds after they are mussed. It occurs even in bookstores, where, as in libraries, there are often tables or carts with posted pleas to place unwanted books on them so that people who know exactly where they should be shelved can do so. Still, you'll find a John Grisham tome next to "101 Ways to Cook Cauliflower." Especially during sales, the dressing rooms of department stores look like pigsties -- clothing in dumping grounds on the floor or falling off hangers and hooks -- because customers won't even return them to collection racks at the mouth of the dressing room so employees can restock them. Don't make the excuse that everybody does it. What if everybody jumped off a cliff? Would you? Experts who study what is called "shrink" -- the term for inventory loss due to shoplifting, employee theft or error, and damaged or "distressed" items -- estimate that less than 1 percent of all shrink is caused by shoppers who act as though they are royalty being shadowed by a maid. (A major grocery chain has about $500,000 worth of shrink a year, according to recent studies.) This number would be higher if alert shoppers and employees didn't see wrongs and right them, says Larry Miller, president of Trax Retail Solutions in Scottsdale, Ariz., and national director of the National Supermarket Research Group. Miller estimates that shoppers (acting as mothers the world over do) or store employees rescue about 60 percent of dumped grocery items. "Most people don't look at a pound of ground beef sitting on a grocery store shelf and ignore it. They take it back to the refrigerated meat section," Miller contends. "This has always been a problem, and it occurs at all stores no matter where they are," says Barry F. Scher, vice president of public relations for Royal Ahold NV's Giant Food LLC chain. He notes that the cost for supermarkets is especially high when the item involved requires refrigeration or freezing. Even though employees are instructed by managers at various times during the day to scout for misplaced items, perishables most often have to be thrown out because it is not known how long they've been sitting around. Scher says that Giant stores don't have staffers dedicated to performing the task called "shop backs" but that it takes employees away from other duties. "Stores also lose out because the stock isn't where someone can find it and sell it," says Jon Schreibfeder, president of Effective Inventory Management Inc. of Coppell, Tex. This means that, to be confident that they have enough of any product, managers must overstock items. Schreibfeder, whose company advises retailers on ways to control inventory, says that although the practice isn't nearly as large or troublesome as shoplifting or employee theft, "we talk about the [dumping] problem continually" with clients. Schreibfeder's prescription has been to have his clients schedule regular "stock straightening" for several times a day, especially when the store isn't busy. He also said a retail customer in Bermuda learned that nothing works as well as a departing ship in making people evacuate a store, leaving stick deodorant next to the asparagus. "A cruise ship would come in and the passengers would begin shopping. They'd find they were running out of time and would leave stock scattered everywhere," Schreibfeder recalls. He and his employees helped the store employees realize that they should scurry to round up misplaced products in between dockings. He also advised the owner to mark shelves that were most often victimized by shoppers and to have employees combing those prone areas. Schreibfeder says it's conceivable that, down the line, radio frequency identification (RFID) might be able to beam out an all-points bulletin (APB) to store managers, saying, in effect: "I'm over here -- and I'm defrosting!" to help in the roundup. Both Schreibfeder and Scher are inclined to be soft on consumers who dump products thither and yon. "People these days think they are too busy. Everybody's in a rush," Scher says. But Dorothea Johnson is unforgiving. Johnson, founder of the Protocol School of Washington and an etiquette teacher for 40 years, says we all must put things back because it is right and proper and is a tiny thing we can do to keep the world from chaos. She can think of no excuse for not returning merchandise to its shelf. Practicing this daily has the side effect of increasing self-esteem, she says. "Oh, you see, not putting things back is not being mindful of the next person who comes along. Although salespeople are trained to watch out for such things, I always put things back. I can then tell myself I did the right thing," says Johnson from her home near Portland, Maine. Even parents who spend the livelong day harping on children and spouses about tidying up can slip up now and then and ignore their inner Miss Manners. The other day, in a fit of fitness, someone left a pound of bacon next to a mound of tilapia packages after glancing about the store furtively to see if anyone was looking. But do as I say, not as I do. And don't run with a stick in your hand. You'll poke your eye out.

