San Francisco next week - any suggestions?

After reading the answers to Vannie's question about what to wear in Malibu next week - I'm wondering what to expect for San Francisco. I'll be there next week and I was expecting I'd need to bring a sweater and a light jacket. I think the weather is probably similar to Philly - yesterday was 65 and last night 47.

We'll be staying in the city and I haven't been there since college. I signed on for a day trip to Muir Woods and a sightseeing tour of the city. Is there anything special you'd recommend since I'll only have 3 more free days to enjoy the sights?

San Francisco is the most beautiful city. Do take a cardigan and/or sweatshirt for the evening/night time, it can get chilly there.

Take a good pair of walking shoes. Go to Fisherman's warf. Go have a seafood lunch in Sausalito (just across the bridge), at Spinnaker's. If you like art, go to the de Young museum. Walk across the bridge. Drive down Lombard Street, if you dare. Go to Ghiardelli's chocolate factory (free samples!) Chinatown! Ride a cable car!

You will enjoy. It is simply gorgeous.

I love San Fran. Along with the excellant suggestions above, be sure to start each morning stuffing your pockets with small bills and change. Then be sure to take your time walking around the city, enjoying the exceptional street performers. I've never seen anything anywhere, like the talent you can encounter unexpectedly on the streets of San Fran.

Also, make sure you'll have room in your luggage for some loaves of sourdough bread on the return trip (and maybe some See's Candy?).

The organic approach to killing fungus is to use ordinary corn meal at a rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Use it once and follow up again 3 weeks later. You can usually find corn meal at a feed store. Your nearest feed store is not close. Usually urban areas still have down town feed stores because your county sheriff will have a mounted posse. Click here to find your nearest feed store. Call first to see if they have ordinary corn meal. There is another corn meal product that gets confused with the regular stuff. What you do not want is corn gluten meal. Another possibility to find ordinary corn meal is to find a Hispanic grocery store. They sell corn flour but sometimes it is adulterated with baking soda and baking powder to make tortillas. Get the plain corn flour in 25-pound sacks. When you apply corn meal, do the entire yard. You don't know where the fungus starts and stops. Corn is an organic fertilizer so it certainly does no harm. Also you can over apply freely without fear of hurting anything. If you apply more than your soil can decompose quickly, you will get the sour aroma of decomposing protein. That will go away, but you want to minimize that situation. The smell is the smell of ammonia disappearing. That nitrogen does more good in the soil than in the air. Next time you apply you will have to apply a lot more to get that same smell, because the population of soil microbes that decompose it will be increased. There is one more thing I would not rule out. Your photo was right by some concrete. Concrete will heat up during the day and remain warm all night. That continual warmth will evaporate more moisture from that soil next to the concrete which requires more water in those areas. Keep an eye out for that.

Rose Gardens in and around San Francisco

Buford the Vintage garden hasn't been open for a long time. Right now there is house demolition and construction too. I haven't been to the gardens at Alcatraz, but it really seems like a fun excursion. I think you would enjoy Filoli, though I was unimpressed with the rose garden. The Morcum Garden and the Berkeley rose garden are nice. The SJHRG and the San Jose municipal rose garden are minutes away from each other. There is also the Santa Clara University fence(near both these). It's a (I think) mile of climbers and ramblers. There is a small rose garden at Mission Delores(SF). I think it would only be an hours drive to go to the Sacramento Historic Cemetery Garden. This would be the one not to miss. I know you'll have lots of fun.

The Roses at the San Francisco Rose Garden are not doing well. They are not selected for San Francisco, but to show off certain types of rose society roses. This is also because the SF rose garden gets about half shade due to a large grove of redwood trees near by, but also they get more sun over all then my area, due to the fog belt location. I donÂt have anything like a big tree blocking my sun. Maybe I could look and see if there was one rose that was doing better overall, then the others? I used to go there very often when I was walking my dogs in Golden Gate Park. I think they change the beds yearly, each rectangular bed has one variety, and about 12 plants per bed. They grow different ones each year. But, it would be a great idea, if they decided to devote a bed to fungal resistant roses. Cecile Brunner is nice, but it would take up too much space. Could it be kept small? Those can be huge. But, I looked up Royal Sunset, and it seems like a good possibility.

Thought I'd give you an update on our trip. The first day 5 of them did a wine tour and a friend and I looked for bookstores. We got the muni pass and rode cable cars and buses through upper SF and into the Mission district. We walked more miles than I have ever walked in my life, ate at some great restaurants, and took the BART back to the Ferry Building. We did the Hop on Hop off, and that was probably a good way to get acquainted with the city. We should have done that the first day. We went to Sausalito, saw the Golden Gate and Oakland Bridges, and the Seven Sisters. We spent every evening walking through Fisherman's Wharf. I bet the locals get tired of tourists but we found it fascinating to hear all the different languages spoken around us. We met a young man who had decided to drop out of his master's program and tour the world all by himself. He was from Israel and had climbed part of Mt. Everest, and been to Africa, Antarctica, Peru and several countries in South America, and had been across the northern US starting in New York. We also wondered why we didn't see any flies and mosquitoes there. All that seafood sitting out on tables in the open air and nothing but seagulls around. Very interesting. Wouldn't want to live there, but wouldn't mind going back every few years, especially if we rented a condo rather than stay in a hotel.

If you can get tickets, go see Beach Blanket Babylon. It's unique theater like nothing you'll ever see anywhere else. It's been playing for 35 years.

Cindy- I drove down Lombard St. when I was there - but then again I was only 21 and much braver. We will be doing lots of walking - that's my favorite activity when visiting a city. I'm really looking forward to this trip I just wish we could stay longer. You could easily spend much more time exploring.

Azzalea- sour dough is my DH's favorite bread. He always underpacks so he'll have lots of room in his suitcase.

I'll have to check for ticket availability for BBB - what a unique show. Thanks Linda - I've never heard of it before.

Be sure to visit the Ferry Building, too. There are street cars that run up and down the Embarcadero, all cars with their own history.

I'll add the Academy of Sciences, the Arboretum, Japanese Tea Garden and Conservatory of Flowers....all in GG Park.
The Exploratorium is near the GG Bridge at the Palace of Fine Arts. It's a hands-on type exploration of all sorts of interesting things....hard to describe, but a fascinating experience.
(And then, if you're very, very wealthy you can probably score a couple of tickets to a Giants/Phillies game...lol.)

If you like seafood, go to Waterfront Restaurant on the Embarcadero. It is my favorite. If the weather is warm enough, sit outside on their patio.
I also suggest, as others have, trying to get tickets in advance for Beach Blanket Babylon.
For an interesting and delicious lunch, try The Helmand at 250 Broadway, I think it is. They have a $9.99 buffet lunch. The food is Afgani and the restaurant is owned by the brother of Afghanistan President Karzai. He also has restaurants in Boston and Baltimore.
I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area most of my life and I just got back from vacation there.

Don't forget an Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista, which is between Giradelli Square and Fisherman's Wharf. They also do a great breakfast and lunch, and it's standing room only on weekend nights. It's where the Irish Coffee was first served in America.
