Stopped Cold

With an impressive record of consecutive 20, Mother Nature finally put a halt to weekend fun at the beach. Not just cool, it's COLD. That's more weekends than in all of summer, and all local time. Could easily tack on 2 more to account for vacation, before starting here. Oh well, only 170 days til Spring. Below normal for too long affected the tomato crop. They like hot & sun, like me. Genealogy wonders, I must be the descendent of a tomato?
So started the day with bacon, egg, hash brown & toast. Then a gravy bread sandwich. Followed with a caramel apple. Easy chore comes first, laundry. Had a countertop full of ripening tomatoes, so got started cooking. Then picked another basketful. Quick boiled up veggies for soup (with tomatoes). Delicious tasting. Might as well go to Aldi and put 3 things in the bag. Walgreen has a good sale on candy. Picked up supplies for an outdoor project, on sale plus rebate. But not going out to work on it in this crappy weather. Plenty of choices for supper later, can decide during Happy Hour. The rest of the day will find some other foolish nonsense to engage in. October was supposed to be an off month, but so far, and all next week, is Doctors. Must be poke, prod, zap and test season. I should go see one in Arizona, where it's still an energizing 100.

I just picked the first batch of the last crop of Blue Lake green beans. I'll roast a turkey this afternoon and make a squash risotto to go with it.

WINDY and cool. This should calm the mosquito population.

Great thread idea, circuspeanut, and interesting thoughts all. On Mad Men, we watched several epis (with great anticipation) and never went back, we didn't care for the acting, the writing or the whole misogynistic tone, yech. Being baby boomer/gen x cusp types, I do remember some of the iconic design stuff (appliances, lighting), but thankfully I grew up in the boonies, so the whole suburb thing is lost on me. The razor blade disposal doesn't bother me at all, in fact, I prefer that to the plastic and gel encased blade pods you can buy (for a small forture!) and not recycle. And WRT town dumps, I am again showing my rube status, but our town has one, and most everyone uses it, there is no curbside pickup by our town or county, those who do have curbside contract with private companies. Finally, the initial question, I think it transitions into set design when, well, props are used extensively and pretend to be authentically used items. Consider the old fashioned mixer with mint green bowl on the counter (when the brand new Viking is in the cab, or worse yet, no actual mixer is ever used cuz no actual cooking is ever done), that feels inauthentic to me, but having a collection of old fashioned graters on the wall as a decorative feature feels OK, probably cuz they are decorative pure and simple and not trying to get anyone to think they really use the old Mixmaster. I appreciate retro design, but I would never want it to be "just like grannie's", and I don't think most folks would either. ITA that the appliances are a dead giveaway, but other factors can be the number of windows, lighting, ceiling height, etc. I am not a purist tho, and happily mix antiques with vintage and new stuff and don't worry about it, maybe purists need it to be seamless. Thanks! I noticed that the grille was greasy and when I removed it, the top filter obviously had been filtering. The fact that the holes on either side of the top filter had airflow and were completely open (there were no filters on them) made me think that something was wrong.

I sure do feel for you, Susan. Flowers are such a source of joy and to see them killed by that noxious weed must be very painful. I'm lately battling morning glory that must have been started by a bird dropping seed, as there are none around me. (I wrote about this earlier, so sorry for the repeat.) So far, it's in one bed that used to contain a spa and deck that we removed, and that now has three blueberry bushes and some green beans; if need be, I don't mind taking out the blueberries to get this weed gone! (The beans will be finished soon.) I am using a vinegar/salt/Dawn mixture that I read about, but I've had to reapply several times and I see they're green again. :( If applied when the weather is hot, they dry and fry immediately.....but in a week they're back again. I know I'm poisoning the soil and intend to replace the soil, if necessary. My patch is manageable so far, but we shall see if continuous sprayings will eradicate. Do you think your kids might be able to help you rent goats? Or would the weed spring back as soon as they leave? I'm sorry you're having to deal with this!

Last year (maybe the year before, time flies) gas had ran in to the oil. I had to replace the carburetor then and I put a valve on the fuel line, but of course I forgot to close it at the end of last season :-/ The oil looks fine, so I don't think there's gas in it this time. And where I filled up the gas tank yesterday, it still looks full today. So if it's leaking in to the motor, it's going slow. So today I took out the spark plug. I didn't have gas pour out or anything, and the flywheel still wouldn't move when I turned the key or by hand. I don't see any oil coming out of the exhaust, either. Am I right in understanding that, if it's hydrolocked, oil would be in the exhaust? Maybe I should use my air compressor to sort of blow in the spark plug hole and force liquid out? This is an irritating one, it was purring like a kitten in November! The only other thing I can think to do is remove the flywheel and see if something has gotten inside of the motor >:-(

You set a fantastic beach record! We had too many long extra-cold and wet spells here during summer and my tomatoes and other garden veggies suffered just as yours. We also had an unpredicted light frost in early September. Our last several days have been beautiful, but it's been raining since about 11pm last night. Currently 55F. Good day for cooking and indoor cleaning. :p

Love that you're descended from a tomato. :)

MAMA ---- send me a map, 94 would be great therapy.

JIM --- turkey is once a year, if that. Butter laden mashed taters & gravy too.Veggies smothered in cheese. If the price were right, I'd prefer a crispy brown roast Duck. Perfect city living, no mosquitoes in decades.

PARTY --- thanks, the last record was NINE! Got to keep up a reputation for the best tan on the beach, known far and wide. Perfect Happy Hour. Steak can wait, soup wins! Added some big wide noodles. Slurp.

It was a very nice 83 here today, but we have a cool front coming through and it will only be about 65 tomorrow. It's supposed to warm back up into the 80's again next week.We had a cooler than usual summer and I hope these warn days will extend as long as possible. I'm not a fan of cool weather and I detest cold weather. Luckily, our cold months here are very limited.

It was 101 in Death Valley today...95 at noonish when we started to leave. The morning was chilly, then turned beautiful and Scotty's Castle had a very nice breeze. No...just no people to speak of. Everything is gearing up to open Oct. 15, but very few tourists. One bus at the castle for the 10 am tour. A most interesting place. Ten people, maybe, in the visitor center/gift shop. Perfect time to visit, almost. Loving our RV park and thinking about staying here for a month this winter.