Visit stores (often the discount groceries) where you rent a cart for a quarter. Some people just aim their cart at those corrals and give it a push ... ... but not many! Which allows me to collect up to a half dozen, with the quarter intact in the front one, to push back to the store to collect the quarter. They tell me that the exercise is good for me. Some of our cart corrals accept carts at only one side, and sometimes I can drive through an empty spot by the cart corral where the carts go in, to park in the far slot, facing outward, which I prefer, and also which is beside the part where one can't push a cart in. I usually leave the cart at the cart stand by the door, and just grab my grocery bags (the day I can't hang on to 5-7 bags is the day I need to stop shopping anyway--LOL) and walk to my car. If I do have more groceries than that, I always return the cart to the corral.

Until recently. The grocery store near our new house has something I've never ever seen before. There's a wide strip between each 2 parking lanes where you can leave your cart. They have corrals, too, but there are kids out there constantly collecting the carts. So hey--when in Rome... I admit, I've been leaving my cart in the strip for it at that store. But I DO always grab one from there on my way in.

Most times I return the cart, occasionally I don't (shame on me) but I ALWAYS use a stray cart found in the lot upon entering a store (so, in a way, I sort of *do" return a cart, every time.) It is unfortunate to have so many stray carts throughout the lot, but I hope the same people who bring their carts to the coral would also consider (upon arrival at the store) to take one of those stray carts (maybe even next to your own parked car) to use, rather than walking past the strays to get a cart from the coral or inside the store. It just makes sense since the goal is to reduce the strays and save other cars from damage. Very often I see people walking past the strays only to get a cart from inside the store.

If we can be mindful of stray carts at the start, and end, of our shopping it would help reduce the damage to parked cars and free up some spaces at the same time.

Steve, I have two places I park at, when I grocery shop. It depends on the wind, if I park north, or south. I always park, so the majority of the turned loose carts will get blown away from my car, rather then in to my car.

I am like you. I hate it, when peeps don't put their carts away.

But, I also take carts, specially from women with children, when they just unloaded, and I am heading in to the store. I feel, if I can help them out, I will. I don't mind pushing a cart in to the store, on my way in.

I haven't done like you yet, but felt like it often. Not sure, if I have the guts to do so.

I always put my cart back, as a matter of fact I always try to get a parking space close to the cart corral so I don't have so far to go when I am done.
More than once I have come out of the store and had a cart right up against my car-hey my car might not be much, but I don't like it to be used for a shield for the new cars. I mean I have honestly thought do people see that my car is far from new and think she won't mind if we throw a cart up against it. I do mind.
You are not a crabby old man Steve-well maybe you are, but if you are then I am a crabby middle aged woman, because it ticks me off too.

Wow, no wonder cars have dings on them in parking lots, not from other cars but carts. Not good at all. How would she like that same cart to be pushed right at her car especially if it was brand new.

What is frustrating is you go, oh there is a parking spot and then you find a cart right there and you have to get out and move it to have the slot.

that is brave to actually bring back the cart and stand with the cart in back of the car. Nowadays, they are libel to just roar back, many don't even see you!

I think you handled it perfectly, Steve. That woman was an idiot and a lazy one at that.

We always return our cart, file away stray ones and bring one into the store if it's loose. I get ticked at peeps who don't but even more ticked at door-dingers slinging their car doors open and hitting mine. No matter where I park, someone finds me. It's starting to get ridiculous. My brother parked his Lexus waaaaaay out at Lowe's one day and someone creamed the whole front quarter panel on drivers side. Man, was he livid! No note, of course.

This is one of the things that makes me crazy too!! Also people walking right past carriages out in the lot and won't grab one and push into the store for their use.No, they get in the store and take another. just need to vent. thanks. june

secsteve, Thank you for confronting the culprit! This is my pet peeve. I once had my Brand New car dented and scratched by a wayward shopping cart! I was so upset by it. I am now known to spend 20 minutes in the parking lot rounding up stray carts that may damage cars. People are sooooooooo lazy!!! It drives me crazy. It's about respect. Respect for others property. Do unto others as you would have them do to you.

People in Iowa are good about putting their carts in the corrals. I like to take a cart from outside into the store with me. It is fun to see a person finish unloading their cart and tell them I will be happy to take it.

I remember seeing a lady do a similar thing, only she had a new car, too lazy to put the cart in the corral. So she simply pushed it away from her car and gave it a shove. Unfortunately she sent it on an uphill grade, so guess what happened next. The cart turned, gained speed and came back and hit her own car. Of course, she than went back into the store to report it, so I followed her in and related what I had witnessed. One mad lady.

That's just one of the things I love about Aldi's...If you want your 25 cents back, you'll put the cart back or give it to someone ready to "rent" a cart....One way to keep the cost down at the store...Do you know how much those darn carts cost????

I would like a better system to cart corrals. I like the idea of center places. Here we have so many handicap places that the cart holder is WAY down the aisle. I try to put the cart back but with the rain/snow I try to put it someplace it will NOT damage anyones car--We have one store here that the cart person is always picking up. I think he is a handicaped person, on the young side, but is so nice and is always working, rain, sun, snow etc. Very postive attitude. In fact people will walk their carts to him and he enjoys it.

I would have loved to have been with you. I would have told her off as well.....as long as you were there!

One of our local stores has it where you have to insert a quarter in order to free the cart. I don't know why more stores don't do that.
Another large store have locking wheels where the cart locks up when it gets to the end of the property to prevent theft, so it would be nice if they went further, with the coin.

People are just too damned lazy and arrogant anymore. These are the types where their cars don't have any dings in but they don't mind if they ding other people's cars. OR they drive beaters and don't give a shi about anything.

Here tho(ontario) we have to use a quarter to get a cart,so most return the carts to get that quarter back.

But that would have been fantastic if she had backed over her own cart...hahahahaha

Oh,and in my estimation my friend,60 is NOT old.

It's a pet peeve of mine too! I always return my cart, and if there is a stray nearby I take it in (mainly so it won't eventually hit my car!)

Thank you Moni! I'm one of those moms with kids who would love for someone to take my cart. I normally just park somewhere very close to the corral so I know I won't have to go far to return it.

I always try to park close to a corral so it's easy to put the cart there and if there's a stray cart about, grab it and take it on into the store. If no corral close, I'll take the cart back to the store, little exercise won't kill me.

I applaud you Steve for what you did and Silver, love your story how you went back in to explain what really happened. Probably didn't teach her a lesson in putting her cart back properly.

While I do like Aldi's method of the quarter, I keep thinking of the comedian that came on stage the one time saying Look what I just bought for only a quarter!!! And I see there's a quarter in there for me too so it's free! But it does help get carts returned.

I'm not sure what that woman's intention was by going in and talking to a manager about the cart hitting her car. Not going to get a settlement lady, ain't gonna happen. But I do applaud you for giving the other side of the story.

Many stores need more of the cart collection areas though. Several times when there's a cart in a parking spot I've just given it a nudge with the bumper. I usually am pretty good about returning carts and often take one just to hang on to since it's harder to get around, it's easier walking holding onto a cart.

My complaint though, it the ever narrowing width of parking stalls and people that park on the line. Last week I was at a drug store and was going through a couple things before I went in and some goofball pulls up next to me leaving about 10" between the vehicles. Parked over the line. Irritating.

They should design all parking lots like my grocery store - the parking lot is sloped. If you tried to leave your cart anywhere but in a corral, it would go careening towards the road! It takes some maneuvering to unload your cart without losing it. It drives me nuts but I can tell you that there are never any stray carts in that lot.

WOW! I didn't expect such a big response.

As I said, after having had my car hit twice by lazy people, I just had to speak up. It's not like it's a two mile walk to take the cart back or to the corral.

Just joshing about my being a crabby old man. I sure don't feel 60 and hope to be like my mom who was still going strong at 86. I'd take her shopping and she wear me out.
